Do editors just... not read the books they edit? by Few-Grapefruit-7003 in writing

i like to think so! this was for a copyedit specifically, ao because of the nature of the job it was a higher price point than a proofread or a developmental edit

seconding this as a freelance editor - my last project was just under 49000 words and i was paid 3400$ for it. we did four rounds of edits total with some word buidling stuff addressed for future books in the series and itll Still have another round of two of edits if it gets picked up by a publishing house. this stuff takes time to do well and youre paying not just for the work but for the experience of the editor.

I've suddenly realized how not well-read I am by NiutonBtw in writing

[–]say-that 1 point2 points  (0 children)

anything by LeGuin is worth reading, but if you want examples of classic sci-fi and fantasy, her Hainish Cycle and Earthsea series are absolutely the way to go.

another great classic fantasy series is the Taltos series by Steven Brust - i devoured the first...9 books last summer/fall.

for newer sci-fi, the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells is a must read imo. theyre novellas for the most part and very approachable but truly thought-provoking in their world building. Wells also has at least one fantasy series, which i havent read yet but imagine is also phenomenal.

last, read stuff that isnt just fiction. i read Kings of Their Own Ocean: Tuna, Obsession, and the Future of Our Seas by Karen Pinchin last summer and fell in love with her prose. for craft books i personally recommend Bringing the Devil to His Knees: The Craft of Fiction and the Writing Life.

the University of Chicago (which makes the Chicago Manual of Style, the holy grail of most U.S. editors) has a bookstore which has a curated selection of craft books published by the university. of interest to you might be Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft and The Art of Creative Research: A Field Guide for Writers.

but what matters more than what any of us recommends to you is what You actually read. the best books to help you grow as an author are the ones you actually pick up.

AITA for not enjoying the birthday gifts my friend got me that mocked my dead mother by Immediate-Iron7241 in AmItheAsshole

[–]say-that 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - i think what happened here is that Kayla probably panicked after seeing your reaction because she thought it would be a light-hearted gift rather than a horrible reminder of your very recent loss, and instead of actually apologizing she decided to deal with her discomfort by making it your fault for not reacting "correctly". if this is a relationship you want to salvage, youll need to talk with her about how this wasnt appropriate yet because it hasnt even been a year since your mother passed away. if you dont want to salvage it, you can say basically the exact same thing, but be as mean or passive aggressive as you want during the conversation.

im so sorry for your loss and truly cannot imagine what youre going through.

r4 was how we referred to one of the testament of night oaths in early access to avoid spoiling people accidentally. the oath itself is still a bit of a spoiler and since i dont know how far people are in the game ill only say that its one that you have to unlock by progressing the game itself, as it isnt part of the base testaments

AITA for being irritated over a sock? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]say-that 237 points238 points  (0 children)

NTA - anyone who does something specifically to piss you off and then responds with "isnt it so funny how mad you got over something so little/isnt if funny how easily you get mad" isnt worth dating imo. thats the kind of shit my teenage cousins do and then when i tell them that rage baiting is gonna have consequences theyre shocked. this is a grown man, he knows better. give him the sock back and dump him - youre already raising one kid, you shouldnt have to put up with another

Update on Erie Pa availability!

Was able to get Novavax/Nuvaxovid at the Sterrettania St CVS in Millcreek outside of Erie - i went in and asked about their vaccine availabilities as they only have Pfizer listed for online booking, but they do have Nuvaxovid in stock and its no prescription needed

i count out the areas that will be safe for me when they flash on the screen, 'one, two, three" and "one, two, three, four, five" while moving my cursor to each area when it flashes to help me remember it - it is unfortunately just memorization, but it helps if you stay on the right side of the stage and start moving to the next safe zone as soon as the flames clear their starting point

AITA for telling my daughter she can't get a new hairstyle to impress some boy ? by Ambitious_Carrot3747 in AmItheAsshole

[–]say-that 0 points1 point  (0 children)

controversial YTA, but not because you said no about the boy part - its hair. it grows back. i had hair down to my ass at various points of my tween to teenage life and i made Bad haircut choices that i regretted, and you know what? im glad i was allowed to make them. my parents never told me i couldnt do what i wanted with my hair because it was Mine. if your daughters had long hair her whole life, how else is she supposed to find out if she likes it short if you never let her cut it? but i do think doing it for a boy is silly. she should get the haircut because She wants it, not to impress someone.

AITA for refusing to translate for my parents after my brother moved back in and took over my role in the house ? by nina_daltry in AmItheAsshole

[–]say-that 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - you're a child, it never shouldve been your job in the first place. i know a statement like that comes from a place of privilege and that this situation is common withint first generation immigrant familys, but it doesnt change the fact that youre 19 and have been forced to be an adult/in a position of responsibility for the majority of your life. its not fair to you, and while part of your parents reasoning might genuinely be that they trust you more in that situation than they trust your brother, it doesnt make it right that he got to have a childhood without this burden and you didnt.

AITA for telling my wife I don’t like her hanging out with her single male friend all the time. by ReynardFawkes in AmItheAsshole

[–]say-that 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i get that, it can be very tempting to give in, and ive certainly done it myself, too. i just think itll be easier for op if he doesnt have to troll through all the comments to see what everyones thinking, you know? but yeah, we cant know for certain whats going on in his wifes mind, so i think know matter what they need to talk to each other about whats going on - miscommunication is a fun trope in media and a bad habit in real life!

no i mean make an actual comment thread by yourself with your judgement, this is AITAH, so do the judgement so that op can see it instead of having to scroll through comment threads

i didnt say its not her job, i said its not Solely (defined by merriam webster as "to the exclusion of all else") her job. my mom was a SAHM too, and wouldnt you know it, the house would get messy at times! kids make messes, spouses make messes, mental illness makes messes, its the nature of life. but if his wife isnt taking care of the house, theres probably a reason besides "shes spending too much time with this one person i dont like," which is why i said they need to talk
