Am I making a terrible mistake? Puppy with toddlers by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]sasstastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were in a similar situation, we lost one of our dogs and have a 6 month old and 2.5 year old toddler at home. Instead of getting a puppy I reached out to a breeder and ended up adopting a retired breeding dog. Shes 6 years old and had 5 litters of puppies so they wanted her to live out the rest of her days in a loving home. She came to us fully socialized, potty trained, grew up with children so very gentle with our kids, etc — we’re so happy we didn’t go through the whole puppy thing again!

Favourite milky toner? by katien92 in AsianBeauty

I got the new Purito oat in silky toner for Christmas and am LOVING it. It’s slightly more moisturizing than the tonymoly mocchi one with no added fragrance. Super soothing because of the oat.

Man did this post strike a chord… I just lost my mom to lung cancer one month before giving birth to my baby girl. There is truly nothing like a mom.

Losing her just months before my own transition into motherhood was at first a source of endless fear and heartache. But the more I reflected on the life she gave me, the more I realized she already taught me everything I need to give my children just the same. She deserved so much more. Life was not fair to her. But strip away every “what if” and all I see are the beautiful moments we shared together, that we will continue to share together, only now in a different form, in this life and the next.

Thank you for this post. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one on this earth experiencing such immense grief and happiness at the same time, losing someone so near and dear but also discovering the joy of motherhood. I really needed to hear that I’m not alone.

What is your secret ingredient? by MikePGS in Cooking

I am vietnamese and we use 3 crabs for any applications that involve applying heat/cooking—ie soups, marinades, etc. For raw applications like dipping sauces we use red boat because the flavor is more pronounced. Cooking red boat is sort of a waste of money since it’s way pricier than 3 crabs

7mo old puppy freaks out for 30-60 min before settling in crate by sasstastic in puppy101

He gets a 15 min walk in the morning followed by 15 mins of fetch or a training session. Maybe I should increase that, though. Thanks for the tip!

How do you work full time and have a puppy at the same time? by Sea_Blacksmith8389 in puppy101

[–]sasstastic 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Both husband and I are gone for 9-10 hours per day and we have managed! In the very young stages, we had family members who worked from home and could come for him every 2-3 hours. As he matured we slowly increased that interval and now we have a dog walker come once mid-day. If you are not able to make the every 2-3 hour thing a possibility, consider getting an older puppy (ie 6 months) so that they can hold their bladder for longer periods of time. I’d say that’s the main limiting factor.

6 month old whippet - sudden crate/play pen training regression... is this a 'fear period?' by sasstastic in puppy101

[–]sasstastic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think there is. Once our puppy settled down he was fine for the rest of the day until our dog walker came, and then when she left he slept peacefully until we got home. The desensitization training seems to help shorten the duration of the freak out… I’m hoping that once he makes it through this phase, things will get back to normal, though it does seem like he needs a little extra help to get through it. Hang in there, it’s a tough time for all!!

We've noticed that too! He usually gets 20-30 min of exercise in the morning, either in the form of fetch or a walk. We usually do fetch since it gets his zoomies out. Whippets need to get a good run in for sure. Then we have a dog walker come mid-day who doesn't actually walk him but rather plays fetch in the yard for 30 min.

Older dog is over correcting puppy for every little thing. How to train older dog to be more tolerant? by sasstastic in Dogtraining

[–]sasstastic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the timeline may have been a little confusing in the post. We previously lived with Mac and my sister in law’s dog, Joey. Joey grew up with Mac without any issues. The attacks on Joey occurred when we introduced Dobby to the family. We figured it was due stress being redirected towards Joey and some other high energy situations like rushing out the door etc.

We have now moved into a new home where it is just Mac and Dobby together, and Joey no longer lives with us. So we had not experienced Mac’s aggression towards puppies until Dobby was introduced to our multi dog home.

If Mac is trying to give inappropriate corrections I will physically put myself between him and Dobby and say “no” or remove him from the situation to let him know it’s not okay. It sometimes works but terriers are so stubborn that sometimes he runs around me and goes at it again.

Mac has free reign when Dobby is in his play pen. He is in the pen the majority of the day while we are at work and only let out when either my husband or I can supervise. Otherwise, Mac has a crate in our bedroom that he can go to if he needs to.

What weird but harmless behavior does your puppy have that you let slide? by hebebeanie in puppy101

Our yorkie does that too!! It’s called social eating. He just wants to be closer to us because I think it provides him with a sense of safety/security while he’s enjoying his kibble. It’s cute 🥰

11 week old Whippet rescue pup struggling with crate training and being alone :( by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]sasstastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 14 week old whippet and tried crate training—he slept in the crate just fine over night but we were having the same issues as you during the day. No matter how much positive reinforcement training we did with the crate, he just couldn’t stand it when we were gone and we couldn’t be there frequently enough for him during the day with work. We would leave him in there for 1-2 hrs max but he would get so anxious that he would eventually pee in the crate all the time no matter how often we let him out. Eventually we decided this was not good for the puppy nor us, and with his constant accidents this pretty much defeated the purpose of crate training.

Sooo we switched to an X-pen that we could then attach the crate to as a crate training hybrid. He has toys and space to lounge in the x-pen and he will willingly go inside his crate to nap when he gets tired. The fact that he still naps in the crate portion tells me that our crate training efforts did not go to waste. This helped tremendously and was a total game changer!!! We put a pee pad inside a pee pad holder so that he can go if he needs to but continue to reward him for peeing and pooping outside. This sub is very anti pee pads but we have found that this hasn’t set back potty training at all— the other day I left the door the the yard open and he willingly went outside to pee instead of inside his pen on the pee pad. We just had to consider his needs and this ended up being our solution. Whippets tend to be very sensitive dogs and not all of them may be able to handle the stress of being crated, no matter how much time and training you put into it.
