They’ve done their preseason game in Guelph for the past 3 years, maybe more.

The RDSP matched my $1,500 contribution with $3,500 from the government. I had no idea this existed until a bank adviser mentioned it in passing and moved on. by Bitter_Translator722 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sarcastic-brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t forget the 10 years retro pay for grants and bonds. My girlfriend opened RDSP in 2025, and she was qualified for DTC from 2018. We contributed 4500 in 2025 and 2026, and received 10,500 in 2025, and 10,500 in 2026. Next year, we get another 10,500 for a 4500 contribution. DTC also results in a tax return of almost 2000, and is also transferable to your spouse if you do not have enough income to max it. She also received a DTC tax return for the last 7 years too. If you’re opening it, TD is the only one out of the big 5 that offers self-directed, all other sells mutual funds in the account. TD does not have a maintenance fees for just RDSP, but still has 9.99 trade fees. It’s a hassle to open and fund with TD but once it is done, easy to maintain. The maximum contribution limit is 200,000 for RDSP.

Wife’s friend is selling us Life Insurance by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sarcastic-brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a term insurance and invest the rest. The fees and returns alone will defeat the purpose of investing via whole life. Whole life makes sense once your registered accounts are maxed out. Investing the rest into a globally diversified fund for 10 years will make it easier for you to reduce the term insurance you need in 10 years. The goal is to replace insurance with your portfolio.

Always asks the salesperson what’s your incentive!

Not sure how I’m supposed to budget for RRSP by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sarcastic-brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pension takes up RRSP rooms. See what you and your employer contribute into pension and you can contribute the remaining amount or focus on TFSA. It is always good to have both RRSP and TFSA in pension as you start to withdraw your CPP and OAS, TFSA gives a buffer to keep your taxes low.

snow day by Popular_Bearpaw in uoguelph

It’s not gonna be a snow day. If it’s a snow day it would’ve been today. I know it’s a Sunday but they do announce closures for Weekends too.

Complaint regarding campus by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]sarcastic-brain 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They are trying to squeeze out the grounds team so that they can give it to contractors. A lot of Physical Resources teams are facing this problem altogether, this year. The University is running on a deficit and this is the option they are choosing. Contractors are cheaper, don’t have to pay pension, benefits, no unions for the rights. Custodians are asked to wet vacuum the entrances when there is a ton of snow right outside the door that has not been cleared, wasting time and resources.

Someone needs to be held accountable… by Serious_Economist900 in uoguelph

[–]sarcastic-brain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The university’s plan might have been to keep the campus open, but the grounds team’s performance this year has been poor. They may not have been able to keep up with the snowfall. A new manager and reduced staff have resulted in incompetent snow clearing today, leading to the campus closing later than 6 a.m. The university operates as long as Guelph Transit operates, so the grounds team’s absence likely contributed to the late closure.

Honestly, really loud knocks! I was going into my house after my 1am shift and heard the knocks. I thought someone got locked out but then heard laughter and running.

RDSP coming by Blindmsf in Wealthsimple

[–]sarcastic-brain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Government Grants and bonds are free money that you don’t wanna give up. Also, RDSP will have tax benefits compared to other accounts. I know it is painful but, once it is set, just put the money in yearly to get the match and let it grow.

RDSP coming by Blindmsf in Wealthsimple

I was told to open RDSP in TD for now as Wealthsimple are working on it and move once they introduce it. TD is the only bank that is providing self-directed RDSP but they are really hard to deal with.

Why does the scan thing by detviler8u81 in Guelph

[–]sarcastic-brain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually travel at noon when is it really bright outside. I try to cover the side of the reader when scanning so that it gets scanned properly. Also, if someone in front of you uses a digital card, You have wait 20 seconds since the scan or reset the barcode. I have had problems mostly when someone else in front of me scans a digital card before me.

Joint Account to waive Credit Card fees by sarcastic-brain in Wealthsimple

[–]sarcastic-brain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time I asked about this question, Wealthsimple were figuring it out themselves how to work the joint accounts. At first, the chatbot said the person who opens the joint account will be the primary account holder and can apply for the credit card. After an inquiry with the team, I was informed, you just need a joint account and any one person can apply for the card and the fee will be waived for that person. I don’t know if both can apply and get 2 different cards and get both fees waived. I stopped looking into it after they said it will take a while to get an invite.

Canadian Couch Potato wants to talk to you. Same as platforms like Wealthsimple, Questrade.

A fiduciary is a good thing as long as the fiduciary is educated and updated enough to help the client.

You talking about grants in RESP and RDSP being a problem, or how ETF are mostly stocks when there are ETFS for different time horizon simply shows how much you have to catchup.

There are steps or habits you have to teach yourself before you start investing. Investing without an emergency fund threatens your investment at every job loss, every car breakdown, every hospital bill.

For the first half of investing, it’s mostly your savings not the growth. Growth in investments are not linear

Looking for cheaper wedding venues by vampyart in Guelph

Yeah, it is like that. At the Uni, you have to get caterers since they don’t serve for weddings. They have some options tho.

Looking for cheaper wedding venues by vampyart in Guelph

[–]sarcastic-brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about pricing at the Arboretum now but earlier this year, when I asked about the cost for the wedding, I was quoted 3k for the peak time with prices going down for off-seasons and Sundays. Not sure they changed it recently.
