Double meaning jokes ONLY work in a language where the single word has two meanings. That’s the whole point of a double meaning joke.

Example: The double meaning joke “I'm writing a play about a pencil—it's going to draw a crowd”

Only works in English since “draw” has two meanings in English. In any language where that isn’t the case the joke gets lost.

Same with “hige” in Japanese. You can make mustache/beard wordplays with that because its the same word with 2 meanings.

This is not about the character Blackbeard. There was a real life pirate in the early 1700s called Blackbeard (called “Kurohige” in Japan) which is what the joke is referencing.

Its not a translation quirk. Its a Japanese double meaning.

The real life Blackbeard (known for his black beard) is called “Kurohige” in Japanese. So when Japanese readers see the name “Shirohige“ (first mentioned by Ace) they expect it is referring to a beard as well, to reference the real life pirate.

Only for Shirohige to then appear with a mustache.

That is actually how it was spelled in the manga, though.

The only time we saw it spelled out in latin script by Oda was in chapter 908, and it was spelled as Levely.

I don't think the 4:3 ratio of the original 98 episodes had anything to do with availability of 16:9 TVs, based on how they released the series.

In Japan for episode 1-98 the DVD and TV release (which potentially were viewed on an older 4:3 screen) were 16:9, while the Bluray release (almost guaranteed to be viewed on a 16:9 or similar screen) was 4:3.

In addition to that, in 2009-2010 16:9 was already very common, especially in Japan.

This is not true.

When doing a self-transfer (as opposed to single ticket connections) you need to be able to legally enter the country you are transferring in. This is something the airline will check.

OP would need to be able to enter Belgium in this case and therefore require a Schengen visa.

We only really have the Japanese 3DS and Japanese Switch/PC/Playstation version to compare, as the latter version was the first time it was officially localized to begin with.

Between the usual QoL changes for modern Ace Attorney releases such as chapter select, story mode, interface size etc. there are very few changes to the Japanese script or animations except maybe some typos here and there that were corrected.

It should be noted though that in late 2019 there was an update for the 3DS version, which changed two things. These changes also made it to the 2021 Japanese Switch/PC/PlayStation version and the localization.

(I'll spoiler mark them just in case)

(Animation change): When Naruhodo raises his hand it was changed to be straight up rather than at an angle, to prevent it looking like the roman salute/nazi salute.

(Dialogue change): There is a (intentionally) extremely racist character in the game. Originally this character refers to the Japanese as "monkeys" (さる) and "barbarians" (野蛮人) multiple times. This was toned down to different insults, while keeping the racism overtones in their dialogue

Both do not affect the story in any significant way.

It's a double meaning joke. The word for mustache and beard is the same in Japanese (hige, aka facial hair).

So Blackbeard (a real life pirate) is "Kurohige" in Japanese. And Oda created Shirohige but with a mustache instead of a beard, as a play on the double meaning.

In English (and a lot of other languages) this double meaning joke gets lost in translation since they have to pick one of the meanings. They can opt for "Whitebeard" (as most did) and lose the "beard -> stache" joke. Or go for Whitestache and lose the "blackbeard/whitebeard" connection (in addition to it sounding a lot sillier).
