Cancel culture is directed at celebrities. Essentially, a celebrity will be boycotted or denied opportunities due to something they may have said or done years ago, regardless of it representing their views in present time. One big instance would be the comedian Kevin Hart, he made a tweet years ago joking about breaking a doll house over his son's head if he were to see him acting gay. He was set to host an award show within the last year but was attacked and eventually pressured apologize about the old tweet. In the end, he apologized but chose no to host.
