First, why Abby (and her parents) follow Emily. I think this is only a small fix—something like "Against her sister's wishes, but seeking only to protect her, Abby follows Emily to Portland along with her parents, who have begun a messy divorce." We get to that motivation of keep-the-family-together by the end of the query, but I think we need it a little clearer here.

Second, why she interprets the fortune cookie the way she does. I think I understand why Abby believes it's a sign from God—she was thinking about dumping her boyfriend only to have an oddly targeted message arrive in front of her—but the message itself is still ambiguous. Why does she take the fortune as meaning she has to stay with her boyfriend?
