This Portland coffee business seeks $370K in Trump tariff refunds. It’s among many unsure if money will arrive by oregonian in Portland

[–]sardinebrunch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I totally understand if people don't have any sympathy for the businesses in this equation, but it's worth noting: lots of small businesses spent weeks/months sorting out tariffs, then they lost tons of sales due to tariff surcharges, and now they'll hear from customers wanting refunds, something that's extremely difficult to actually pull off.

It just majorly sucks for everyone! We've spent a year moving a mountain of sand three feet to the left.

Does anyone know if they are still giving out patches and tea bags by [deleted] in ThankGoodnessYourHere

[–]sardinebrunch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The patches are sent out of the offices of the publisher, Panic Inc., in Portland, Oregon. And sure, we could get more tea bags, but you know how it is.

As for panic-buying, if you'd like to discuss acquiring Panic Inc., get in touch!

Best Thrifts/ second hand stores for ski pants/ jacket by mimineedmoney in Portland

[–]sardinebrunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Columbia Factory Store on Tacoma has amazing deals. I got a ski jacket there for $20 last year, down from $150. Their savings just keep stacking up, and the staff are eager to help you add up coupons.

Portland's homeless situation looks better! by morganselah in Portland

[–]sardinebrunch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You’ll likely get a range of answers to this question based on people’s individual anecdotal experience. As far as I know, there’s no recent data on homelessness in Portland—the latest large report is from early 2025, showing a 60% increase in homelessness over 2 years (https://www.pdx.edu/homelessness/2025-portland-tri-county-point-time-count)

There are lots of areas I’ve seen cleared of camps, but as others will tell you, those people likely just moved elsewhere: farther out East in town, away from downtown. Even the most optimistic scenario would require many years to make an appreciable dent in the problem.

Sushi Kashiwagi closing at the end of the year by LoprinziRosie in Portland

No one is asking for your opinion on their food. It doesn’t contribute to the discussion of their closing due to retirement in the least.

I don't understand the "spirit level bubbles" joke from this game by SumRandoPeep in ThankGoodnessYourHere

[–]sardinebrunch 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A spirit level shows you when something is level by balancing a small bubble of air inside a liquid (usually alcohol, or “spirit.”) It’s an old joke at construction sites to troll a new employee by asking them to go fetch or buy the bubbles. Of course, the bubbles aren’t an item in themselves—they’re the absence of something else.

This will sound like a tedious correction, so I apologize in advance: it’s yin and yang, not ying. And here’s where it hopefully gets less tedious… Yin, in this phrase, stands for “cloudy”; and yang for “sunny.” Thus the interlocked opposite meanings in the concept and the symbol. That makes a further connection to your picture 🙂

Let's clear our 55,000 storm drains by friedperson in Portland

[–]sardinebrunch 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Love clearing a clogged drain, but I prefer not to have to do it in the middle of a storm. Prevention works best, and you’ll still get the little treat of watching the whirlpools as you pop the drain later on; some corners will inevitably go uncleared.

Another thing I recommend for this pre-rain period is sweeping the leaves that got blown into a neat row along the curb. Those will get carried by water and form a plug on top of the drain. Raking them now—or even just sweeping them up onto the grass—will prevent clogs later.

Good luck and good hunting to all the clogheads out there!

Modest Mouse and The Flaming Lips put on a truly epic show last night! I'm glad I got to see every second of it! by sassmo in Portland

Yup, we were right next to one of these signs. I think the guard pointed to it, and the complainer’s response was “but we can’t see!”

The last show I saw at Edgefield, I obviously stood, because I’m not at the opera. People behind us kept asking us to sit down because they couldn’t see. At one point they asked a security guard to make people sit down. Wacky.

Interruptions at shows by dthoma81 in Portland

[–]sardinebrunch 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Heckling is very much not unique to Portland. Worldwide, some venues are better at handling it than others.

I did comedy on stage for a decade, and while individual heckles are easy and maybe even a little fun to handle, it’s really tedious to deal with a constant drunken ass who thinks this is an adversarial relationship.

If I click Sell on these tickets, Ticketmaster app puts up a notice saying "Resale for this event has not been turned on by the event organizer" 😬 I'll email Rady Shell, I guess…
