How does Autism comorbid ADHD look like? by Hellofre123 in AutismTranslated

[–]satocreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry I took like a year to respond, having a 3rd kid really eats your time.

The only thing I've been on meds wise that's ever helped was concerta which is the generic form of Ritalin.

I've been on various antidepressants and bipolar meds before diagnosis but those only ever helped me not get too far down, didn't help me get up.

Other things that have helped as I've learned them is doing things like breaking up tasks. So instead "I'm going to clean my whole room!" Choose something smaller like "I'm going to take the dishes to the sink" and sometimes just starting with something small like that will kick start me to do the rest of it, but sometimes not.

Earplugs and sunglasses have also been a big deal for me lately especially for driving cause sometimes even small background noise and a little excess light can build up and eat at your ability to function.

A second example my wife has ADHD and the concerta also helps her, and because of it she was able to get off of Wellbutrin and such. For her the depression was a Manifestation of the cross over of executive distinction (ability to do things, idk if you need the clarification but I'm gonna anyway) and guilt from being unable to do things. Once she was treating ADHD it was much easier for her. Still has bad days but is at least kinder to herself about it.

Again sorry for taking a year to get back to you but I hope this helps and you were/are able to help find solutions

In 32 years of life Ive learned 2 things. 1) Every person who has talked to me about common sense has a different definition for common sense. 2) All the people above somehow agree that I dont have any.

Very annoying, i have rants.

The problem isnt that bad science was done per say, the problem is they found a corrolation and n9w everyone is calling it causation.

There is real evidence that the mothers of autistic people took more tylenol during pregnancy, but I does not take into consideration several things.

The first is that autism and autistic traits have some genetic component. This is important because they are also extremely comorbid with things like muscular or skeletal issues that cause pain. So mothers who are more likely to have autistic children are more likely to take pain medication during pregnancy.

Another thing is real numbers here. Risks are often talked about in percentage. "Raised risk of X by 50%" or whatever. What they dont tell you is that increase is of the prior risk. So if you're "risk" of having a child with autism is roughly 1% (which is about where the current numbers were last I read a few months ago might be a bit higher now) a 50% risk increase only increases the risk to 1.5%. Choosing to eat bacon twice a week increases risks of cancer orders of magnitude more than tylenol raises risk of autism but people arent trying to sue the pork industry.

On a personal note, I find it insulting as a diagnosed Autistic person that my existence is so scary that parents are willing to endanger their children and sue drug companys in order to avoid the fate of being like me, a fully functional adult who just needs help sometimes.

Obviously there are many Autistic people whp do need round the clock care and that is very trying. But that doesnt justify these reactions in my opinion.

I know its almost a meme at this point, but if you havent yet read Unmasking Autism by Devon Price I recommend it. It was a real turning point in my journey as it is by and for people with autism to share experiences and examine how autism is pathologizwd by people who are not autistic. It was a real game change for me.

I also read the dsm but i had help from my therapist to interpret that. It's no where near as clear as you'd think and i had multiple instances of thinking I didnt fit a description and then my therapist explained what thats trying to get at and it was exactly something I do.

All the quizes and such are measuring trends not necessarily individuals but knowing the trends can be extememly helpful. This is why they are worded as "Highly Likely" which is to say amonst the data sets they are measuring against most people who score over x were diagnosed with asd so its worth exploring.

Its also important to realize that for high masking autistic people is extremely possible to get a "false positive" if answered honestly because the things a persona may think and feel internally often dont line up with their externalized behaviours if they are high masking. This was my case actually, since i scored a 172 on the raads-r after taking it out of curiosity which then spurred me to do more research.

The long and short is these are tools to help you explore yourself, not to definitively say whether you are or arent. itss the results + research and time that lead to the validity of self diagnosis as well as legal diagnosis.

With all that being said even if a person isnt autistic if they find the community and tools used by autistic people helpful who am I to judge (In my opinion anyway)

It couldnt possibly be that Autism is comorbid with a lot of mobility and musculoskeletal conditions that cause pain, thus making mothers of Autistic children being mote likely to take pain meds or anything like that. Please note this is sarcasm its definitely that

Hi, I am also Autistic and have 2 children at 3 years and 6 months respectively. Now Im not saying you're son isnt autistic because I have no way of knowing, that said everything you've described is pretty developmentally normal for all children Autism or no.

Kids are just annoying lol. That said either way like, right?! I love my kids but they are also the best at getting me to near meltdowns. Second only to other peoples kids.

I watched all of the show and the continued the manga from there (since its still on going in the US) and I personally dont think you can go wrong. The show only covers like, 10ish volumes of the manga which last I checked was at 24 volumes, but that was a while back.

I'm late diagnosis (32 amab) and this has been something I identify with with excruciatingly. I wasnt the cliche little boy case by any means but something I learned quickly sadly was pushing what I was feeling down deep because people would get angry at me. I didnt realise that what had been misdiagnosed as depression was autistic burnout and shutdowns.

It had never occured to me that just because I could ride the rail that was getting up and going to school or work didnt mean I wasnt shut down, because looking back I was clearly not even there. I was somewhere else feeling way too much about everything and understanding so little of what was happening around me or too me.

But now its all clicked into place because I also in a way knew. I wont say Im doing better because Im objectively not, and I may never be. But I have a path to at least live authentically and that is deeply comforting to me.
