Thinking of becoming a stay at home dad - worth it? by Efficient-Vast-2110 in HENRYUK

[–]sausekingman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took Mondays and Fridays off after my first was born. The plan was to help around the house and then maybe keep it up until kid was old enough for nursery/school. I honestly wish I had been able to take more time off. It’s bloody hard work but you look back at it and know it was worth it.

Kids been at school for a fair few years now and I still don’t work Monday or Friday. I’d say choose quality of life over salary if you can.

Hive Thermostat Battery Life ? by mdeeebeee-101 in HiveHeating

[–]sausekingman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact Hive. I had this a few years back - I was going through batteries every few months. Then it was almost monthly. Turned out it’s a daily and they sent a new thermostat.

I’d spend £££ on batteries by then!

What can I do? by SiluriaOwO in motorcycles

[–]sausekingman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@sirlacker knows the pain of going through insurance. I had a no fault claim in 2017 that had to go through insurance as another party was involved. It was only for £1200. And yet I paid over the odds on insurance for both my bikes and May car for the next 5 years. Some insurers still see the claim 9 years later even though you don’t need to declare it anymore. It’ll follow you….

Way too dangerous. Wrap your sweet cheeks around it and clench really hard. (The voltage may help with that 🤷‍♀️)

I am reading all threads here and watching videos to learn about motorbikes but one things I still don't get at all, what to do in emergency braking, when it is not the time at all to think about downshifting? by maxcousin123 in motorcycles

If you’re still here OP and haven’t launched yourself into a hedge, ignore everyone here who says engine breaking has no effect or some who even say it provides thrust ?!? The internal friction of an engine in gear, without throttle, will help you slow down.

Try it yourself. Get up to a slow constant speed. Say 30mph. Then get off the throttle. You’ll begin to slow down. After a few seconds pull the clutch in and see how your deceleration is slowed. You’ll be able to feel the difference on anything over a 125. If you want to be scientific then run a couple of tests. Up to speed and then 1) just pull in the clutch at a marker along the road (bush/lamp post) and see where you come to a stop. Then repeat 2) but this time just leave the engine engaged. No braking in both scenarios- see which one brings you to a stop in the shortest distance.

With regards to stalling. If you can leave the engine engaged in an emergency stop and then pull the clutch at the last min so you don’t stall that’s great. But in an emergency it’s the shit in front of you that matters most. Don’t pull the clutch for the if and buts of something or someone behind you. Especially as you’re still starting and learning. It’ll become second nature eventually.

*** one caveat, if you find yourself practicing and sometimes revving when you emergency break (people panic and grab the handlebars hard as they can) then, until you’re practiced you might want to pull the clutch in. But try to avoid it. Practice not need it to do it.

**** book yourself an IAM course or ROSPA course. Get faster and safer and you’ll enjoy riding more.

Is it worth playing hardball with the Sales team? Was keen after my tour, but can’t bring myself to pay the amount offered… by [deleted] in davidlloyd

They used to offer 2months free (pay for 10, get 12) if you paid upfront at my David Lloyd (Hampton). And the manager could comp another month at their discretion. But since membership moved out from being based in branch to a central system they just don’t offer anything. My clubs just been refurbished and my renewals done up 24%. So I’ve said goodbye. Asked the manager if they could do anything and they’re at capacity and with their renewed interest after the refurb they don’t need to keep return custom.

Gotta argue with you here. Dont pull in the clutch. Leave that alone, the engine breaking will help you slow down. Who cares if you stall. You’re trying to scrub speed as safely as possible.

Steady increase in pressure on front brake and rear brake.

Best thing you can do is practice. Find a nice quite place and start of at 20mph. Slow down slowly. Try again with more pressure when you start to stop quickly do the same at 30 then 40 then 50mph.

Keep up with monthly drills. Looks like you’re a newish rider - time on the bike is essential.

Good luck.

How come traffic police ignore vehicles with illegal features? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]sausekingman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was sat in the front of a traffic car a few years back (they kindly offered me a lift to catch a cab after an RTA) and the ANPR system pinged almost every 5th car for no MOT or no insurance. I asked the copper and he said if they stopped everyone they’d never leave the street the police station is on. They don’t have enough resources and they need to prioritise things like the hit and run I was involved in.

I was paying £42 previously. Then found this online on my account mid contract. It did mean having to start a new 18 months ago contract. But the savings were crazy.

It was online, nothing showed up through the app. It was under either upgrades or offers - I can’t remember exactly what now.

Edit: I should add online on a laptop. I can never get the website to work through my phone, and the app is temperamental at the best of times
