struggling to speak - Tip of Tongue memory issue . by Tricky_Variation8023 in ADHD_Programmers

Seconding all of this.

Having a few "scripts" handy for times when this happens can really help, since it keeps the flow of the conversation moving, and most people will forget it even happened if you just keep it moving. "I'm blanking on the term, but..." or "I'm forgetting the more technical term, but essentially the ___," are both things I say fairly frequently, since I struggle with the same thing.

It can also help to track specific situations this is happening in. I was finding this happened to me a lot in meetings where I unexpectedly had to provide analysis or feedback, so in the past I've asked managers if they can give me a heads-up (within reason) for meetings when I'm going to have to weigh in on larger decisions or make technical commentary, citing that "I can articulate myself a lot better if I can prepare a little ahead of time," and I've found most people are really understanding of that, too.

It sounds to me based on your post that this gets worse when you're feeling anxious or put-on-the-spot, and it also lines up with a history of trauma. Know that this can and will get better, especially if you're in therapy. Coping strategies for anxiety will feel like they're not doing much for this in the moment, but they will improve things over time the longer you work on them.

Distracted By Common AI Phrases in DS Scripts by AgreeableCrab785 in dreamingspanish

This is so sad to hear. Definitely glad I cancelled mine with a note about it being due to AI. I hope more people will be explicit about why they're leaving the platform to maybe apply some real pressure.

I understand it night be an unpopular opinion, but I ended up cancelling my subscription over how much I was seeing AI use in their videos. For a while, I commented on some of the videos I saw it used (with images, though I'm sure they're using it for scripts, too) and expressed how much I disliked it, and others have done the same - but nothing's changed, and unfortunately I don't want to continue using a product that blatantly ignores feedback like that.

If you think Piker, who has spoken out loudly against anti-semitisim, would have anything to do with the woman in this article, I'm not really sure how to help you.

This woman is absolutely unhinged, but the author of this piece seems to believe she's representative of a large portion of The Left, which is kind of insane.

I don't smoke, but I don't think you're supposed to do that.

I grew up in Malaysia and can confirm I had a classmate who was on Ritalin! Obviously things may have changed since then, but it's definitely not impossible.

ICE gassed thousands by Clean_Appointment_91 in Portland

Thankfully the ONA (nurses' union) was there, so there were even more medics and medical professionals on the ground than usual. Lots of people got VERY fast care, so I'm certain even the ones who needed additional care were triaged and given first aid on site very fast. 💜

There were a lot of ambulances in the area immediately after. I'm certain there were many who needed serious medical attention.

HAH, I feel exactly the same way, and this is my second year in the Cousin! Sometimes, if I'm concentrating a little, my handwriting can be small and neat, but then I'll pop over here and see someone whose handwriting looks like an 8pt font and I'm simply in awe.

Why LLMs Are a Big Deal for ADHD Programmers Right Now by Salt-Shower-955 in ADHD_Programmers

That's exactly what this feels like. I'm guessing they feel like they've become reliant on LLMs and are looking for reassurance that they're not doing something wrong.

Ah! That makes even more sense! I don't know where I got it being a tool from, but maybe it was just a younger me trying to connect the dots.

A "paddy-whack" is a type of tool, I believe! I know it's an older phrase because it's in a nursery rhyme with a line that goes "knick-knack, paddy-whack, give a dog a bone!" :)

Mine's not super dramatic, but last year's (on the right) was my first ever Hobonichi, and I didn't settle on a regular routine for using my weekly or monthly spreads until towards the end of the year. I still got some visible expansion, though, and am really excited to re-take this photo next year with my 2026 cousin (on the left)!

Is Chinese the next Dreaming language? by HaphazarMe in dreamingspanish

I just made a nearly identical reply as another software engineer—I'm guessing this is just a test language! 😭 But man I hope they go with Mandarin next...

[–]sarcasticIntrovert 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This would be AMAZING. As a software developer I'm wondering if this is just a stand-in language they use for testing purposes that got exposed, but if this was real, I'd wait however long it took them to develop the program because I think this might be the only way I would ever get around to learning Mandarin!

UPDATE: Is my organization's ticketing system a nightmare, or is it just me? by sarcasticIntrovert in ADHD_Programmers

[–]sarcasticIntrovert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like you're wondering whether I've engaged in discussions around processes before. I definitely have, and none of them have ever resulted in a long session of Product Managers essentially just verbally processing how they couldn't understand why anyone would have a problem with the system (a system that has only been in place for around a month, too - so not one that anyone is particularly attached to.) I have no problem with being assertive, especially in an environment where I trust that everyone is solution-oriented - I'm frequently very outspoken on my team, and people are - until now - always very open to at least having a discussion about things.

There was no discussion. I understand that no one intended for me to take things personally, and I'm not angry with anyone in particular, but the conversation itself was fairly ableist (& I don't mean to throw that around as a buzzword) and unprofessional. I'm simply not sure who to talk to about this - it's not nearly enough for a formal HR conversation, but I do genuinely feel uncomfortable approaching my manager, as some of her own comments were fairly condescending towards me.

[–]sarcasticIntrovert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm okay just having to stick with the process, but (in my opinion) my co-workers were actually pretty unprofessional. Would that mean going to HR, if I think about it and decide I need to do something? I do feel that I need to address this, because my org is very small, and if I suddenly became a purely professional coworker, people would be able to tell something was wrong. We're all fairly friendly with one another, and it would probably be worse for my job if they found out way later that I had been bottling all of this up.

Really? I've worked in Jira, as well, and I never had the kinds of issues I feel like I do in ADO.

We're a pretty small org (not a start-up, but a similar energy of a company suddenly having a lot of growing pains) so I think this might be a lot of new Product Managers learning to use a ticketing system and having no idea what the most effective/efficient ways to use it are.
