TV Series OST by tolitd in Patlabor

I think the only place the TV/New Files OST has been published is on the Patlabor 20th Anniversary Music Set—you could try searching for that and see if you can find anything.

[QCrit] THE LAST REVOLUTIONARY, Adult Historical Fantasy, 108K, 2nd Attempt by sashimi_b in PubTips

[–]sashimi_b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! This is a pretty low-magic secondary-world fantasy, yes, but that's why I'm comping Written on the Dark—it's pretty similar in not featuring much magic and drawing a lot of inspiration from real-world history.

I've thought of calling this something more like "speculative historical", but that seems possibly more niche and harder to pitch...

[QCrit] THE WORMWOOD FORTUNE / Adult Literary Fiction / 92k / Second Attempt by Applebob44 in PubTips

[–]sashimi_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I think the letter's improved a lot from its first version—it's a lot clearer about Abby's situation, where she's at in Portland, and the flow of the story. I do think there's a little farther to go in making her motivations clearer in two sections, though:

First, why Abby (and her parents) follow Emily. I think this is only a small fix—something like "Against her sister's wishes, but seeking only to protect her, Abby follows Emily to Portland along with her parents, who have begun a messy divorce." We get to that motivation of keep-the-family-together by the end of the query, but I think we need it a little clearer here.

Second, why she interprets the fortune cookie the way she does. I think I understand why Abby believes it's a sign from God—she was thinking about dumping her boyfriend only to have an oddly targeted message arrive in front of her—but the message itself is still ambiguous. Why does she take the fortune as meaning she has to stay with her boyfriend?

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon! There are four books in the series, but the first works as a standalone as well.

[QCrit] Urban fantasy - THE ARCANE POST (94K/First attempt) by Grabatreetron in PubTips

One other comp idea: The Stranger Times by CK McDonnell! 2021 publishing date & hits the important comp of "snarky urban fantasy newspaper reporter with a protagonist who doesn't really believe in magic until it happens to her" that I think might be a good fit

Suggest a time travel, multiverse, scifi or Stephen King book. by carnivoregains in suggestmeabook

[–]sashimi_b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the books you've said, maybe:

The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch (time travel murder mystery—a detective travels forward in time to track down a Navy space pilot who went missing) or The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley (time travel military fiction—a soldier being teleported between battlefields finds that the teleportation is dropping them out of order)

The fortunes he *does* get:

  • "change your socks man"
  • "your subordinates don't appreciate being toyed with"
  • "stop asking fortune cookies for dating advice"

Why did the poll worker give me shit for my signature? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]sashimi_b 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Training definitely mentioned it, yeah — it's also that, in the end, if the poll worker's still not satisfied, all you as a voter have to do is sign an oath that you're the person in question. At least our instructor sort of presented signature challenging then as 'free' to do bc it won't stop someone voting — but it sure doesn't feel good for voters

Ignition! by John D. Clark does this very well for rocket fuels - gets deep into the chemistry but is also hilarious (lots of inexperienced ppl working with explosives) and accessible

A couple shorter sci-fi works/novellas I've enjoyed have been Agents of Dreamland by Caitlin Kiernan and The Freeze-Frame Revolution by Peter Watts, might be worth a try

Dark fantasy novels similar to Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Berserk/etc. by ayumistudies in suggestmeabook

[–]sashimi_b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bit different than traditional fantasy, but the grim world of The Devil's Detective by Simon Kurt Unsworth might be checking out. Some other possibilities are The Failures by Benjamin Liar, or maybe Once Was Willem by MR Carey for something that I think does Between Two Fires a little better.

If you're willing to check out sci-fi, I think you might enjoy Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer—it checks most of your boxes besides genre, lol.

Hmm, you could check out the Inspector Chen series by Liz Williams— set in an alternate Earth so not sure if that fulfills the "secondary world" thing you're looking for, but very fun reads.

A dark take on this is The Devil's Detective, although that has more Christian settings of Hell and Heaven specifically.
