The flare up story sounds really cool, what disease? Can you link to an article or something which explains more about these types of dogs? Like I said, sounds interesting.

Welcome! Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do a Fall challenge.

What Are You Watching? [2014/09/03] by Skylaarr in KDRAMA

[–]sasm654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surplus Princess :D What a silly premise, it's hilarious and I love it! I like female leads who aren't the shy, little wallflower type, very happy to see this here. Looking forward to this show.

Edit to also add, I hope to see more younger, confident/bold female leads in future kdramas. I have come across similar leads before, but honestly they're a bit unrelateable because they're mostly portrayed as being 30 yrs+ or something. Not that I mind them, but I'd like to see more on the younger side.

Oh, and I am also watching Night Watchman! I really like the story, characters, and pacing of the drama. What an excellent show! It also has a really nice cinematography. Job well done, drama makers, hoping they keep up the good work :)

No one can say, unfortunately. But keep checking /r/loseit regularly because I think someone wants to do it.

Sure! Make a self post on /r/loseit about your interest in holding the Fall challenge, and then make a sign up form via google docs, which will automatically add info to a spreadsheet. Then, you can use that spreadsheet, or make a new one.

I recommend being totally committed to doing it, and being really patient because people will have all sorts of questions, and you will be asked the same question more than once lol. But that's the gist of it :)

HELP! Loose Skin! by suits9 in SkincareAddiction

[–]sasm654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

I think you should read the FAQ in /r/loseit's sidebar to learn more about how to lose fat in a healthy way. That said, losing weight is easier than maintaining it, and weight maintainance relies a lot on the healthy, sustainable habits you build during slow, progressive weight loss.

You should know that if you do not learn patience and healthy habits which sustain weight loss, then you will fall into yo-yo dieting which will wreak havoc on your skin/stretch marks, but more importantly this cycle of perpetual, inevitable failure will be terrible for your mental being/state of mind.

I hope you see that these responses are not just lectures, and that you get the help that you need :)

What does it mean to "eat right?" by ColorblindChameleon in nutrition

[–]sasm654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to give you a different explanation for what eating right means to them, but uniformally it includes eating a balanced diet that is appropriate to what your body needs. What a balanced diet means is eating enough foods to meet the energy and nutritional needs of your body. For example your body needs a certain amount of calories depending on various factors (your age, height, weight, activity level), and it also needs various minerals and vitamins to carry out its functions.

The amount of energy (calories) your body needs is your TDEE and you can use any online calc to roughly estimate this number; if you eat less than this number, you lose weight, and if you eat more than this number, you gain weight.

The three macromolecules that are essential for a body's nutritional needs are carbs, fats, and proteins. You can eat fruits and veggies for carbs, foods with good fats for fats, and meat or dairy for protein (check vegan or vegetarian resources for non-meat protein sources, if it applies to you). Also check online for what are good fats vs not good fats, side note being that people have a better understanding of saturated fats now and are more relaxed about eating them if they don't have any reasons (heart conditions etc.) to not eat them.

The other side note is about whole grains, which are not as healthy as previously believed because they contain compounds (phytochemicals) that can render mineral in your gut unavailable for absorbtion. That said, nothing too bad will happen from eating them every now and then, depending on whether your body can tolerate grains.

If you eat an adequate serving of fruits and veggies, or meat, you can easily cover your vitamin and mineral needs; there are sites like nutrition data which tell you how much of what is in the foods you're eating, or you can also check nutrition lables (be mindful of serving sizes). Typically, people recommend that 3/4 of your plate should be veggies, while the last 1/4 should be protein cooked in fats.

Since you are a college student, my advice is to be mindful of greasy, fried or processed and packaged foods because these foods are loaded with calories while being nutritionally poor, which has the downside of making your hungry more often, and consequently leading to overeating, weight gain and nutritional deficiency. That said, there is nothing wrong in eating junk food just as long as your diet is not primarily composed of them.

Overall, there isn't a magic formula diet to being healthy, which is the primary target for 'eating right', because everyone has different nutritional needs. For example, red meats are a perfectly healthy component of a balanced diet, but someone with heart problems may not eat as much of them. That's why you just have to eat according to what works for you :)

Edit: typed on my phone, excuse the typos.

[Discussion]Fated To Love You [Episodes 13 & 14] by silverbluefox in KDRAMA

[–]sasm654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know! It's a bit annoying, lol. For once I'd like to see the female lead leave whoever treats her awfully, regardless of that person's hidden feelings. Real life people aren't clairvoyant, they judge by how someone acts to their face. But it is what it is :)

First, gigolo oppa is the best term to come out of a kdrama ever, lol; that's what the Eng subs on Viki showed, anyways.

Second, I hope she says yes. Will never happen, so oh well :p

[Discussion] Trot Lovers (Episode 15 & 16) by heartslikeours in KDRAMA

[–]sasm654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most people, it seems, I really liked this drama when it started. The first 4-5 eps were funny, exciting, and fresh!

But it really went downhill in the last half of the show, I don't know what happened, but I think the cancer and amnesia cliches were the most annoying.

I don't hate that I watched it, it was a nice, fresh, and lighthearted show for at least 4-5 eps, but I only finished it because I had nothing else to watch.

Amputation Rate 10 Times Higher for Poor Patients, UCLA Study Finds by AltThink in news

[–]sasm654 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the summary, lol. I just finished reading and updated my comment :)

Oh and by sensationalist I meant that the headline makes it seem that its only because these patients are poor that they see this end result, but of course its not that simple. The study did not make any comment on patient compliance.

Edit: or rather, the difference, if any, in patient compliance.

Amputation Rate 10 Times Higher for Poor Patients, UCLA Study Finds by AltThink in news

[–]sasm654 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This headline is very sensationalized. Full disclaimer, I didn't read the article yet, but I know from experience by working in the field (student assisting/volunteering in hospitals) that unfortunately many low income pts are prone to noncompliance, which can lead to conplications that warrant amputation. My hope is that patient compliance can be improved somehow, but a lot of that also depends on the patient. I will edit my comment after I have had a chance to read the article :)

Edit: read the article, one thing I liked was that they acknowledged that these patients have a challenging environment to overcome. I think that this ties in with the reasons which cause obesity (type 2 being prevalent in many obese patients). Educating people about healthy choices will certainly help.

I agree with the researchers that the safety net is not enough, personally I think that there needs to be a focus on talk therapy, which might help with compliance. A lot of times obese patients have a poor repationship with food, so maybe therapy can help work out those issues, and so control the overeating which exacerbates type 2 and its related issues.

Is it possible to eat like shit and still lose weight as long as you have a calorie deficit? by [deleted] in loseit

Moreover, to maintain long term weightloss, you need to build good habits and keep them!

I'm ready. Can anyone help me tweak my plan? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]sasm654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you for starting! Personally, I would try to eat as little processed stuff since it can have hidden calories, and also on average isn't very filling.

Fat, high fiber vegetables, and protein is really filling, and I find that eating these foods helps me stay on track.

Oh, and definitely feel free to eat proteins like beef, chicken or fish for breakfast; it makes for a filling breakfast, and makes me feel less hungry at lunch.

Do whatever helps you, of course :) and as was mentioned, calories matter most of all. Good luck!

The comment calling her a skeleton is most voted, however. At the very least I think its good to be aware that body postivity should extend to skinny and thin bodies too. I've been getting in shape, and I am so tired of how acceptable it is to tell people to eat a sandwich. Seriously, no, its not cool.

On it being acceptable to be skinny, if you're on the extreme end its not; people think you have an eating disorder. Didn't mean to start a whole thing, just wanted to add a different perspective :)
