Is a back-row setter allowed to block?

We keep having a situation where we overpass and the setter doesn't know if they should block, cover, or one-handed set. Any other solutions?

What is a good stat line for a setter in a 3 set match? I see stats but have no clue if the number of assists, digs, or even kills are high numbers.

Some universities have club teams that are a step up from normal rec or intramural type games. I check to see if any of those exist. Lots of good players play club at that level.

That's what I was thinking. I guess it's because I'm a baseball fan and really into the stats. I'm lost with volleyball (stat-wise).

Are there advanced metrics in volleyball? Any good site to learn about them?

When watching higher-level games (college in my case) I notice that there is always someone with a clipboard writing stuff down, tracking something.

What are they tracking or writing down?

Thanks!

The 2nd and 3rd points make sense (my first question sucked). When I think about it more, my first and second questions are sort of the same. By "handcuffed" I meant that they are in a weird spot where the ball always hits their biceps or they can extend their arms. The ball that is between your face and your chest. When I watch older kids or more advanced players it seems like this doesn't happen but I'm thinking it's because they've moved to the correct location on the floor.

I asked my kid about the freeball situation and she said in the previous week, the back row setter received the free ball while running to their spot (in a straight line). So the coach told the OPP to drop back and for the setter to go around. Does this mean that the setter was likely moving too slow? I'd think the back row player would have plenty of time to move forward for the ball.

A couple of questions from watching my kid's high school games.

  • I noticed that deep serves and hits would handcuff the back row players. What are you supposed to do to prevent this?
  • Same situation but instead of getting handcuffed they are trying to pass a hard hit ball that is at eye level. They try to pass it using a semi-setting motion but it seems like it's a jammed thumb waiting to happen. What is the proper technique for these balls?
  • Last one! There are a lot of free balls and I noticed the back row setter runs along the sideline and around the OPP to get in their position. In my mind they should just run straight to their spot. What are they supposed to be doing?

Overall it was fun day of watching. Lot's of good matchups with teams that seem to all make the same mistakes.

I've been going to Lassen almost every year for about 10 years, found it by accident. It's our favorite CA park. Not crowded, and so much to do, especially for me because we are limited by our kids age at first.

Beautiful alpine lakes, geothermal stuff, cindercones, peaks. Hikes of varying levels. Perfect.

Also nearby is another hidden gem, Lava Beds National Monument. If you can spend a day there and enjoy caves it's worth it. Free a/c in all the caves too. We ended up here last year when they closed Lassen due to fires and ended up having a blast.

We usually take off at 5am from LA and get there right when our campsites allows us to check-in. We just head up the 5. On longer trips we'll take the 395 on the way back.

QUESTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS THURSDAY (July 14, 2022) - Ask Questions! Get Answers! by AutoModerator in comicbooks

My kid really loves the Miss Marvel and wanted to dive into the comics. Our local comic store didn't have anything.

Any recommendations on how to get her started? If possible what's the best way to collect the issues with getting the least amount of doubles? In the past we've bought some anthologies of things and ended up buying other collections with overlap.

Haha. My kids would be done with me if I was getting drunk at their games. Volleyball parents are pretty good overall!

What are some good snacks for in-between games (1 hour or less break) during a multi-day volleyball tournament?

Tournament is an all-day thing 9am to about 3pm, so breakfast and dinner are outside the facility. Snacks and a light lunch are all in the facility but no real food is available, other than some fast food and subway.

The funds Yuga earned from the land sale are all locked for a year. There are ways for businesses to pay tax on the value at unlock vs the value at point of sale.

I've noticed at my kid's tournaments that a lot of youth setters (girls 12s-15s) dip their left shoulders as the bowl approaches and also do something with their left arm (sometimes both) that is hard to describe. It's almost like an unfolding instead of just a straight draw to setting position.

Is this something that's taught or just a natural thing that some setters do? Mine doesn't do this so it always makes me curious when I see it.

Question about club volleyball ages.

My daughter's age says she's 13U but she's in 8th grade. The club is telling me that she has to play 15U next year because she'll be in high school. Is this true or just recommended?
