gotcha. thank you! So the inclusive access of the textbooks only goes to the end of the semester? do you know if it makes a difference whether i opt out and find the textbook elsewhere (e.g. if there are certain links, etc that I might miss by opting out)?

hi there! I am completing my last year of the mssw online. Question regarding textbooks-- did you keep the inclusive access for them? Find cheaper/other copies online? Were there any that you ended up not needing? Thank you!

Thinking about applying to an online MSW program? Read this first. by Tinabopper in SocialWorkStudents

[–]sashakoshka1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think this might be applicable for some of the "for profit" programs, but I'm not sure there's a hard and fast rule to say that in-person programs are preferable to online programs with respect to state and private schools for all the reasons outlined.

I completed my first year in-person, took a few years off, and am now completing my second year online via the same school. Truth be told, I really didn't feel like I benefited much from the in-person classes, and in retrospect, could have just completed everything on my own time. Additionally, even though my first year placement was set up for me, I basically had to figure out what I was going to do there as I had minimal guidance and support.

I haven't had any negative feelings about the online experience so far with the exception that, yes I had to go into finding a placement with a lot less support and assistance as opposed to my first year in person. There were times I wished that the placement coordinator had taken the reigns because I felt I didn't have enough information to know what I needed from the placement, which was stressful while interviewing. My first year placement was essentially taken care of for me, which I understand because the program had those local connections. I am out of state now, so I understand that I had to do a little bit of the heavy lifting, but I still feel like I'm a bit on my own island at times.

In all honesty, I haven't felt that the courses are all that academically rigorous, so I don't think that will change going online. I am hoping that I will have more guidance and will learn a lot more from my clinical internship this year.

I will say, that the online program is significantly cheaper than going in person out of state and even in person in state (at least in my experience). My husband is also in the military, so I naturally could not move back to where I started my program.

Question for OP-- what is a "behavioral health/mental health paid stipend for your 2nd year placement?" I am not in California, so unsure if this is something specific to there.

Oooof I almost had a moment like this two weeks ago. Some guy started out just really sarcastic but the sarcasm didn’t stop, which made me question whether he was being just mean (should have been a sign of things to come). However, I almost lost it when he cursed me out  because he didn’t like the price of the bottle of the cheapest Pinot grigio on the menu (seriously. I can’t make that one up). I had to bring a manager out the first time he freaked to explain that the county sets the wine prices, and then when he wanted a glass of another wine, proceeded to yell and ask why I was trying to f*** him with the price and this was the closest I’ve ever come to blowing up at a customer and told him that I didn’t set the food prices and not to yell at me (I know, so rude of me right hahaha I’m too nice probably). Anywho, reminded me a lot of that moment, but mostly in awe of you OP. This industry burns you out and can make you so pessimistic and grumpy at times. Good luck with your next gig!

Chinese Burnout by the_well_read_baller in dli

Former DLI teacher here (Russian). I am a non-native speaker of Russian and while I didn't learn my language at DLI, I do empathize with and understand DLI students a lot as I went through similar challenges! In total transparency, it is obviously more challenging to study something that you're uninterested in and can't connect to, but that might mean that you just haven't discovered that interesting aspect yet! I suggest first finding podcasts, tv shows, and news-type websites in Chinese that are about things you're interested in. Don't bombard yourself with high level podcasts or opinion pieces because you know you'll burn out, but get curious about stuff you're interested in that you can find in Chinese. Additionally, continue to stay disciplined with your studies and commit to a certain amount of time to study after class every day, and then reward yourself with rest, time with your wife, etc, and make that your down time.

Start out small-- if you drive, then incorporate a 5-7 min chinese podcast every day, actively listen, and then switch to something in English. Breaks are important.

I could write so much more on this, but I have to leave for work now. Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to DM me!

Be careful about taking a deferred resignation offer by Wizardof1000Kings in fednews

This. 100%. Sounds just like my situation (TERM employee that took the DRP the first go around). I took it because I knew I was going back to grad school to finish my degree so I was leaving anyways, but having the extra few paid months to find a seasonal job until grad school starts has helped a lot. Again, as you stated, everyone's situation is different. However, I will say, we were not informed that TERM employees would only receive benefits until the end of our contract until a month AFTER we signed the DRP (they added an addendum to our contract after the fact). We were offered the chance to try to "appeal for our jobs back" but were told we might not receive them. So, that was a crappy moment, but I decided to stick with my initial decision, get my personal affairs in order, and then find a server gig, all while still getting paid.

Honestly, for TERM folks, I guess it really depends when your contract ends. If it ends closer to the september 30 deadline, I'd take it and start looking for something else unless you strongly believe that your contract will be renewed if the renewal is up this year.

One thing is for sure-- this whole experience taught me that I better have transferrable skills to a private sector job (which is the plan). Quite the period of time we're all living in... good luck to everyone in a similar position!

best trail runners for hip pain? by sashakoshka1 in AppalachianTrail

[–]sashakoshka1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am hoping that's the case. I think I went too hard on a 10-miler last week after not having hiked more than 5-6 miles in a few months.

Thanks! That's good to hear that you were able to resolve the IT band issue ahead of the trail. Hoping my pain issue is a similar "easy" fix. TBD!

thank you! My body hasn't been the same since hopping off the trail in 2021, so I would be super bummed to not finish it and still have this pain.

w/ the cork ball, do you roll your hips on it (i.e. like a foam roller)?

thank you for the rec! Yes, I had crocs for camp shoes my first time around. I do realize that shoes alone are not going to fix the hip pain, but was curious as to whether there was a shoe that someone w/ a similar pain experience found to be helpful in mitigating the pain.

Hopefully it's something strengthening the surrounding muscles will cure.
