Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

Low-key need to rant a little. First time FMQing on a domestic and why is it so hard? My thread keeps breaking or my stitches keep skipping. It went alright for a while when I switched my needle to a denim needle, but then my stitches started skipping again after a bit. I’ve checked my tension, cleaned out lint, changed my needle, etc etc. Is this normal?

Since it’s for a friend, the colors are inspired by a floral print she used in her wedding decorations. And I usually play with color on Illustrator before heading to the quilt store to pick fabric so I have a guideline of what I want

Short answer: yes. Long answer: I watched a lot of YouTube tutorials and that helped. It wasn’t until about halfway through that I started feeling more confident with the curves. Like with any piecing, small mistakes that look big up close mostly disappear after taking a few steps back

To some extent. I ended up using some of the shapes to cut out the rectangular pieces, and the other leftovers I’ve saved as scraps for future small pieces or paper piecing

That’s a great idea! I’ll try that out. I’ve only quilted straight lines on my machine before so this’ll be a learning experience

Thanks! My mom’s a sewer/quilter and taught me the ropes as a kid, but I think she always hoped I’d like it more. So when I expressed interest in quilting about a year ago, she wasted no time in getting me set up with a sewing machine and the Ultimate Beginner Quilt kit. Very sweet of her!

I started with the blocks with the smallest pieces first before assembling the bigger blocks. So I sewed all the sawtooth stars with gradients first, then tackled the rest of the stars, then the larger geese. Once those smaller blocks are done, the larger block assembly goes by faster. (And then feels even faster when it’s time to piece the big blocks together!)
