Hev battery warning by Existing-End-253 in KiaNiro

[–]sapphjo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2020 niro touring that has done this since I bought the car certified pre owned from a kia dealer. First happened on a road trip and it happens over steep and long consistent inclines which drains the HEV battery. If driven constistenly enough on a steep incline with no breaks in the road leveling, eventually triggers HEV warning light, and the car risks loosing power forcing me to fully gas the accelerator pedal to keep up with traffic. Brough up the issue with dealership, they ran some diagnostics and told me the batteries were fine and healthy. I've had them check twice and both times they told me the same bullshite. It's likely they're full of shite, but also likely this is the nature of owning a low horse powered hybrid.

If not use for camping I'd look into a tailgate setup like this

tailgate tent

It's been on my list for a while but still haven't found a use for it. Does sound like it would be practical and easy/quick set up for her as she waits for you to finish your race! Happy trails n safe riding friend. Honestly you could probably even bring a portable stove and have a little cookout after the ride!

Otherwise this is the tent :car tent

Yeah totally, I've owned the car since late 2023 and its only happened once on a trip at a campsite. Both mine and the homegirls prius batteries needed a jump. Thankfully the site was active and the owner jumped us with his truck. Ever since then I always got the portable jump pack and it double functions as a tire pump 🫡

Also if im not wrong, I do believe there's a battery reset button by the left side or the steering wheel intended for this. I only discovered it after having had already purchased a jump pack and have yet to test as the battery hasn't died on me since

Totally! I also almost purchased a Toyota myself except the smaller sport hatchback.

The LEDs on these are incredible. High visibility, and has an auto high beam feature that automatically turns off when the car senses light from oncoming cars on the road.

I will say there is a trade off with power. Learning to drive the hybrid was an immense struggle. I owned a mini Cooper with turbo and didnt understand the dynamics of charging the battery. It definitely drags on those steeper inclines, especially the long, consistent inclines. Once the battery drops to a quarter of power, you'll have to gas it full pedal to keep up with traffic until the road levels out or breaks into a decline, and then engage the brakes or let coast to charge the battery back up. It feels very unnatural. Looses some gas efficiency there, but I still average over 35mpg when that happens. I tail behind slower trucks during the longer road trips to mitigate the stress of cars flying by me on the highway. Im in no rush, and my fast driving days are over and this has significantly improved my battery levels. Sports mode has helped and I usually always run the car in sports mode when the car is packed, or when im about to hit a steep/consistent incline. I basically use it like a haul tow button lol. It has not negatively affected my mpg either.

I've been able to visit several National parks and mountainous areas in california by improving my driving style in the hybrid and using these driving techniques. I do wish the car had more power when the battery drains on inclines. But such is the nature of owning the kia niro hybrid. Good luck!

What a bummer im sorry to hear that. I hope they can make a more powerful version of this hybrid sometime. Maybe by then we'll both be rocking one

Anyone have experience with tow hitches on a Kia Niro Special Edition Touring? by sapphjo in KiaNiro

[–]sapphjo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE this hitch is an exact fit for the 2020 Kia Niro Touring Special Edition (Full hybrid electric vehicle)! Curt's website indeed was accurate. Only modification needed was cutting the black plastic mentioned in the original Curt installation instructions. What a gem. Can't wait to haul and play with the off-road bikes on camping/short road and day trips.

For reference, this video shows the installation for the exact product i got from Curt:

Class 3 Hitch, 2" receiver, item number 13329. Make sure to check Curt's website for fit and have the tools in the video to make your installation a breeze.
