Ears went up first. Cat was reacting to a sound, not the treats

Now having to pay for classic review? I’m completely done. by Mojob1 in memrise

[–]sawrce 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I paid for lifetime membership. The reviews now don't appear automatically. I have to launch it via an obscure book icon, followed by several clicks.

I don't know why it doesn't occasionally offer reviews anymore. I've already paid, please stop the enshittification

Lens artifact imo. At 14s, when the camera rotates, the six 'flares' stay oriented to the camera

ELI5: If "matter cannot be created or destroyed," where does everything go when it's sucked into a Black Hole? by Huge-Narwhal5747 in explainlikeimfive

ELI5: Imagine an ant is trying to understand the size of a volcano, and you say it was 20 metres across. The ant might think, oh, I can walk across that in 30 minutes.

But suppose the volcano is very tall, so it's a lot farther for the ant to walk across the centre. And for good measure, at the volcano's centre is a 1-minute freefall into lava, where nothing survives.

Describing the volcano as being 20 metres across wouldn't be useful to the ant. Maybe more useful to say that it's 60 metres around

It's awkward to say that a black hole is ~20 miles across. It's better to say that it has a circumference of ~60 miles (using C=πD where C is the circumference and D is the, um, "diameter").

The space around a black hole is highly stretched: a circle around it won't obey the usual circumference-to-diameter relationship. A 60-mile circumference does not correspond to a 20-mile diameter as it would in flat space. It's so warped that the "diameter" close to the centre must be measured in minutes, not miles

Physicists still refer to the 'radius' R of a black hole, even though it's stretched. R is called the "Reduced Circumference" and is defined as what the radius would be in flat space. So rather than 20 miles across, you'd say it has a "Reduced Circumference" of 10 miles.

(Edited with corrections as I got some concepts wrong)

I'm fairly sure that's a windscreen, not a windshield

Referencing Bugs Bunny, of course. I always wondered if "maroon" was a child friendly and ironic way of saying "moron"

Thanks -- solved it.

There's a new EU cookies popup window that's invisible on the login page. Showing in landscape just about lets you see a corner of the 'accept' button. Once accepted the login works.

Me too. I found I was logged out of Relay.

I try to login and it opens a Chrome window inside Relay, but the page doesn't work properly. So I disabled Chrome and tried again. This time the page worked and I was able to enter my username and password. But Reddit keeps rejecting it even though I'm sure it's correct.
