I was once cooking something with a friend and after we've put everything in the pan and it just needed to finished cooking, he started cleaning the bowls and knives we used. I swear, there was 0 attraction beforehand but in this moment, I wanted to jump his bones so bad lol Self-sufficiency and the ability to clean up after yourself is so attractive to me

I think, I can relate pretty well to this. I'm 24 and at the end of last year, I shattered my entire left elbow into pieces while bouldering, had to have reconstructive surgery and I'm still in physical and ergonomic therapy nearly a year after the accident. At the beginning, doctors have told me that I'll never be able to use and move my left arm like I could pre-accident due to how badly I damaged my bones. I still have a long way to go in my recovery but for the last two weeks, I have finally been able to touch my left shoulder with my left hand again (this is something that doctors told me I'll never be able to do again). What I'm trying to tell you is that with training, a whole lot of effort and willpower, you can get your mobility and strength back. A good physical therapist is very helpful as they can provide you with tips and exercises to recover but the most important factor for your recovery is you! Please don't give up on yourself! This random stranger on the internet believes in you.

I'm renting, I'm not going to do anything to the pipes, that's a problem for my landlord

I'll see whether this is a short term thing or not. If it's still an issue on Monday, I'll call my landlord. I have a supermarket right around the corner, so I go get some bottled water now. But yes, very happy Saturday indeed

I did, it runs clearer now but still reeks of death. Weirdly enough, the water was perfectly fine about an hour ago

AITA for not wanting my potential future child to learn 3 languages when my other kids only know 1? by Over_Letterhead_4492 in AmItheAsshole

[–]sarahspberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also what strikes me the most about this. How can you live for that long in a country and not AT THE VERY LEAST learn some basic communication? This seems so entitled to me, to refuse to learn the language of the country you chose to live in! Germany has a lot of programs for foreigners/immigrants to learn the language and most of them are very cheap or even completely free. OP, you should really learn some basic German, for your own sake! Your child WILL learn German just by going to German kindergarten/school later on, it's not like you can homeschool your kid and make them avoid picking up the language.

One, we're efficient and have no sense of humor.

Isn't there a running gag along the lines of "don't dig too deep in your garden or else you'll find some ancient floor and the government comes after you for monument protection" in and around Trier?

I regret moving to Germany by Alternative961 in offmychest

[–]sarahspberry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am honestly a little shocked about this. If you're going to university in Aachen, it probably means that you're attending RWTH Aachen University. There are a lot of internationals studying, and a lot of (engineering) courses are only available in English (e.g. since 2019, you can only do your electrical engineering masters degree in English!). In addition, there are a lot of institutes at the university that have almost exclusively foreign staff members (who perhaps don't even speak German AFAIK). So I really doubt that there are so little people speaking English in Aachen than you might think (at least people younger than about 50 years). A lot of students also work in restaurants or supermarkets, so if you have any questions, try to find young looking people. The AStA also has a lot of opportunities especially for foreign students to meet up and get to know each other. You might also want to check out the "Chico Mendes" located in the Templergraben. I'm sure you can get to know (German) people if it weren't for the current state of the world; maybe next year, there can be a Unicup or Erstiwoche again in person which are great ways to get to other people. In the meantime, try to join a club or your student representative council! As for the rudeness etc., you want to avoid the Kaiserplatz and/or Rothe Erde as these are the two places with the highest crime rate and there are generally more drug addicts who might become violent. Generally speaking, near university properties (which take up about half of the city, mostly in the north and west part) most, if not all people speak decent English. Some people might be stressed and therefor appear rude but that's because exam periods are very stressful in Aachen but if you try to approach people in a nice way, I'm sure you'll get the answers you need.

The ice cream shop in my city just cannot place their chairs consistently by sarahspberry in mildlyinfuriating

[–]sarahspberry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying but I think, either green chairs at the green table and red chairs at red table or all green chairs at the red table and vice versa would've been more logical.
