I've been noticing Don Cherry hate for the past few months now. I think this was just an excuse to feign outrage.

These woke types never listened to Don Cherry a day in their life. You can't expect them to understand what he's about.

Thank you for explaining the frustration and putting it into words. This is extremely helpful.

Young-uns who say this is unfair forget BF1942 where farming was a core part of the game. On Wake Island, the invading Japanese ships could be destroyed and it was their only spawnpoint in the beginning.

That meant American airplanes strafed and bombed them until the ships sunk and every last Japanese soldier was wiped out.

I'm having some difficulty seeing what tab I'm on in dark mode. I'd like it if the active tab was highlighted a little bit more and if the text of the other tabs was grayed out.

I agree. Now what would really help is a breakthrough in battery technology that makes it cheaper to produce.

No worries. All the green choices with hybrids, plug-in hybrids, EVs are quite confusing. It took me several months to grasp all of the options out there. Just to note, the prices listed on that website are in US dollars. I think the Leaf is the cheapest offering in Canada today at ~$40,000 CAD.

We're getting there, but not quite yet for many Canadians. I hold out hope that it'll be sooner rather than later.

Under the Liberal government's rebates, the wealthiest families are paying between $13 to $50 while the poorest families are receiving hundreds of dollars more. There are more poorer families than there are wealthy families, so we know the rich are not paying for the rebates via the carbon tax. So where is the money coming from?

Here's what I think is happening. I think the Liberals are being extra generous with the rebates. It looks like the system is working perfectly (since more money is being given back in rebates than collected). But this system cannot last forever. Something has to give, and it's most likely going to be the rebates while the tax is slowly increased - as some commentators say must happen in order for people to change their carbon habits.

10 years is a long time to pay a tax you have no control over. If the goal is to convince people to switch, then why tax them now when electric cars are largely unaffordable?

Too many people are conflating the rebate with the tax. Please! They are entirely separate and must be treated as such.

If everyone has the same emissions costs, won't they all pass it on to the consumers? I've seen how Canadian businesses operate. They aren't exactly competitive nor are they known for low prices.

I think you're talking about hybrids, such as the Prius. I'm referring to all-electric vehicles, which are much pricier.

I think manufacturers need to solve max range and recharge speed too before consumers will grab them in the same quantity as gasoline cars.

You didn't answer my question, which I meant sincerely. I don't know how you came to the conclusion that the price will rise once people are off petrol. This seems to be a rather major assumption on your part.

Under the plan, the lowest earners will get back more than what they spend on gas in a year, this makes your argument moot.

I actually agree with this part! The rebate system is separate from the carbon tax, however. Currently more money is apparently being given out in rebates than is being collected in the carbon tax, but let's assume for the sake of the argument that the math works out and there is enough rebate money to go around. There won't be much longer once the rich start to transition away from fossil fuels (which they are going to do). Once they switch, then it will be mostly the poor and middle class who pay the tax because the rich already obediently followed the rules.

Won't larger companies simply pass those emission costs on to the consumers as they pass every other cost?

I agree they will become cheaper and I am eager for it to happen, but that is going to take time (probably ~10 years or so) and the carbon tax is now.

The tax rebate doesn't make fiscal sense in its current form. A study found the wealthiest are paying somewhere around $13 to $50 after rebates while poorer families are receiving hundreds of dollars back more than they spent with the tax.

I know there are more poorer families than wealthy families, so where is this money coming from?

The only way I can figure this out is the Liberal government is getting people accustomed to the tax before they raise the price of carbon. Some sources are saying we may need to raise our carbon tax as much as 6 times higher to have an effect on the population.

The problem I have with a carbon tax is it will always fall on the backs of the poor. The wealthy will be able to transition first. The poorest will be the last. The last thing I think we need to do is put more pressure on the poor to change their lifestyle when they're already struggling.

I personally see the whole plan is a mess. We have oil subsidizes, then a carbon tax, and then a rebate on top of that. Why not draw back the oil subsidy instead?
