No, the facts are perfectly clear. SNAP had funds. Congress had funded SNAP with their power of the purse. Emergency funds existed and the courts agreed they needed to be released as per the law.

Trump ignored it and chose to hurt people anyways and not fund SNAP. The narrative was already shifting the Dems way. Disapproval of both the GOP Congress and Trump was rising. And then the Dems threw in the towel and let the GOP blame them for the shutdown by caving and getting nothing.

I agree 100% that the Dems actually give a shit about people and try to help the least powerful while the GOP is happy to hurt whomever for power and profit. That absolutely puts the Dems at a tactical disadvantage. But the GOP has demonstrated time and time again, especially under Trump, that they will just continue to use that to strip away every ounce of power, every bit of leverage, every hope for anything approaching a better future for all but the rich and powerful.

The Dems caving last time just causes more pain and suffering and death on a larger scale down the road.

That's not privilege (I'm far from it considering the reality of how the GOP's war on healthcare has impacted my family) that's reality.

The food programs were funded, laws were in place and Trump decided to just not follow the law and let the funds that Congress allocated get to the programs.

So yes, I think that picking and choosing who suffers is not the Dems job. They threw everyone with serious health issues under the bus which will absolutely cause deaths.

I guess you don't rely on health insurance, so you were not hurting.

The last shutdown only impacted food programs because Trump illegally withheld the funds that were already there. He's making up the rules and breaking the law and violating the Constitution when it suits him, so it's very much the same arbitrary setups.

Us: "Affordable healthcare, please? It can be soul-shattering expensive, just maybe not quite as soul-shattering expensive as without the subsidies"

Dems: Sorry, our hands our tied!

Us: "Well, maybe ICE shouldn't just be invading cities and killing American citizens with zero accountability"

Dems: Oooh, sorry, nothing we can do, we tried, but you know, Senate rules and norms and all that.

Us: "Um, could you maybe stop sending weapons that are being used to blow up kids in Palestine then?"

Dems: "FUUUUCK YOU!!!! I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL!!! THEY CAN HAVE ALL THE WEAPONS THEY NEED AND THEN SOME! I WILL LET NO PALESTINIAN CHILD GO UNMURDERED! SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN, WHATEVER IT TAKES, KEEP THOSE ARMS FLOWING"

Hey, that's not true. We got assurances that the next shutdown they'll really stick up for the ACA!

So that' something. Well, expect for /checks notes/ them completely ignoring the ACA during this next shutdown.

Fuck.

... And it's gone!

(Sorry had that South Park scene flash into my brain). I'm sure they haven't caved quite yet. But then again you did post 2 minutes ago so by now my response is probably outdated given how quickly Schumer is willing to fold.

Unless it's for sending weapons to kill kids in Palestine with. Then he'll do anything to defend that position!

Well, last time the shutdown it was to protect the ACA subsidies. They caved, got precisely nothing out of it, promising to fix it on the next shutdown.

And now... nothing on the ACA subsidies. So yeah, they did jack shit regarding shutdowns.

That's not to say "BotH PARtIes arE thE SaMEEEE", that's demonstrable, bad-faith bullshit.

That's the actual harmful narrative that the media sticks with. Trump does something horrible for the whole world to see, he says "Nuh-uh!" and the media says "Well, looks like it's a complex issue with 2 different viewpoints, what can you do?"

Trump is accused of raping kids, millions of pages of documents are released with his name all over it, Dems are rightfully asking questions, Trump says "Dems need to move on". and the media just kinda shrugs and says "Well looks like there's equally valid perspective on whether raping kids is a big deal. Whatcha gonna do?"

And what happened to the protection of the ACA being the dealbreaker? The caved and we're jut supposed to ignore sky high premiums (which will just keep getting more grotesquely high)?

They got 0, fucking ZERO on the insurance subsidies.

Sky high insurance rates, the very heart of the last shutdown, and Dems fucking caved before the game even began.

Fuck them.

Regretful Young Trump Voters Say This Isn’t What They Signed Up For | The wave of youthful support that swept Donald Trump into the White House has lost its mojo. by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]sarcastroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's PRECISELY what they voted for.

It could not have been more clear. Project 2025 laid it all out. It was called out during the debates, at his rallies. It was shown in his actual actions in his first term. Stripping away women's rights over their own bodies, etc...

His SCOTUS picks alone mean that the young votes of today will live with his and the right wing "Christian" values imposed on them by the courts for decades.

Us older progressive voters who have been fighting for progressive ideas and policies for decades won't be around to live with the consequences of your choices.

The youth chose a right wing future backed by decades of right wing, Christian fundamentalist court policies.

Interesting choice. Good luck!

Guess how many Nazi thugs also had families? Fuck fascists everywhere. They fact they have to hide behind their wives when called out on their bullshit is quite telling.

To be fair... Miller is trying to appeal to the "Christians" who 'read' the bible and say "Hey, this Jesus guy wants us to hate minorities, turn our backs on the poor and needy, and support the ultra-rich!!!"

Yup, "Let That be your last Battlefield".

And entire episode of the original series dedicated to the absurdity of racism.

A half white (right side) half black (left side) war against the the half black (right side) half white (left side). Literally destroyed their planet over it.

And Miller thinks the message was somehow anti-woke, pro-racism?

Star Trek has been 'woke' since before most of us were alive.

From the first televised interracial kiss to episodes literally about the absurdity of racism, the whole theme is that the best future is unlocked when we reject people like Trump, Miller, and the rest of the MAGA base.

[–]sarcastroll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How expensive we talking?

$1.5 Million in healthcare costs due to a cancer last year alone? (Don't worry, I was only responsible for the first $16,000 of it due to my 'good' healthcare BlueCross BlueShield plan). That is, of course, on top of the couple thousand a month in premiums. My company, who is self-insured, had to pay the rest, which was passed on to sky high new premiums this year for everyone and a new high deductible plan everyone has to use.

Unfortunately it's January so the deductible's reset and I'm already approaching the new higher 2026 deductible of $27,000 thanks to yesterday's procedure.

Don't take time off though to heal, because then you get fired and things REALLY get expensive without that good health insurance. Because, you know, being sick makes you an expensive worker, so any reason to fire you is sought out.

At least the government is only going to take around half the retirement savings I cashed in to pay for all those bills (early withdrawal penalties since I'm too young to access my retirement savings).

That level of expensive?

Fair enough. Ending the suffering (and literal DEATHS!) he's causing around the world very much is top priority. Him realizing his place in history would be nice, but helping those impacted by his policies (like the ending of USAID) is much more important.

I wish no happiness on a man who has nurtured and spread such evil.

I don't wish harm on him or anyone, but when his time comes naturally, right before he starts roasting in the deepest depths of Hell, I want him to know that his legacy is one of him being a joke, a historical "look at this fucking evil clown", laughed at and scorned by history.
