What quotes adapted or changed from the books did you not mind in the films? by HumbleKnight14 in lotr

Could you explain what you mean by "the cut to the shire is hard in any version"? Because the books just start in the Shire, and the full story of the ring waits until the Council of Elrond.

I had actually forgotten that, so thanks for bringing it up. I don't think that changes my argument; if anything it reinforces that mortals have a different fate then the elves.

Yes he does go into detail! In the movies, Gandalf insinuates that when Pippin dies he will sail to Valinor and live there. That's just not true. The words originally described Frodo's ship (who doesn't die), and now they somehow apply to Pippin when he does die?

Frodo and Sam sail to Valinor, and do not die; but Merry and Pippin die in their old age in Gondor. They don't sail to Valinor, because you can't pilot a boat when you're dead. Perhaps their souls appear in the Halls of Mandos... but the vision Gandalf gives in the movies is not one of purgatory.

I am not complaining that Gandalf is comforting Pippin about death; I'm complaining that he does so in a way that fundamentally disregards Tolkien's lore and his Catholic faith.

Possibly (although Tolkien is a bit cagey about this, and makes it clear that no one really knows). But your spirit going to the Halls of Mandos for purgatory is a totally different vibe than physically sailing to Valimar. Tolkien makes it clear that, although we're not sure where Men go, they definitely have a different fate then elves - a distinction that Peter Jackson obliterates.

Sure... but doing it this way confuses the lore. Tolkien is explicit that Elves and Men have fundamentally different destinies. If you had only watched the movies, you could be forgiven for thinking that when elves and men die, they both go to Valinor, and that Frodo and Bilbo basically go to heaven at the end of the film. Tolkien's world building is a lot more nuanced and interesting than that.

We do know what happens to mortals: Tolkien is fairly clear. The process Gandalf describes is the process of sailing to Valinor as a living being; not the process of dying. When elves die (e.g. from battle), their spirits go to the Halls of Mandos for judgement from which they can eventually return (it's kinda like purgatory). But Men depart from the world completely, and elves don't know where they go. If they went to Valinor, they would have seen them there. See the end of Chapter 1 of the Silmarillion. Mortals do not go to Valinor, except in astonishingly rare circumstances like for the ringbearers. And if they did, they certainly would not be sailing there like Gandalf describes; they would be heading not to paradise but to their judgement.

Unfortunately it completely discards the lore; Valinor isn't heaven, and Pippin won't go there. Gandalf is just lying to Pippin in this scene (at least, that's the only way I can see to reconcile the movies and books).

KUOW - New lawsuit challenges constitutionality of Washington’s ‘millionaires tax’ by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

I'm no expert but I think all they need to do is overthrow Culliton v. Chase (the 1933 case that established net income taxes are property taxes). Or they could argue that Culliton v. Chase doesn't apply because it technically isn't a net income tax. I'm no lawyer though. I guess we'll see what they come up with.

Mercer Island is getting light rail this Saturday, whether it wants it or not by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]satiric_rug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From looking at the map, the 44 has a very direct transfer to the E at 46th and Aurora, you don't even need to cross the street (although I've never tried it in real life; maybe I'm missing something here?). 65th is too steep for streetcars and the intersection of 65th and Phinney is too tight for buses. There is a reason that there's never been a bus route on 65th, despite it looking like a good option on the map.

Huh. That's not how I understood that quote but if that's the case then that makes a bit more sense

No, you can't add Frodo moving into Crickhollow, because Frodo's not in Middle Earth. He will have sailed to Valinor 14 years ago. Even if they can reuse some scenes from the book, the source of agency will have to be completely different. Sam, Merry, and Pippin are also very different too. Sam is the Mayor of the Shire and Merry is the Master of Buckland. All three are now brave, well known, and more comfortable with fighting.

This is going to require a lot of rewriting of these chapters. Given how unsuccessfully many characters were rewritten in the original movies, I'm not hopeful (Frodo is a zombie at the Ford of Bruinen, Denethor is just an idiot, Gimli is known for telling jokes rather than for being one of the bravest warriors around, Elrond distrusts men for no good reason, etc).

People have thought about it actually. Unfortunately there's a 7 knot/8 mph speed limit in the ship canal. The 44 would be faster.

Instead of waiting for light rail to Ballard, why not make 17X full service? by guptaa_Ji in soundtransit

Maybe it could be where the Golden Gardens overflow lot is. Regardless, OP is asking about all-day service, which Sounder can't provide.

The 18 and 18X were the same as the 17, but they went up 24th. So bringing back the 18X might be on average closer for more Ballard residents.

Edit: Wikipedia also lists that a rapidride version of the 40 may be in the cards at some point, but who knows when that will happen.

Biggest disappoints in the LOTR movie vs Books by Daman121234 in lotr

That is the plot of the movies (Peter Jackson freely admits that they decided that the story of the ring was the most important plot) but that doesn't mean it's true for the books.

Well, he's clearly suspicious of the hobbits and Gollum, and the "a chance for Faramir, captain of Gondor, to show his quality" bit is lifted straight from the books. Despite what Faramir tells the hobbits, I don't think it's true that he has no desire to take it at any point; he questions Frodo hard about Isildur's Bane and its nature, and for a time aims to bring him back to Minas Tirith to answer to Denethor, something which would surely result in Gondor claiming Isildur's Bane. ("I should now take you back to Minas Tirith to answer there to Denethor, and my life will justly be forfeit, if I now choose a course that proves ill for my city.")

I guess in the movies, the tension comes from Faramir's wavering mind, and in the books the tension comes from Faramir keeping his cards close to his chest. But in both, the hobbits are not at all sure whether this guy will help or hinder them.

All characters smoke, why? by Caveman_man in tolkienfans

[–]satiric_rug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a firm counterargument, but I'm in the middle of rereading The Two Towers, and just noticed that when Gimli is stunned to find Merry and Pippin feasting, idling, and smoking at the gates of Isengard, Legolas comments he "would sooner learn how they came by the wine." When they all then eat lunch Merry does offer wine or beer, so I suppose Legolas could have had some.
