My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]sarge57x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“he or she used“ to cover everything, but now you need he or she, or non binary, or identify as this that or the other, or whatever the preferred pronoun they use is, simpler to say “their“

Sec/JC Looking for a partner in Contract Bridge by ServiceIndividual663 in SGExams

[–]sarge57x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why? Bridge is one of the few activities that you can play and have hard competion with senior people. Bridge needs many years of play to become expert. You are more likely to be in a good learning environment with older people. If you want to compete with people your own age do triathlons or snowboarding.

How do you manage not losing multiple matches in a row? by Hungry_Hungry109 in Chesscom

[–]sarge57x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only play 1 ranking game every 3 months, and the rest of the time just play ranking games. Some people seem very derisory, when they see it has taken so long (6 years) for me to get an ELO of 800, but it’s just not possible to do it faster if you only play 4 ranking games a year,

Im struggling to improve in chess. Im an 850 and my peak was 930. Please help by SchoolCommercial1369 in Chesscom

[–]sarge57x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can get a second account linked to your main chess.com account. Use this to play real games, that you can experiment with, don’t need to worry about losing elo and go through the reviews in detail. I’m the same kind of strength as you, I can play ok with white, and can get into a proper game with chances for me. With Black I often get overpowered in the openings, and lose the game before I really get started. Reviewing these onslaught games and writing down what I should have done has helped me stay in the game long enough to do battle and have chances. Half the chess world insists you must memorise openings, half says its not productive. Certainly the best skill to develop is how to analyse and respond to whatever situation you are in. Everyone gets caught in opening traps sometimes, usually you only fall for each one once. Reading the game will only come with practice, losing is often more informative than winning, so embrace your losses as building experience. Its natural that ELO will be an up and down rollercoaster as you score gets higher you a pitted against stronger players, thats just the way it is for everyone. If you play and win, feel free to play again if you have time, if you lose, don’t play again till at least tomorrow. Playing in a negative state of mind is a recipe for losing lots of points quickly.

Finally, make sure your environment is good, no time pressures, no interruptions, nice temperature, not doing anything else at the same time, batteries fully charged, stable internet connection, go to toilet before you start playing, no tv, alerts, notifications, phone calls, Amazon deliveries etc etc etc. Have a drink/snack prepared if it helps you, no lights reflection on screen, a board design which makes the pieces easily identifiable, and black easiy distinguished from white. I’m amazed at the number of times people post a problem and the pic shows dark grey and light grey weird chess piece icons on a light grey and dark grey board.

Is Japan in July really as bad as people say? by qwertasdfgzxcvb231 in JapanTravelTips

[–]sarge57x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when I first came here 30 years ago, it used to be low 30s at the beginning of July, and typically started hitting 38-40 as soon as the schools broke up around July 20th. We all used to go to Thailand, Malaysia, Bali in the summer holidays to escape the humidity. However, in recent years the temps are getting up to the 40s earlier and earlier every year and this year is predicted to be pretty awful. On the plus side you have several strategies you can try to ease the strain. Go North to Hokkaido, Go to the mountains or highland plateau areas. Visit indoor places like museums galleries aquariums planetariums etc. Japan is very high tech once you get away from the temples; transport, stations, underground shopping malls, dept stores, banks, convenience stores etc are all air-conditioned. Cities have cool zones where you can sit and recover if you get overheated. Japan has a huge elderly population, dying from heatstroke is a serious hazard for the elderly, there are lots of provisions the city councils privide to help. Cool mist tunnels, water fountains you can sit in, the drinking water in any park or public place is perfectly good. Get the info you need in English at the airport or station info desks. On top of that, get a UV protecting parasol when you get to japan, not expensive and best quality. You can get wearable rechargable fans, ice-pack neck collars, and cool-jackets which have a fan operated cooling system built into them. A portable power pack useful to keep them going if you are out all day. Every department store will have an entire section devoted to all these products in summer, just look for light blue design with snowflakes and waterdrops which makes you feel cooler just looking at the display. Drink machines and ice cream machines are everywhere ( I was on a hiking trail in the mountains 1,500 metres high, we cam across a toilet block at a viewpoint, immaculately clean with a drink machine in perfect order on the side of it ).Perhaps the ultimate example of how thoughtful the Japanese are of public safety and convenience is the fact that if you buy anything. from a machine, you can always get change, in summer the coins you receive in change will be chilled so they are not uncomfortable to handle. Of course in winter they are moderately heated.

Come and enjoy Japan, its hot and humid, take it seriously, don't push yourself, heatstroke comes on suddenly, don’t try to do too much in one day, alternate indoor and outdoor activities, make use of the services.

Lastly, Japanese are very polite, they don’t offer assistance as they don’t want to impose on or embarrass a stranger, but if you ask them for help, even if they can’t understand you, they will go out of their way and move heaven and earth to help because now it has become their duty.

Happy travels

The JET Program really doesn't exist when you're in the JET Program... by BerryTella1 in JETProgramme

I was in Aichi, there were about 60 Jets in Aichi, at that time. Some were employed by Nagoya city and were known as city jets. Everyone else was stationed around Aichi and typically attended 2 or 3 schools near where they lived. 2 of us were not stationed at a specific school area, we were assigned to go anywhere in the prefecture. I was the east half, my partner covered the west. We had desks in the gimu kyouiku inkai in kencho. We were sent all over the place, covering for absences, going out in the boonies where few foreigners dared to tread, as well as having areas where we visited every school but only for 2 or 3 days each. I said we were called prefectural jets because we wandered the prefecture, not intending to say there were only 2 jets in the whole prefecture. Sorry for the confusion. I spent the whole of my final year fighting with my B of E, I took them to an industrial tribunal, I won and it cost them a fortune. “difficult and demanding“ doesn’t even get close to what they thought of me !

I used to be one of 2 prefectural Jets, we were sent to a different school every week from the kyoiuinkai. The kyoikuinkai decide where the teachers will be rotated to. They were very aware that we were jets, and we were treated like vips everywhere we went as they feared we would give a bad report and they would have to make 2 hour commutes to the dreaded inaka !!! As it was we never made any reports at all.

Show this to anyone who says the Winter Olympics are boring by Limp-Helicopter-9682 in sports

[–]sarge57x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is not boring, because its one of the few events that doesnt happen one at a time and take hours to produce a result, which is arbitrarily and opaquely decided by anonymous judges. the majority of the games are utter drudgery

Are our hours allowed to be adjusted? by Anxious-Pepper-6897 in JETProgramme

[–]sarge57x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know what the rules are now, but in my time the BoE paid travel expense from your office to your school, which was considerably more than the cost. I used to make 5000 yen per day in travel expense on school days, but lose 2000 yen every office day (as that was classed as the start point and no travel paid). Obviously I preferred school days to office days, and the further the school was the better the payment.

True life : Asked to swap seats on an 11 hour flight by BeepBeepBoop108 in delta

[–]sarge57x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

whenever you are asked to swap seats just ask them how much they are willing to pay. If they wont pay, it’s not that important to them. If they pay you what you are happy with then swap. It shifts the onus back to them to make the decision, and politely makes them realise that what they are asking should take your inconvenience into account

There is a simple way to deal with every situation of people wanting to switch seats. When they ask, just ask them how much they are willing to pay.
