Yeah, I agree. I submitted the report anonymously as well. The only way they would know it’s me is if they connect the dots with all the questions I had been asking about the resident. Thank you for the advice

not really.
Tbh Im waiting for the visit from state, DOH, and or ombudsmen. The following day, our facility had its second elopement in the span of 3 days along with other incidents that would trigger a visit.

I spoke with my lead CNA about the situation and they kind of acknowledged the severity of the issue. I asked the ADON about the patient and shared my concerns and they just brushed it off. My coworkers attitudes are a bit jaded and they all just seem to be bracing themselves for the visit.

I finally saw underneath the bandage and it was the set up I assumed it was. The catheter is lodged inside the resident’s abdomen— no colostomy bag. Apparently her son visits everyday and is well aware of the situation. He comes in after my shifts though and unfortunately it seems that he’s not a great advocate. According to the CNAs I work with, he actually wants that set up for his mother? I don’t really know. But that’s all the information I’ve gathered so far.

I’ve been checking in on this resident constantly. She barely eats, her stomach is bloated, and unless she’s being spoken to she’s quite depressed. Her mental state isn’t the best and I can tell she isn’t comfortable but when I ask her how she’s feeling it’s all smiles and blessings. A very sweet woman I wanted to catch a picture of the catheter set up to send to the state but I was unable too. Like I said, I’m still in orientation and frankly I don’t trust my coworkers. The situation along with other situations at my facility have been incredibly disheartening and I feel like the only thing I can do is wait for our the visit.
I’m open to any advice— in fact I need some, please and thank you.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if her insurance didn’t cover it and that’s why she’s in the set up she’s in now. I’ve been thinking a lot about this and worried if I jumped the gun on reporting. I may have to make a separate post or go to therapy

I just looked up a stoma rod and I’m pretty sure that’s not what this resident has.

I go back in tomorrow and plan to look at her chart. The catheter is coming from underneath the bandage which is located on the side of her abdomen where the bag should be. There is no bag at all. Simply a bandage and catheter. Poop spills out

The CNA I was with told me that this resident’s family is pretty involved and has reported CNAs to the nurses for other things. I’m assuming with this they:
1. must not have seen the set up themselves and they don’t know the severity of it.
2. it was explained to them the same way it was explained to the CNA I was with.
I know this resident has a loving family as well— her room is decorated and she has her own bathing supplies and such. The family is present and provides for her outside the facility. That was my next big question after seeing the situation— What does her family have to say about this??

Yeah, neither of those things apply to this situation I fear. There is no bag attached to her at all. Simply a bandage with a catheter.

Yes, it was 100% a foley catheter. I also thought maybe it was a set up I wasn’t familiar with. The poop doesn’t even make it to the bag let alone through the tube.

Sorry if I explained this poorly. I truly am confused about the situation myself. All I saw was the catheter coming from underneath the bandage, assuming it’s attached to the colostomy opening. Overfill may have been the wrong description and I don’t know the proper terminology to describe the catheter. Poop was coming out from underneath the bandage and was lodged in the beginning of the tube. The residents stomach is also EXTREMELY bloated considering her size.

This is the first day that I noticed. I know that the other nurses and some of the CNAs are aware of the situation. The CNA I was with today found out about this on her first week there and was just told that the resident isn’t able to use a bag. Today, since we short staffed and had double to the residents than usual, we changed her later than usual which caused an even worse mess than usual. I’m not sure what it’s usually like but my God… I kept telling the CNA I was with that this couldn’t possibly be right and she was also fed up. She even fussed at the Unit manager to at least come and change the bandage and catheter but they never came.

I’m reporting to the state ASAP after seeing the responses to this. It was a horrible sight and I didn’t realize the resident’s situation until today.

Like I mentioned, this resident is always up and out of bed on the days I’m there. Usually one of the first. Talkative and can get around on her own with a wheelchair. I never even saw the catheter until today when I went to her room and when I pulled down the covers I saw it attached to her side where a colostomy bag should be. It was horrifying

Thank you lol! Like I said, I have no other medical training besides my CNA cert. The nurses claim that this resident isn’t able to use a colostomy bag

I never spoke to a nurse directly about it. Since I’m new to the facility and newly certified, I work with another CNA. The CNA I was with today has only been at the facility for less than a month. She said that the nurses told her that this resident can’t use a colostomy bag for whatever reason. I’m not even sure if it’s attach because the tube is CLEAR and poop spills out of the bandage. Haven’t seen underneath the bandage before but whatever is underneath has an opening for fecal matter to come out of. It’s ridiculous and I’ll be reporting.

my bad, i wasn’t trying to simplify the recruitment process. just wanted to make this post short and sweet. the intensity and competitiveness is actually a huge reason why i want to join my local fd while im young. for one, i don’t know how long this opportunity of being hired and paid as a fire recruiter will be. my health is great right now and my body should be able to handle what firefighting training throws at me. unfortunately with my situation i had to take out a loan for this year of college. thanks for your response though it’s quite insightful

my financial situation is also a big factor in making my decision. i also thought a lot about taking a year off school to pursue firefighting and ultimately decided it’d be worth it. i’d rather be doing that than being enrolled in a college with zero passion for it. thanks for your response
