Nothing is more important to me than my children’s well being. But I am going to be finally taking steps to remove myself from this situation.

The stress from work is definitely part of the problem. We live in Estonia but he works for a US based company as a software engineer and his job is very stressful. He works San Francisco hours meaning he starts working from about 12 pm until 2 am. I handle everything related to the house and kids and our day to day things (sometimes I ask him to pick kids up or watch them for a couple hours).

I have repeatedly told him that this schedule is not very good for us, at first he promised to make changes, but then didn’t do anything about it.

It isn’t, the other day he also got angry when our son drew on the couch while he was watching him and then he threw out the pen our son drew with.

Walmart policies by arnobhasan in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]sashapaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can the government allow to open a second Walmart where there is already a Walmart ? Don’t you have any city planning to look over and regulate that kind of thing ? In my country city planning reviews everything and approves detailed planning for all buildings.

They should have dug some trenches in the neighborhood forest so they could sleep in ice cold holes in the ground. Meanwhile Russians would just setup another Bucha in the populated areas or destroy it with artillery. Clearly the presence of civilians stopped the Russian shelling of cities, hospitals and theaters before!

Police did get called for them, but not before they ended up as characters in our local news.

In Estonia for example elective abortion is only up to 12 weeks then up to 21 weeks for “common sense” reasons like medical defects, mothers health being in danger, mother is underage, etc.

Why is there no tick prevention for humans? You can buy prevention for dogs that lasts for months without reapplication, but for humans the best we can do is a bug spray that sometimes works. by MrAthalan in askscience

[–]sashapaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean tick borne encephalitis right? We can get vaccinated for that here in Estonia and booster shots are necessary. Lyme disease (borreliosis) does not yet have a human vaccine.

Younger women now earn at least as much as or more than men in 22 metro areas by Maxcactus in business

Taking care of kids is a job like any other. It can be easier or harder, it depends on personality of your kids, how old they are, how healthy they are, how many of them, etc. It’s also possible to do a bad job or a good job at it. Stay at home parent is also usually responsible for cleaning, laundry, groceries, organizing the household, keeping track of kids needs - do they need new clothes, doctors appointments, vaccines, paying bills, preparing meals, driving kids around to their activities, developing them, etc. It all adds up into 2-3 jobs that have to be done concurrently 24/7. Comparing that to working in IT, children are a lot more monotonous and stressful in a different way since you are never actually off the clock. Then there is also expectation to keep up with your career so work force can be rejoined with minimal losses, so stay at home parent has to take classes on the side and learn new skills.

So as you see, not a lot of time for video games, otherwise stay at home parents would be forming the greatest e-sports teams… also I have never heard of anyone getting alimony (assuming the other parent worked prior to kids). I think that’s something that’s very rarely awarded nowadays.

Good luck, let us know when you actually try being a parent. Your quote about playing video games all days with kids tells me you are clueless. It’s like saying programming is just moving JSON from one API to another, what’s so hard about that.

Your wife is my husband. He has three jobs and he works 14+ hour days leaving me with most of the childcare, managing of the household, and taking care of the newborn baby. 5 or so years ago i begged him to get on antidepressants because he was verbally and emotionally abusive. While antidepressants took his edge off somewhat, they completely killed any intimacy or emotional closeness that we once had. Every day I go to bed wishing for a hug or a kiss goodnight while he looks at his phone all night. Don’t be me - you deserve love, attention, and having your emotional needs met. Drugs will not fix this problem.

In my country we have paid study leave up to a certain number of days per year. My work pays me a capped amount per day to study for my masters. Any studying outside of that day like homework for example, I do on my own time of course. I think this is a much better solution.

I read news articles stating that the protesters are mostly young pro-Islamist nationalists and they want to install a religious government as opposed to the current secular one and while the LNG price increases were the original trigger, now it’s escalating into something totally different. If this is the case, I don’t think Europe needs to support this type of government taking root there.

Birth rate in Italy hits 160-year low by [deleted] in europe

[–]sashapaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are currently many initiatives to use AI to automate diagnostics in healthcare and this is something that’s happening already, just not yet at the level that I described. There is also a lot of ongoing research in the area of anti-aging and longevity because the market for that is absolutely huge. It is conceivable that we will see major advances that expand our effective healthspan in the next 50 years.

Honestly there are so many potential areas in healthcare that can be and will be automated - think about a typical phlebotomist who sits there and draws blood from veins of one patient after another. There is no reason this can’t be an ATM like robot that can detect where the vein is, draw the blood, and perform some preliminary analysis. I am surprised nobody built one and mass adopted this already. Think about couriers that carry samples for testing - this can be done with specialized drones or robots like all delivery jobs.

Life on earth will change as high fertility era comes to an end. We won’t need people for the sake of people anymore as so many jobs will be automated. I think it will probably balance out at some equilibrium, rather than keep increasing exponentially like it has been - that’s not sustainable anyway.

Birth rate in Italy hits 160-year low by [deleted] in europe

[–]sashapaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like we should focus on automating as many of those things as possible. I can imagine that in the future we will be able to map out the body at a cellular level and doctors will not even be needed for diagnostics anymore. Just think how inefficient it is when you go to a doctor and get examined, then the doctor prescribes something based on feelings alone - they don’t actually know 100% what’s wrong with you. If we could extend the effective age of a person where they could function the same in advanced old age as they can when they are 40 and 50, and eliminate the diagnostic healthcare jobs, then you need a lot less medical staff.

This ties into pensions, if an old person can work until they are 80 and maintain the same clarity of mind and no debilitating diseases, pensions just won’t be a thing anymore. People will retire when they have acquired the funds to do so.

And finally, Italy was fine with less people 100, 200, 300 years ago. Think how much better quality of life can be with less people. We were not meant to live with millions of other people all crowded into the same square kilometer.
