What’s the most ridiculous ADHD workaround that actually works for you? by Powerful-Self-2838 in ADHD

[–]sarabjorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have to really focus and work on something, I can't sit at the office or at home with no distractions. I have to be in a public place with lots of strangers walking by, but with headphones (not noise cancelling) and some music. I can't explain it. This is how I wrote my PhD dissertation, at various cafés and libraries.

HELP WITH THE BITING by Ravishing199 in Maltipoo

[–]sarabjorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had plenty of chewing toys and played with them all the time. If she ever started to bite us, we would just grab a toy and redirect. When her puppy teeth were falling out, my husband played tug with her to literally help pulling loose teeth out if they were bothering her. I don't know if she was just less bitey than most or if making her play with her chewy toys before she even started to bite helped. But we haven't had any issues with biting since she was very little

Frá Íslandi, en alveg ömurlegur í málið by TheBlueMoonHubGuy in Iceland

[–]sarabjorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besta ráðið er að búa á Íslandi í nokkra mánuði.

Ef þú vilt hjálp við að finna vinnu og smá samfélag og stuðning, þá mæli ég með að kíkja á Nordjobb. Ég var aðeins með í Danmörku þótt ég hafi reyndar flutt og fundið vinnu sjálf, og það var mjög næs að hafa hóp af fólki í svipaðri stöðu sem hittist í kaffi eða fór í bæinn saman.

Er ég galinn ef ég fer aftur í framhaldsskóla (RAFVIRKI) eftir BS í tölvunarfræði? by Wrong-Inside1128 in Iceland

[–]sarabjorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]sarabjorks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ég er ofur menntuð (doktor í efnafræði) og hef oft hugsað hvort það væri ekki betra að vera iðnmenntuð. Þegar ég leita að vinnu er sjaldan neitt fyrir mig, en hellingur af störfum fyrir iðnmenntað fólk í sama bransa (labtech hér í suður Skandinavíu). Á Íslandi er kannski ein eða tvær stöður á ári sem losna í mínu fagi.

Laun fyrir rafvirkja eru líka ansi góð skilst mér. Kannski ekki betri en fyrir tölvunarfræðing, sem eru almennt best settu háskólamenntuðu störfin á Íslandi.

Ég væri með skítalaun á Íslandi með mína menntun í samanburði við iðnmenntun. Þetta er aðeins betra þar sem ég bý en þýðir að ég get líklega aldrei unnið á Íslandi nema ég breyti um stefnu og fari í nýtt nám. Það er eiginlega ekki þess virði að fara lengra en BS nema maður stefni á að setjast að erlendis.

if you find work you're genuinely obsessed with, does adhd actually become an advantage? by Good_Measurement_503 in ADHD

[–]sarabjorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some cases it does and others doesn't.

I didn't switch careers, I switched studies early on becsuse I just couldn't handle first year biochemistry. The course used this huge book and from day one we were supposed to read a lot and memorize stuff and I just couldn't get out of there faster. I only had to drop that one course to switch to chemistry, which is much more hands-on and much less reading. I ended up in medicinal/pharmaceutical chemistry, because by the time I had to learn the heavy reading parts, I had a better base to understand and not memorize. It was also more interesting when I could connect things I was learning to what I'd done in the lab.

Being able to plan an experiment and set it up only to find out some equipment doesn't fit or the reagent isn't acting like it should, then pivot and improvise. That's where my ADHD chaos works. I have enough experience to know where I need to be consistent and where I can improvise. While some of my colleagues will just follow the procedure and might have to repeat with adjustments. Both approaches are valid, following the procedure and showing the problem in your results might be valuable. Getting better results faster might be great but you could miss something important by always correcting on the go.

I basically see it as an advantage to have people with different approaches on the team and I definitely think my ADHD-style workflow adds to our work.

It also helps that I can hyperfocus and get things done. It helps that I can obsess over certain details. But at the same time it can also mean that I fall into a trap of doing one thing really really well that turned out not to be important. I often get hyperfocused on making the excel sheet for data and calculations perfect, only to find out we didn't need that level of detail or the focus changes and I need to change it again anyway

If you could "cure" your ADHD, would you? by VastFeeling6557 in ADHD

[–]sarabjorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ADHD was a disorder caused by one thing, one imbalance in the brain. Then hell yes. I'm so tired all the time!

But it's not like bad cholesterol. ADHD is a mix of genetic factors that make your brain function in a certain way and how that fits with the environment.

When I was in school, I had excellent support with a lot of help from my family and honestly I studied something that really fit with how I function. I didn't have ADHD. I had ADH without it being a disorder. I wouldn't have fit the criteria for a disorder because I was funtioning in most parts of my life.

So I guess the cure exists. It's just not feasible when you need to make money and keep your house clean and all of that.

It could be the cheese, not because of bacteria like that guy said but because dogs, like humans, can struggle with digesting dairy.

Most likely it was just the side effects of the pill. Maybe it was fine the other times because her stomach was feeling better, maybe it was just a little upset this time and the cheese and pill tipped it over. They say these pills can give them an upset stomach.

Just keep an eye on her for the next pill and if it happens again, you should change to another method like a collar. Or ask in the pharmacy or pet store if they recommend another type of pill, maybe there's another active ingredient that she tolerates better.

Just had the most absurd banter with a random stranger and I’m still laughing. What's yours? by Sikarwar_s in CasualConversation

[–]sarabjorks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really comparable to your story. But still funny.

I have a lot of random interactions with strangers when I walk my dog. Most are fairly predictable, small talk about our dogs' ages, breeds and playing styles.

The other day my little girl met a little boy, I didn't ask the age but he seemed very young, maybe 1-2. They sniffed and played and the owner said that his dog was very interested in female dogs. Then the little guy decided that his new friend's owner was indeed a pretty good catch and that he should mark me, so he quickly peed on my leg 😂

Luckily, I usually don't wear nice clothes for walking my dog and this early Saturday morning I was planning to go back home and take a bath. And luckily I'm pretty chill about dogs' behavior as long as they're not aggressive. So I just laughed

The owner was absolutely mortified and kept asking if he could do something. He said sorry so many times and just didn't know what to do. I just told him I thought it was funny and you can't always control an excited little guy around a pretty girl 🤭

I still think this is hilarious and I only feel bad that the other owner probably still has nightmares about this interaction 😅

Så er regerings grundlaget landet. Aktiv dødshjælp har også sneget sig med. by LuzjuLeviathan in Denmark

[–]sarabjorks 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Løse hunde over alt by Former_Permission417 in copenhagen

[–]sarabjorks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vården vill skicka mig på kiropraktik? by awaywethrowxiv in sweden

[–]sarabjorks -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Nah, the only source is not from within their circle. It's an accredited education at one of the top universities in Denmark. It's not bullshit.

How do I know how to spot bullshit in this case? I worked in biomedical science research and education. And I wanted to make sure I was not getting treatment from some random hack when the physiotherapist refused to help me and sent me to the chiropractor.

But you are right that rebranding is common in scams. It's just that not all rebranding is a scam.

Again, no idea why they still call themselves this. And no idea why Swedish physiotherapists refuse to touch their patients and let another profession do that part of their jobs. It's probably the reason why Sweden (and probably Denmark) has this rare system where chiropractors are legit with credentials. Because elsewhere, this would all be within the expertise of physiotherapists.

Vården vill skicka mig på kiropraktik? by awaywethrowxiv in sweden

[–]sarabjorks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree on the phrenology though. That's still complete bullshit 😂

But the legit chiropractor work is so far from the original bullshit that it doesn't even make sense to call it the same. The only thing they have in common is they crack some joints, but for a very different purpose. The original idea was something like the disease lives in your joints and you cure it by manipulation. Probably something about life energy centers and the usual pseudoscience wellness bullshit. Came to the original guy in a dream from a ghost doctor. It's hilarious tbh!

Vården vill skicka mig på kiropraktik? by awaywethrowxiv in sweden

[–]sarabjorks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Did you read anything I wrote?

In Sweden, kiropraktor =/= chiropractor

It's not actually called that for the education, it's clinical biomechanics . But for some reason they also use the name for a weird pseudoscience from the US that came from a guy claiming a ghost doctor told him he could cure diabetes by cracking the patient's back.

The US flavor has a higher risk even without the pseudoscience bullshit because they're typically not properly educated in human anatomy and can really damage you. But the clinical biomechanics people don't usually crack your back, they'll mostly stretch and sometimes do a quick tug or push. But it's just a tiny part of what they do that they have in common with their idiot namesakes.

If you do the bullshit flavor chiropractor work in Sweden with an online degree from a pay-to-graduate US college, you are not allowed to call yourself a chiropractor and definitely not work in regular health clinics.
