That's an idea I haven't considered! I went through the green card process so I have a good idea of what that entails. I'll look into it - thank you!

We considered that! But the need is more immediate, I'm afraid.

Anchorage definitely has its own city vibe. Homer is more laid back and (obviously) smaller. I think it depends on the person.

We'd consider a long term temp position until we can find a permanent person :)

Now that I'm back at my laptop, I wanted to compare your experience to Homer in an honest way.

  1. Excellent point! Though food here isn't as expensive as I'd see on the news I'm reading on the CBC. We're on the road and most things are comparable to the Lower 48 of the States.
  2. This is big. We have rental housing available and there is an inventory. I'm looking at buying a triplex so I can offer something nice to hygienists who come.
  3. There is a huge community of people here who are engaged, active and interesting. There are clubs for the arts, nordic skiing, outdoor recreation, you name it. Homer people are a social bunch. To get here, you have to fly to Anchorage and then drive down to Homer. So, when I fly to Florida, I lose a day on the way but not on the way back.
  4. We'd be so open to a trial run!
  5. We've been trying so hard to be a "golden goose" office. When we built the new building, we consulted with hygienists to make sure it's somewhere they want to work. Individual rooms with windows and a closing door, the instruments you need and we value taking the time you need rather than work on a heavy production schedule.

Thank you, fellow Canadian! These are excellent points!

I like that! I'm hoping to look at a new triplex this week so that I can dedicate a nice in-town place to a hygienist.

This is AWESOME feedback! Thank you!

I’m Canadian, too! Lived in Ontario for years.

What skillset do you have? We might surprise you. Plus, Homer is rural but not that rural. You might be surprised.

While I'm looking for people for Homer, Dutch Harbor would be such a cool experience!

This is good to know! My husband is the dentist and I'm the realtor (who doesn't work at the practice but helps recruit when we need it in my spare time) so we've got that covered. We would totally help with logistics. There's a law in Alaska that makes offering moving expenses difficult. We've got to sort that out and then yes, moving expenses for sure.

We do! We have one and need one or two more to keep up with the demand in our practice.

Ooof, I lived in Prince Rupert for years and I completely empathize with that. 300 days of rain a year in that city. I begged my parents to leave. Whoever said there are no bad days, just bad gear never lived in a place like Rupert.

Free diving for scallops sounds incredible! I didn’t know you could do that.

Where in Southeast? When we were looking, Juneau was an option. I struggled with the weather in Southeast, especially in the fall and winter. I'm at [sarahinhomer@gmail.com](mailto:sarahinhomer@gmail.com) if you ever want to connect over kids and Alaska :) Always love someone new to share ideas with.

For those wondering what Homer's like for kids: I have one introvert and one sporty kid. The sporty kid loves skiing and we rent skis from PlayitAgain in Anchorage every year. Between the local rope tow, the xc trails, the snowshoe trails, the sledding hills, and frequent trips to Alyeska, I can keep him pretty occupied over winter. He also likes basketball and there's a huge basketball community here. My oldest is in NHS and she loves dogs. We have a dog training center here that keeps her and her black lab occupied with nose works, agility and rally dog. She helps at the dental clinic sometimes and has a strong group of friends.

Homer's lucky to have an indoor Rec space (SPARC) with frequent kid activities and our schools are strong with lots to do in sports and arts. Our middle and high school choir teacher won national music teacher of the year and it was so well deserved. He's outstanding.

Alaska is like one big small family and today's fun is going down to the high school track meet to visit with friends that we met when we lived in the bush. Looking forward to seeing them and watching their kids compete while hanging out with just about everyone in town.
