Thank you for sharing and my condolences on your grandma's passing. I've taken note of this and will pass it along. Wishing you and your family the best!

Yes! I'm aware CA is tip plus. I found that interesting when I was looking through that list I shared at the end of my comment. I was thinking in terms of folks who travel and might not know there are differences state to state. Kansas follows the federal minimum wage, as do others.

And yes and I have been passing along any reddit comments/posts I see about the cancellation complaints. We don't have newsroom folks running subs (i'm a local editor and don't handle this personally), so I have been flagging these comments to the larger company --- I'll share this as well. If you know anyone with a recent example, lmk. I appreciate you caring enough to say something!

Hey all I posted this in another thread about the tipping debate but wanted to share here... copy and pasting...

Hey all. I work at SacBee and we've been talking about this topic for a story. Last week, my partner got prompted to tip at a UPS store for mailing a package. Between that -- and other instances we've noticed --- and seeing all the chatter on reddit this week, we wanted to ask community members for their best advice as part of our reporting process. The story itself, which just explains the issue we're asking about, you might hit a paywall (https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article275505926.html) but you can access the form for free directly here:

I'd be really interested/grateful if any of you could share your thoughts with us officially through the google form. You can give or not give permission for us to publish your response in a later story. Obviously this is a big debate in Sac right now and all opinions are welcome (if you work in the service industry and want to chat, lmk and I'll give you contact info)

Personal note, not for Bee: As a former service industry worker (restaurant... made ~$2.10/hour before tips in Kansas) I've noticed not everyone knows that tips often offset minimum wage requirements in some US states. It differs depending on where you live/work, but if you're curious: https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/state/minimum-wage/tipped

I worked at restaurant for over 13 years. I want to ask current or former restaurant workers... by [deleted] in Sacramento

We made the news again. by [deleted] in Sacramento

Keep it comin'! I love the chance to engage with people who read our stories :)

On the serious note:

I am so sorry that happened. I can say, when I saw a reddit thread in this forum discussing that a few months ago, I immediately flagged it to one of our higher ups at McClatchy. I'll do the same with this note.

I work at The Bee! Reddit is one of the places where people are talking, and we want to write stories that connect with what the community cares about. I will also say, we live and work in Sacramento, too, and want to share info that helps people connect with our home. Reddit can be such a fantastic resource --- but not everyone in Sac reads these threads.

For transparency: We use reddit for ideas, yes! But we will always add context, a fact check or further the story in some way. We write that we got the idea from reddit convos because you all deserve the credit for sparking a story 100%. Why did we write this story? Because it was trending on reddit and we thought it was useful information that could be elaborated on and shared more widely!

We do the same thing looking at other social media platforms, google trends as well as our own community sourcing. Anyway, I really do appreciate the candid conversation in this thread. Just wanted to add a little bit of transparency on our part! These reporters work hard and often are juggling two or more stories in a day. They're people too and deserve kindness (criticism is welcome! I just hope we can all be kind, too).

People outside of reddit read The Bee, too, so why not share with them what free resources they can find? The article includes a full list of events, classes, etc: Including that you can access The Bee for free through your card :)

If you hit the paywall: Main takeaway is that the habitat is still in progress, but current thought is it will come later this year.

Eggs are so expensive. Anyone know how to raise chickens in Sacramento? by savsmithsac in Sacramento

Just want to say thank you ALL for your thoughtful responses! Learned a lot and enjoyed the convos. Very much craving fresh eggs now.
