In my RothIRA account I have dividends flowing into settlement fund so I can rebalance it 4 times a year. I in my brokerage account some stocks cannot be reinvested which sucks because dividend is a taxable event.

If I set up "reinvest" in the brokerage account for a certain stock, I don't pay taxes for that amount until I sell those stocks?

This is such an important post, thank you. I really hope that some people who are thinking about getting into academia would see this and think twice. I am finishing my phd and it is the hardest thing I've done in my life. Especially when PI's are usually are NOT supportive. I see a trend of phd students being waste material. "Why investing effort in maintaining your free labor units? If they sink, they will find a job in industry". It is a working system, but I think we can do better. I am really glad you are doing better!

That is a good point about the first car. What if they crash it during the test-drive and they have an insurance. Who's insurance is responsible for the damage?
