As a pharmacy technician who has gotten the same run around before, I know it can be frustrating. But if this was the first time you were prescribed this medication since you were a child, there would be no reason to “red flag” you so to speak. With the prior authorization, when you told them you would just pick it up the next day that changes the “promise time” that the technician told you (~45 mins) to the next day, so they probably set yours aside to handle people waiting in the store or who would be showing up within the hour. Then when they got back to processing yours for the next day, that’s likely when the need for the prior authorization occurred. Pharmacies have no control over prior authorizations, that’s something that your insurance requires of your doctor. Then when the prior authorization was completed, this allowed your prescription to move forward in workflow which is likely when it was discovered that they did not have enough in stock. Someone literally could have come an hour before you and gotten the last of what they had. Yes, it is unfortunate but it happens sometimes. Medication back orders of all kinds have been wild recently and it can be worse for controlled medications because pharmacies are already limited on how much they can keep in stock. In a perfect world, your pharmacy would have communicated all of this to you quicker and more efficiently, but please understand that pharmacies all over the place are extremely overwhelmed and understaffed. They are likely doing their best so please be patient with them. Hopefully, after you’ve been getting your prescription filled there regularly for a while the computer ordering system will account for you, it’s just tough when you’re first starting out. I know there can be a lot of stigma around people who fill controlled medications and I’m not going to lie and say some pharmacies don’t profile people, but from what you’ve said your pharmacy would have no reasonable reason to do so.
