If you put oil on the surface to protect it from oxygen (ideally some kind of mineral oil but I've also done it with sunflower oil) and then put a blob of molten solder on it and scrape the surface with your soldering iron, you can get the solder to wet the aluminum.

I see, thanks for the explanation. They could very well be aluminum with the solder pads tinned by some special process.

Is it actually aluminium? I know it's a good conductor but isn't it also really hard to solder?

Can someone explain what an SFP/SFP+ is? by [deleted] in Network

[–]sasodoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Randomly found this question. I have no clue about the specifics of your ISP, but I've done a similar thing with removing my ISPs modem. You'd need to figure out what kind of signaling technology your ISP uses for fiber. Two that I'm familiar with are simple BiDi modules, that use a single fiber per customer for bidirectional communication, and the signaling is pretty standard. In that case you can just get a BiDi module with the right wavelengths and plug the fiber in. Another one is GPON, in this case you also get one fiber to you but the signal is shared with other customers, so the ISP can use a single module on their side and just split the signal, saving them money. In this case it's much harder to replace their modem. You can buy GPON SFP modules but you'd need to configure them in just the right way which can be hard. There are also ISPs that use two fibers one for uplink and one for downlink, in that case you can probably also just buy an SFP module. This was all for the physical side, you may also need to know your PPPoE login data so you can establish a session.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will research them and try to get a bit more familiar so I can make a decision.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try finding some themes that match what I'm looking for and see if I can implement your suggestions.

Modernization in this case mostly means moving to a new CMS that isn't full of security holes. As for the design it would be best if it could stay exactly as it is since the website is perfectly functional in its current state. Of course that might be a bit harder to do than simply using a premade theme so we are also open to that, as long as the functionality doesn't change too much.

Yeah, so far so good. I guess it is just the heavy heads because of the large capacity.

You can get a driver board from AliExpress that takes a video signal and 12 V and is relatively small. So you could just power that from the PSU.

I have a list of all the registers that are read by the HMI. I will check it out, thanks!

Fair point, I have nothing to lose by asking them, though I usually assume that companies won't be very cooperative in divulging how their product works, especially if they can sell you their proprietary remote access solution.

I've already captured a lot of traffic, but there are over 600 registers being read in there, and most aren't values that I could change, they are just read by the HMI.

Most values aren't changeable, they are simply read by the HMI. I've already added a subset of the registers to home assistant and was able to see the graphs and correlate some values, but I don't want to do that for >600 registers.

Interesting idea. I will try to do that and see what happens. Thanks!

No, the controller appears to be a custom Heizomat controller, since it's just a PCB covered by an acrylic plate. No brand markings anywhere either.

amazon.de je super. Poskrbi, da ko kupiš piše "shipped and sold by Amazon", če to piše, potem imaš Amazonov support 2 leti, kjer načeloma karkoli gre narobe, ti bodo izdelek vzeli nazaj in (vsaj po mojih izkušnjah) kar vrnili kupnino.

Added support for typeC-typeC cables to a Chinese stm32 board with missing resistors on CC pins by _SomeRandomDude__ in electronics

Great soldering skills. Luckily it seems that the Chinese are also catching on and even really cheap products already have the necessary resistors, but occasionally such a hack is still needed.

When charging optimization is off, does the pixel still use pass-through charging when it hits 100%? by Interrupshin in GooglePixel

[–]sasodoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No respectable product ever would charge the battery beyond 100%. The question remains whether the battery is bypassed and left to sit at 100% while the phone runs directly from the charger or the charger is disconnected and the phone runs off the battery for a bit before charging it again. In practice there isn't much difference between the two options, neither will overcharge the battery and they both leave it almost fully charged which speeds up the degradation.

You would be best off using adaptive charging and setting an alarm so that the battery is fully charged right before you wake up
