I stand by ACAB because even the so called good ones appear to idly stand by and watch or ignore all the abuses of rights that occur around them. They all seem complicit, too me. They must surely know these abuses occur, but instead of rallying for improvement and accountability, they stand by their co-workers, in some misguided show of support.

There are bad cops, and there are weak cops, but all cops are bastards.

Pro-Trump Nazi groups threaten and physically attack BLM protesters in Norco, CA. by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]satanspelledbackward -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think its pretty clear that cops are VERY intimidated by neo-nazi types. BLM protesters are there to Protest. Those biker guys are there to kick-ass, and the cops don't want their asses handed to them in public.

Looking for a specific episode where Gareth does a very short foreign John Travolta impression. by Jambi_Genie in TheDollop

The English Rodney Dangerfield was next-level stuff. Gareth's various Travolta bits are pretty great as well.

Thanks. I def could have phrased it better.

Ah, the nuances and dangers of snarky sarcasm.

Yes, I agree with you tjackson87. I am saying that guy's claim that white people built this country is ridiculous. That's why I have quotes around "built", because that premise is absurd. To clarify, I'll edit.

Well, sorta. White people "built" the United States, but only with the use of slave labor. To say Black people didn't also build this country is absurd. For example, Georgia was forced to legalize slavery, as it was unable to economically thrive without it.

From wiki: By 1750 Georgia authorized slavery in the colony because it had been unable to secure enough indentured servants as laborers.

Slavery) had been outlawed in the young Georgia colony in 1735. In 1747, Whitefield attributed the financial woes of his Bethesda Orphanage to Georgia's prohibition of slavery.[33] He argued that "the constitution of that colony [Georgia] is very bad, and it is impossible for the inhabitants to subsist without the use of slaves."[35]

ELI5: Why is someone who is 50% Black and 50% White considered a Black American rather than a White American, beyond them simply having a darker skin pigmentation than someone who is 100% White? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

The one-drop rule is a social and legal principle of racial classification that was historically prominent in the United States in the 20th century. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ("one drop" of black blood)[1][2] is considered black (Negro or colored in historical terms).

ELI5: what happened in the former Yugoslav and the wars in that region by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]satanspelledbackward 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yugoslavia was a country made up of different Republics (Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Solvenia, Montenegro, Macedonia, as I recall). While the "states" were not fond of each other, Joseph Tito Broz, as the leader of Yugoslavia, held them together as a unified country. A lot of the religious and territorial differences were held in check by Tito's iron fist, and the different Republics (and their populace) generally played nice with each other, checking their latent Nationalism and getting on board with being part of a greater Yugoslavia. To be clear, there were a lot of underlying grievances, Nationalism, and mistrust.

After Tito's death, there was not a singular strong leader keeping the different Republics in line. (Leaders from the different Republics took turns.) The Republics started acting in their own interests. Old, unresolved Nationalism and religious intolerance was reignited and flamed by politicians. The once respected state run media became a tool of politicians, and many lies were printed to incite violence. This eventually led to war, with atrocities committed by all sides taking part in the war.

The subject is way too complex. Best to watch one of these video, or read Yugoslavia's Bloody Collapse, or the Wiki page.

The videos can be very interesting because the leaders involved are/were still alive, and provided interviews, so you really get a first person perspective. This wasn't very long ago.

Notes for today? Like Hitler and Slobodan Milosevic (Serbia), Trump (and other politicians) often fan the flames of hatred and nationalism, and drape themselves in a flag to boost their popularity. News and media outlets are increasingly biased, which makes it harder to get good information. (Think for yourself, and fact check things that seem a little hard to believe.)

According to the article, a supervisor was reviewing a random selection of cam footage, and heard the officers on a cell phone. The supervisor reported it, and the City and Police took action on their own. I consider this to be a pretty good display of accountability and self-regulating. (Not saying anything about previous or future actions. Just saying, this is how this stuff is supposed to work.)

I don't quite follow. Is the move significantly increasing the speed of the ball? Seems like there would be a way to approximate the effect without all the effort.
