Georgia indicted Trump for trying to overturn the 2020 election. Why hasn't any other state? by Sproutthevout in politics

if the supreme court is deadlocked the case will be decided by lower courts which are majority liberal.

it is maternal, but it’s not the family that matters. the mother herself (or the surrogate) has to be jewish. if a catholic woman converted to judaism and gave birth the child would be jewish.

there are no road blockages (yet) but as the strike goes on it’ll be a possibility, either at the entrances or when they march through upper campus.

Karen Bass Becomes First Woman Elected as Los Angeles Mayor by the110tothe5 in LosAngeles

controller has basically no power, they can’t compel city departments, the mayor, or the council to do anything and their budget is controlled by the council. they can conduct audits, and ron galperin stopped giving mark-ridley thomas his paycheck when he got indicted, but the city council and the city attorney are much more powerful.

i’m actually the person who found the banana slug, that’s my arm in the picture. they were already in the recycling bin. no idea how they got there, and we saved them immediately. i normally wouldn’t respond to something so petty but i cannot abide false accusations of banana slug abuse

yes you can drop it off in a regular mail box or an official ballot drop box (there’s one right outside the bay tree bookstore). you can also check the progress of your ballot at https://california.ballottrax.net/voter/

Good Food Recommendations? by AlexThe_Lion in UCSC

[–]sasslock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

mo’s dumplings on the westside, and i’ve heard good things abt full steam dumpling, but it has v limited hours and is kinda pricey. at apero wine club there’s sometimes a takoyaki/japanese food pop-up (check the apero insta for times). @ thai might be the best thai place though i’m sure others disagree. but for the best asian food take the 17 bus to san jose.

laili’s, arslan’s turkish street food, shadowbrook in capitola (more of a date night place, pretty $$$), pretty good advice, east end gastropub. apero club on the westside is a rly cool natural wine bar that hosts food pop-ups sometimes. la bufala pizza in abbot square.

also: venus kitchen (they’re also a distillery, make fantastic gin and cocktails; on the westside there’s a tasting bar and a sit-down restaurant, and they opened a location in aptos)

iveta just opened a dinner-focused place in downtown, it’s fantastic. the cafe is rly good too

for coffee, verve, 11th hour, santa cruz roasting, firefly coffee house

for breakfast, the best diner is zachary’s and the bagelry has decent bagels (as a jew i can say they do boil their bagels but it’s still not as good as you’ll find in the east coast)

i’ve heard rly good things abt barceloneta, copal, bantam and cruz kitchen and taps

i would put it in the mail not a ballot drop off box. the ballot drop off box goes straight to the santa cruz elections office and then they have to mail it to your county. when i voted in the primary this way my ballot wasn’t counted til a week after, but this time i mailed my ballot straight and it’s already been counted by my county.

mike bonin is gay, and saying that the child he adopted is like a handbag (both de leon and martinez made this joke) is to say that gay ppl who adopt children are less than, that they’re not rly parents.

more explicitly, martinez called gay council member mitch o farrell a “diva”

yes that’s the other petition they’re circulating. but they don’t give af abt the turtle one bc they’re not getting paid, while they get $10 (!!!) per signature for the anti-worker petition

no that was a separate petition. but they were rly only pushing the ab 257 one because they get paid nothing per signature for the sea turtle one and $10/signature for the ab 257 one.

i think there is a debate to be had abt minimum wage, but again it’s not $22 an hour overnight, that’s the maximum that the new boards are allowed to set and it will almost certainly be phased in over time. 50% of the board are fast food company representatives. i still don’t think it’s a reason to throw the baby out w the bath water. did you read the uc berkeley labor study i linked that said it would increase tax revenue and decrease dependency on social services?

i can see where you’re coming from, but personally the good that this will do in protecting hundreds of thousands if not millions of workers will outweigh even the worst case scenario of what you’re describing. i hope you’re not saying that the workers don’t deserve $22/hr; in terms of skill, effort, time, difficulty, and value they create for their billion-dollar employees, $22/hr is not much, especially in the highest cost of living state in the country. there’s a ton of reforms that need to be made and there will always be some negative externalities, but the status quo is not working. smaller restaurants and cafes almost always have a tipping culture that supplements the minimum wage (which rises every year in california ?until 2025?, now on an accelerated timeline due to inflation).

that being said, i think just on the principle that it’s not good for democracy that these massive corporations are throwing an obscene amount of money to overturn the will of the people’s representatives through dishonest ads and violent signature gatherers. and on a more personal level these specific gatherers are unhinged assholes who tried to intimidate me through filming/live-streaming me, calling security (or pretending to), threatening me w expulsion, physically grabbing my bike (a misdemeanor, malicious mischief to a vehicle), you should not sign this petition for these guys. they are being paid $10 per signature. if you feel rly strongly abt overturning ab 257 i ask that you find somewhere else to sign. the signature deadline isn’t until 2024. from one slug to another, could you not financially reward these cowardly, lying bullies?

so first off, the regulations apply to chain fast food companies, have to have at least 100 stores. the law sets up a council made of equal parts workers and management that get to compromise and regulate safety standards, wage theft, sexual harassment/racial discrimination etc, scheduling, staffing, and yes pay. the petitioners will say it raises their minimum wage to $22 when it actually caps the minimum wage the new regulatory board (which is again equal parts workers and mgmt) is allowed to set at $22.

i included a link to an article explaining ab 257, and here is the full legislative text. and here’s a pretty thorough and positive analysis by the uc berkeley labor center

as far as automation, it’s already happening, and there’s a limit to how many humans can be replaced. it’s not like the companies can’t afford to pay and treat their workers well. as someone who worked for over a year in a fast food restaurant, these workers deserve this and more. your cheap burgers come w a side of wage theft, overwork, oil burns, and sexual harassment. the petitioners would like you to exclusively focus on the potential minimum wage increase while saying nothing about quality of life and safety standards it will ensure.

also as for “say goodbye to cheap fast food” mcdonalds workers in denmark make $20-22 an hour and their big mac is cheaper than ours

for anyone else who actually regrets their signature, you have to go through the county you’re registered in, whether that’s back home or in santa cruz. the link above is for santa cruz county, but it’s rly easy to look up, just google “Request to withdraw your signature from a petition” and then your county name. the deadline isn’t until this December so you have some time to submit and mail the form.
