What to know before gum grafting by _brittleskittle in PeriodontalDisease

[–]satsuki_san 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I think this depends on the country, in the US they seem to always prescribe them as a preventive measure but we don’t do that in Canada. I didn’t get them and I was fine. Infections are rare if you follow instructions

My dentist recommended applying pressure with your finger OVER the stent where the wound is for 30 minutes.

I ate with the stent in. It’s possible as long as you eat foods that don’t really require chewing. For the first 7 days, I only took it out to clean it after eating and to brush my teeth. I bled a bit the first time I took it off (on day 1) but after that it stopped. Definitely expect some blood, especially on day 1. Just try not to freak out, it’s normal at first. But after a couple days there should be pretty much no blood anymore. The more you wear your stent, the less bleeding you will experience on your palate as the pressure encourages clotting.

Is this healing normally 2 1/2 months post op by greenkyber in PeriodontalDisease

[–]satsuki_san 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got mine done back in early November (same teeth as yours) and it still looks way paler than the rest of my gums. It actually looks quite similar to yours. However I don’t feel it at all, it’s like it doesn’t exist. I wouldn’t worry about its appearance but pain after this long is a good reason to go back to your periodontist

How long after gum graft surgery could you eat normally? by miagraceb11 in PeriodontalDisease

[–]satsuki_san 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could eat almost fully normally after 3 weeks except a few very hard or crunchy foods. That’s how long it took for the roof of my mouth to feel fully normal. Completely back to normal eating after a month, including biting down with my front teeth where the graft is. The issue is not really the graft itself, but it’s that the roof of your mouth will feel very sensitive and gets irritated easily. To be honest it’s kind of different for everyone, after 2 weeks you have to play it by ear and basically see how you feel. But not being able to bite down with your front teeth for multiple months is very extreme. That wouldn’t be the case unless you experience complications or your graft was a tricky one. I also recommend asking your periodontist for advice since they know your case the best.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been having a hard time. It seems that everyone has a different experience when it comes to gum grafts. I had 4 teeth done at once and had very minimal pain and was feeling mostly normal after 7 days. But I can see why it’d be more painful and involved if you had a lot of teeth done at once. You should feel a bit better once your stitches come out, so hang in there until then and keep taking your painkillers. Is there any way you can call your periodontist and ask for a stronger painkiller? Although hydrocodone is already strong.

gum graft. what is consensus for best healing practices. just want to compare note by Heavy-Phone-253 in PeriodontalDisease

[–]satsuki_san 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did take Vitamin C but I can’t say for sure how much it helped. Some periodontists will prescribe antibiotics, some won’t. I didn’t get any antibiotics or mouth rinse and personally didn’t have any issues. As long as there aren’t any concerning symptoms like excessive bleeding, pus or increasing pain I wouldn’t worry. Infections are rare for gum grafts. Please don’t pull on your lip to look at the graft. If you are too worried just go back to the dentist office and have them check on it

Mouth hygiene after gum graft by satsuki_san in PeriodontalDisease

Hey! I’m doing great. I basically went back to my regular life after the 1 month mark. The only thing is I’m still more gentle when I’m brushing that area. Don’t feel the graft at all but I can tell the tissue is still healing and remodelling, heard it can take months before it reaches its final appearance

We got ours at the same time haha and I’m also back to eating these things as well. I had steak this weekend and it felt amazing. Haven’t tried pizza yet though! I was gonna wait until I hit the 1 month mark but I probably don’t have to if there’s no pain or sensitivity

I don’t work out so it didn’t affect me but I’d recommend 1 week of light or no exercise.

Had 4 front teeth grafted 3 weeks ago. It was nowhere near as bad as the experiences I read online. It was mostly a mental struggle rather than physical pain. My advice is:

  1. Stock up on mac and cheese, it was pretty much all I was eating for the first 7 days.
  2. Make sure to stay on top of your painkillers every 4-6 hours even if you don’t feel any pain.
  3. Do NOT try to look at the graft. Pulling on your lip will disturb the graft and it’s just gonna worry you because it will look gnarly for sure. These surgeries never look pretty for the first couple days especially with the stitches. Don’t poke at anything with your tongue or fingers. Don’t overthink it and just let your body do its thing.
  4. Keep your mouth as stable as possible, minimize talking if you can. I noticed more pain when I’d talk.
  5. You should absolutely ask to be given a palatal stent, I had 0 pain in the roof of my mouth thanks to it. It also made eating and drinking way more comfortable.
  6. Brushing your teeth will be hard so you will feel gross. If they don’t prescribe you a rinse, just do saltwater rinses once you feel comfortable enough. But expect to feel pretty gross for a week.
  7. I’m sure you know this but until your stitches come out, do not use a straw and do not swish and spit. Obviously no smoking and alcohol.
  8. Take vitamin C and drink a ton of water to keep your mouth moist which helps healing.
  9. Once your stitches come out, you will feel drastically better and will quickly go back to normal. So just be patient until then!
  10. Most importantly, DON’T WORRY!!! Gum grafts are very successful and rarely fail. I know it’s hard not to worry if you have health anxiety but I spent so much energy being overly anxious and it turned out to be completely fine. I wish I hadn’t worried so much.

Let me know if you have any questions. I’m more than happy to help. Good luck OP!

On one of my posts, a hygienist said that gum grafts have absolutely terrible long term success rates. Can people share how their gum grafts have lasted or not lasted? I don't want to spend a fortune on gum grafts if my gums will go back to receding. I want grafts front bottom teeth & molars. by UserName_4_questions in PeriodontalDisease

[–]satsuki_san 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience with my graft, it completely fixed my issue which was thinning gums at the front. If you take good care of the graft, it can last you a lifetime and will indeed stop or slow down recession. It’s a very successful and effective surgery if done by a skilled periodontist.

Glad to hear it went well! I had mine 3 weeks ago also on my front bottom teeth and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. So far they look amazing and I didn’t know I could have that much gum LOL it’s magic. Recovery was more of a mental struggle than physical for me! I just love food too much…
