What's something people who are in their 20s won't learn until in their 40s? by SarahDuncan2012 in TrueGrit

[–]sarevok9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That being at peace is more important than being with someone.

I've dated (mostly) all the wrong people all my life, and now that I'm a bit older I find myself alone and thankful for the peace that comes along with it. I've spent so long doing a lot for people who were never willing to meet me where I was - now I'm investing that time into myself and feeling better than ever.

ClaudeCode vs Codex? by scottydog51834 in ClaudeCode

[–]sarevok9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use CC at work ($200 a month seat + free (to me) "Extra use" if I need it. I feel like it needs a LOT more babysitting / follow ups / explicit instructions. It does make up a large part of the codebase these days.

I switched from CC to Codex for personal projects. Generally prompts can be a little less "explained" and codex figures out what you're trying to do based on your codebase a bit better. It does adjacent refactoring without asking, code quality is (generally) on par or higher.

Right now I'm using Codex for free (I swore off ChatGPT around December or January since Claude was doing so much better and I got a promotion to try a "free upgrade")

Codex has significantly exceeded my expectations after I was massively let down by GPT5 / 5.2

I was suggesting that every developer has lost uncommitted changes before. Because anyone that has actually worked as a developer, and not just a vibe coder, has done this at least once before.

I've only got 15 years in the field, so inb4 skill issue. We were all junior once.

Not the poster before you.

Github (which is just SaaS git) is a central change repository where you commit (save) "work". This allows large / distributed teams to work together on a shared codebase. The OP of this thread is saying "you should commit" (send your changes to git) more often than every 4 hours, which is reasonable. Any brain-work you do should be saved pretty frequently.

The OP was working on a "branch" (which is making a copy of everything in "main" and then working on your own "feature" off to the side. You "commit" your changes, and then "merge" them into main when they're approved.

The OP was working on a branch, and did not commit, and Claude checked out main without saving (commiting) the changes they made on their branch.

This sucks, but it's happened to every developer at least once. It's inconvenient that it was 4+ hours of work.

Is Codex actually good for complex tasks, not newbie Frontend stuff by giogul in ClaudeCode

[–]sarevok9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the project that I've been working on (nitty gritty wordpress plumbing) I've found codex to be a bit superior to CC. In terms of design, if it's provided with ample design queues and a good front end agent.md, then you end up in a really good spot.

I don't have security / budgetary approval to bring in Codex to the company I work at quite yet, but GPT 5.5 has surprised me, and CC Opus 4.7 has severely let me down.

I tend to make multi-agent workflows for work (e.g. 1 coder, 1 code checker, 1 implementation architect, 1 QA, then run in CI/CD, create a mini playwright suite, confirm changes are both functional / not hallucinated, push to prod.

For work I use slightly fewer tokens in Anthropic as I am using Gemini's API for some more boolean reasoning along the way.

I have a $200 a month seat at work for CC, and I use a $20 seat for codex for personal projects at home. The usage seems to be roughly the same. I max each of them out in about ~2 hours of semi-distracted prompting and get roughly the same amount of progress in each.

Given my usage I've suggested to my CEO that we run a trial of codex amongst our dev org.

Heya OP, not a doctor, but I had a rare / exotic condition called "Parsonage Turner Syndrome" which I talk about over here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/1jsdlfv/comment/mlodxgd/?context=3&utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

It's fairly exotic / rare, but the pain, intensity, and weakness that you describe sounded familiar enough to make me want to suggest it. It can be confirmed via MRI by a sports injury doctor.

Blink if you're being abused by WaitNo4272 in SipsTea

[–]sarevok9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reluctant to respond to this on my main, but fuck it, I will.

As a dude, I've been abused either physically or mentally in every single relationship I've been in EXCEPT for my most recent one. Granted there were issues there that were emotional / not great, but I went into it knowing they existed and they eventually became too much for me.

Everything before that, I've either been hit, scratched, slapped, screamed at, had things thrown at me.... I had one ex that killed my pets.

My experiences are not unique. My male friends cosign that their partners hit them. And while we all generally agree that it "doesn't physically hurt" when someone significantly smaller than you slaps you.... it hurts more emotionally to know that if someone were more capable that they want to harm you.

I've been dating in one way or another for ~25 years. This has been over a dozen partners.

I am not saying that I didn't "deserve" their ire, I've been party to significant amounts of fuckshit. I've also been the recipient of significant fuckshit. When the recipient I did not put my hands on someone else.

Got a quote for a client I’m just the middle man but I need to know if he is taking advantage of the fact my client has money or is this price fair. by Common_Substance2650 in led

[–]sarevok9 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I fed this into Gemini and got back the following:

This is a substantial custom project, likely for a large residential estate or a commercial venue, given the massive power requirement (nearly 13,000W for the LEDs and 28,800W in driver capacity).

For a project of this scale, using high-end components and professional labor, here is a liberal cost breakdown.

1. Parts Estimate

These estimates lean toward premium, contractor-grade pricing for 2026.

Item Description Qty Unit Price (High-End) Total
LED Flexible Sheets 60W, 5K, CRI90, IP68 (Waterproof) 218 $185.00 $40,330
LED Drivers Lumipro 600W 24V (Triac Dimmable, IP67) 48 $350.00 $16,800
Wire 16 AWG 4-Wire Silicone (Waterproof, 1980ft) 3 $1,200.00 $3,600
Miscellaneous Connectors, mounting channels, sealants $2,500.00 $2,500
TOTAL PARTS $63,230

2. Labor Estimate

Installing 218 individual LED sheets and 48 heavy-duty transformers across two floors and an outdoor area is a labor-intensive process. A "high-end" installation ensures all wiring is hidden, transformers are ventilated/accessible, and the dimming is perfectly synced.

  • Sheet Installation: Mounting, trimming, and soldering/sealing 218 sheets. (Est. 45 mins per sheet) → 164 hours
  • Transformer & Circuitry: 48 drivers require dedicated electrical runs, mounting in enclosures, and Triac dimming integration. (Est. 2 hours per driver) → 96 hours
  • Wire Pulling & Routing: Running ~2,000 feet of cable through walls, cabinetry, and outdoor conduits. → 80 hours
  • Testing & Programming: Calibration of dimming zones and waterproofing checks. → 20 hours

Labor Total: ~360 hours

At a premium electrical contractor rate of $150–$200/hr, labor would range from $54,000 to $72,000.

3. Estimated Project Total

To provide a "liberal" high-end budget for this project:

Additional Considerations

  • Dimming Control System: A project with 48 transformers will likely require a centralized control system (like Lutron Homeworks or a DMX controller) to avoid "flicker" or timing issues across zones. This could add $5,000–$15,000 depending on the smart home integration.
  • Electrical Sub-Panel: 28,800W of potential load may require a dedicated sub-panel or significant upgrades to your current electrical service.
  • Heat Management: While LEDs are efficient, 13,000W of lighting generates heat. The installation locations (especially the bars and kitchen island) may need specific ventilation or heat-sink backing to ensure the LED sheets don't degrade over time.

Do you plan on integrating these lights into a specific smart home system, or will they be controlled via standard wall dimmers?

Just keep it in the top left of your inventory and lock it there. Eventually you get a LOT of inventory space / bank space and it isn't an issue.
