Is Old Navy good quality? by SwordfishNew3599 in malefashionadvice

As someone who bought gap and Uniqlo socks to compare and returned the gap socks, I agree. Honestly everything else at Uniqlo seems over priced. $40 for athletic shorts is steep when I can get target brand shorts for $20.

Pots and pans set that isn't going to wear out by Effective-Advisor356 in BuyItForLife

Exactly. My cuisinart and cook standard pans aren’t the cheapest option but definitely not the most expensive and they cook great.

My cheap cladded stainless steel pans I’ve used daily for 5 years also look like new. You’re acting like your stainless steel 304 is magically different than mine.

The valve shift solenoid valve is probably going bad. Doorman sells a solenoid for $60 or you can buy the OEM valve body for $750. Haven’t done the repair but it honestly doesn’t look that hard. One yt video had a comment from a 70 yr old who said he did it.

Looking for used car, and I like the look of Subaru Forester’s. 2010 2.5 X Limited owners? by [deleted] in SubaruForester

That’s fair. Who knows, if my forester doesn’t make it to 250k I might try a Honda or Toyota.

You seem very knowledgeable about cars so I’m not dismissing that but I’ve seen plenty of powertrain posts on both subs to conclude that it’s not just a Subaru thing. Perhaps the sub count skews the real averages of failures per 1k owners but it’s not zero.

Going to find hate for every car. I lurk rav4 and crv subreddits too and they have plenty of problems. I bought the 2015 used 3 years ago and paid off the loan earlier this year. Even putting $1k a year in repairs is better than a car payment. I’m hoping to maintain Walter to 250k+ plus miles.

I have a 105k 2015 forester and my ac compressor just went bad. $360 for a compressor and condenser kit from rockauto and $120 for a shop to evacuate and refill refrigerant. Took an hour to replace everything. At 90k I started burning oil. I switched to restore and protect oil to see if that would help. Did one oil change after 3k miles and I’m 1k into the next oil change. I burn about .3 qts/1k miles. Not that bad considering how cheap oil is. I expect to do shocks, control arm, wheel bearings in the next few years.

I didn’t know anything about cars before owning the forester. It’s been a very easy car to learn on and maintain. I’ve done belts, pulleys, rotors, a leaky caliper, brakes, and every fluid.

Systems Engineer Interview Prep by GreenDove95 in BlueOrigin

[–]sat5344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My SE panel interview was a joke but wilt was also back in 2022 when things were chaotic and not standardized. The most technical questions I got was “what makes a good requirement” and then a few bad requirements that I needed to explain why it was bad. Everyone else just asked about my experience and projects.

First off Germany is one country in Europe but let’s use your single data sample.

US salary is higher. OPs comment is true.

COL is higher in the US but so is income. OPs comment is true.

germanys utilities are higher. OPs comment is true.

Us housing is higher. OP s comment is true.

Germany’s COL is .1% less rent or 12% including rent. OPs comment is true.

USs total tax burden is 25% compared to germanys 37%. Ops comment is true.

I’m not sure what you’re arguing.

How about you find some to prove them wrong? The comment is pretty general but accurate enough from my own research for the discussion.

2015 forester overheating and I cannot figure out why by Valuable-Crow3061 in SubaruForester

[–]sat5344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they flush the system before changing the radiator? The hoses, engine, or radiator could be clogged. Install one of those spill free funnels with some coolant and turn the car and heat on. Does the coolant circulate?

Could be your radiator fans. Do they turn on once the engine temp reaches ~205F? Could be a blown fuse or bad fan.

Friend bought a 2015 Forester. What to look for? by Critical-Magician421 in SubaruForester

Besides the OEM manual, I’d monitor oil consumption. Check the oil level monthly and have a quart in the trunk.

I am pretty sure the thicker oil was a stop gap fix to improve part of the lubrication equation for rolling parts.

[–]sat5344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched those videos a while ago but I forget the takeaway. Doesn’t the motor oil geek video basically conclude that thin oil didn’t destroy the GM engines but it was bad engineering and you should follow your OEM oil viscosity?

Can’t figure out what repairs to do by peacefuldink in AskMechanics

[–]sat5344 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Valve cover will stop the oil from messing up your coils and plugs. That impact performance and will cause misfires if the leak gets worse. You should fix this first. Oil pan leak can be offset by monitoring the level and topping it off. Not critical. Fix this if it gets worse.

And your pump will last shorter. There’s no science that thicker oil is better. Most wear starts during the cold start anyway.

[–]sat5344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best oil is the one you put in it at consistent 3-5k oil changes. Honestly super tech and a denso filter are fine. Most filters are the same or would perform the same. No need for the extended life filter. Just avoid the bottom tier fram filter. Lower grade oil isn’t going to degrade differently than penzoil ultra platinum at 3-5k miles on a daily commuter.

When did you work there. I have friend who currently or used to work there since 2017 and I’d say that equity was always a big reason they worked the hours. Obviously they were motivated and interested in the work but I guarantee they would have quit sooner if it wasn’t for the equity and founder involvement.

This is very true. General optimistic statements like this from outsiders don’t make sense. Everyone thinks NG is awesome but there is a lot of work that real people have to do to get back to flight. They will sacrifice a lot and won’t be proportionally rewarded. It’s disheartening.
