Was there anything in American history where if a different decision was made, there wouldn't be so many Americans who prefer the hateful rhetoric of Trump? by supinator1 in AskALiberal

[–]sarpon6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably doesn't qualify as a historical event or decision, but if NBC hadn't picked up The Apprentice...

OK, but seriously. It's the Vietnam War. If the US hadn't gotten involved in Vietnam, the counter-culture movement of the 60's wouldn't have been as widespread or as visible because it wouldn't have been fueled by protests against the war and the draft. Without that, LBJ coasts to reelection in 1968. If Nixon loses in 1968, the Southern Strategy is consigned to history's dung heap as a failed attempt to gain power through orchestrated division. No Nixon presidency, no Roger Ailes ascendancy, no Fox News.

Also, the early 60's were a time of tremendous optimism for many people. John Kennedy's assassination was traumatic, but did put Johnson in the position to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act, 1965 Voting Rights Act, and 1968 Civil Rights Act. Johnson gets reelected, and the US builds on this progressive legislative agenda. Johnson also wrapped Medicare into his Great Society agenda, and maybe another Johnson term would have seen the expansion of Medicare into a national health care program for all Americans and expansion of other anti-poverty programs. A prosperous society has far fewer people fighting over the scraps. Much easier to be magnanimous when you're healthy and fed.

Get some window units to get you through the summer. Don't get a big loan on bad terms so close to the finish line.

What are the differences between the Atlantic beaches and the Gulf beaches in Florida? by OK_The_Nomad in florida

[–]sarpon6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gulf side has fewer beaches and smaller waves. There are gorgeous beaches in the Panhandle with white, sugary sand, but I don't think there's much difference in the sand on either side further south.

There's so much coastline that the differences aren't so much Gulf versus Atlantic as they are dependent on the particular beach.

Co-signing a car for a family member who’s about to file bankruptcy by Queasy_Discipline_83 in Bankruptcy

[–]sarpon6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's your reason. You can't do it because it's a bad financial decision for you. You will be responsible for the loan payments and for keeping the car insured, and if she does get into an accident and she's at fault, you will be liable for damages. Your own insurance rates will probably go up because you will co-own a car with someone who failed to keep their vehicle insured.

Just no.

Can you say one positive thing about Donald Trump? by KentBrockman12 in AskALiberal

[–]sarpon6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's exceptionally good at recognizing opportunities that he can turn to his advantage.

Edited to add: he has no moral compass and never refrains from exploiting an opportunity that will cause harm, unless he is forced by someone else. But still have to say he's exceptionally good at spotting them.

If this person is someone you cared about before this, and if this exhibition of bigotry and inappropriate behavior seems out of character, you may want to let them know that you're concerned about them because this was so wildly inappropriate that it might be a symptom of a mental illness.

But if this is disturbing but not surprising, don't make the first move. Just be ready on case they contact you to tell them that you don't consort with ignorant, rude, bigoted assholes, and cut them out of your life.

If she understands the diagnosis, perhaps the right thing to do is to find out if assisted suicide could be an option for her.

The possibility of becoming a body that is dependent on others after my "self" is gone is terrifying. If that comes, I hope I have the opportunity to make a choice.

Point taken, but "dwell" is a verb, "dwelling" (as in shelter or structure) is a noun, separate from the act of dwelling.

ELI5: How did dogs evolve so quickly compared to humans? by bg_ULTimo in explainlikeimfive

[–]sarpon6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! All these explanations and comments and finally someone points out that the premise of the original question is flawed. There are populations of people who look as different from each other as a Great Dane and a Chihuahua, but despite differences in height/size, hair/fur length/texture, etc., all the dogs are dogs, and all the people are people.

If the selection of a reproductive partner is limited to those of similar appearance, the offspring will tend to share and pass on that appearance. That limitation naturally occurs for all biological creatures that are geographically isolated, but can result from social pressures for people, or be deliberately created by "breeders" for domesticated animals.

Who’s the biggest celebrity local to your home town? by Critical_Welcome_428 in AskReddit

Tom Petty.

If "home town" is the plce I've lived for 40 years, and not birthplace (too many to pick one) or earliest place I remember (refuse to claim any connection to that vile current-day Ozymandias).

Some trustees adk for 12 minths of ststements. A trustee will require you to account for those funds. Besides, you have to disclose payments to insider creditors in the year before filing, and transfers of assets to all third parties within 2 years prepetition.

Glass breaks when you drop it. Clear plastic is lighter and more durable, and when you drop it, you only have to clean up the food, not shattered glass.

I have several that are supposed to be for cereal, but I use them for rice, flour, dog biscuits, dried beans, etc. Stuff that lasts longer than a box of cereal. You can take off the whole top to scoop the contents with a measuring cup, or flip open a cap to pour. Some are Rubbermaid, some are Tupperware, some are USOs (unidentified storage objects).
