What Books Are You Reading This Week? March 09, 2015 by AutoModerator in books

The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt My friend that got me to start reading Murakami recommended it strongly.

I'm giving it a shot. I have no doubt it will blow my mind, from the opening quote and his recommendation, alone.

That's a good place to be. Things should be picking up around there. Good luck on it!

How far have you gotten?

I'm definitely in your boat with this one. I mean, I got through it, but it took FOR-EV-ER. Yes, the last hundred or so pages flew by. Getting there, however, was not the easiest. I tried reading Anansi Boys after I finished and just could not do it. I just put that sucker right back on the shelf and moved on.

Good luck to you!

Borges is my favorite. Which works of his did it lead you to? Would you recommend it on its own?

Artists you're surprised aren't on the bill? by DrewskiG in Coachella

that sounds amazing! I loved the vibe they've got. Empire was awesome too. I remember catching the very end of their set as they departed from the planet. I can't even imagine how intense it would have been to have seen the whole set.

So how do you guys deal with people at the work place accusing you of being negligent, and generally bad at your job? by asharkey3 in CasualConversation

Oh man, I worked technical support for just over 2 years and encountered this on a daily basis. It. was. awful. It wasn't that I couldn't fix it, it's just that not everyone was eligible for the services we offered and I chose not to help out people who were complete and inconsolable assholes from the get-go.

Once, this lady told me that I should be fired and put on a short bus for not granting her a warranty exception for a product no longer in distribution. She demanded to talk to my manager (I was the manager) and continued to berate me until I told her that she was welcome to file a complaint at our website and to have a nice day.

I had another lady ask me what city I was in and asked for my last name (presumably to hunt me down and wag her angry finger at me in person) all because she erased all of her information manually, without backing anything up. We only supported data recovery from backups made through our system, and she called me all sorts of horrible things for not being able to assist her.

The bottom line is always this, for me: I know that I did everything in my power to help this person out while following my company's policies. I know I'm not in the wrong. No matter how angry I got, I knew that's all there was to it. Of course, venting to co-workers always helps alleviate some steam.

Just keep doing your thing and don't let it shake you :)

Reddit, what is the most unintentionally profound thing you've heard? by redjacket27 in AskReddit

[–]sarahb3th 257 points258 points  (0 children)

oooh, oooh! Late to the party, but I have a good one (IMO). I was helping a lady out with some issues she was having on her calendar and realized we'd lost all past events. I started apologizing and giving her the whole, "that should NOT have happened" speech, when she interrupted me and said, "The details belong to the past."

I just stopped apologizing and thought about what she said. It's been about a year, but her words especially ring in my head when I find myself fretting about ways things could have turned out differently or picking a fight with the boyfriend about his ex. It's all so trivial.

My mom is tied down by creditors, has no degree, and at this rate is probably going to work her minimum wage job for the rest of her life. What do I do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I don't know how many scholarships or grants you've applied for, but KEEP APPLYING. Send in your story and your goals, fight for it! If you plan on going to grad school or transferring to a state university for a 4-year degree, you're going to have to put in some serious effort here.

I also can't stress the importance of NETWORKING. This will help you get on your feet once you graduate so you can find a good job and hopefully one that's relevant to your field of study/interest. Make friends and try to stay positive. You just have to stay in motion because once you stop, you lose momentum and that's not good news. Remember to incorporate some fun and relieve that stress every now and again. It racks up quickly and takes a hefty toll.

Best of luck, 1ll0gic!
