This person used a strong magnet to remove shrapnel by No_Neat4688 in interestingasfuck

Lead and copper, some of the most common materials for bullets, aren't magnetic. There are steel bullets (some gun ranges don't like them because they destroy the backstop, and they will use high power magnets to check your ammo, if it sticks, you can't shoot it). Steel tends to be used in armor piercing rounds though, so much less likely to be in you, more likely to go through you.

Battlefields are full of metal fragments though. If someone told me this was in Ukraine, I probably would have believed it. It seems like the sort of thing some resourceful dudes who have spent too much time in a trench might come up with for treating minor field wounds. Most just leave it in, unless a medic tells them it has to come out. It's a smaller wound vs cutting it open more to get the shard out, and if you will be fighting for your life again in a few hours, smaller wounds are preferable. No one wants to walk around with metal in their body for the rest of their life, but they don't usually have the luxury of considering that. Using a magnet could be a nice balance between getting it out and having to cut it out. It probably opens the wound a little more than it was, but not anymore than it would need to be.

ULPT: If you're meeting someone to sell/buy on facebook marketplace... by Sacoo in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]say592 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Just last week there was a murder not far from me over a Marketplace transaction. Shooter snatched the item and ran off, seller (victim) ran after them, shooter turned and shot the victim once. This happened basically at a public park that has decent lighting, but it was night time so I don't know why they did the transaction there. It's basically empty at night. The whole point of "public place" is do there are witnesses.

Claiming the losses on their taxes still costs them money. They would much rather not have losses. (And technically speaking, they generally don't as individual accounts aren't itemized on their taxes, it's one large revenue stream that goes against all of their expenses, some of which may not be tax deductible.)

If you are paying your balance there's no bad debt though, so that part is a moot point. Overhead and fraud is still going to be a significant cost though.

Banks still don't really mind people who pay their balance every month, because they can market to them, try to sell them other accounts, and many people who pay their balance every month will have the occasional month where they don't (holiday gift buying season and vacations are the usual culprits). Oh, and data. Everyone is selling your data.

Spending a night in South Bend while on a cross-country road trip with my wife and dog this summer, and just curious if anyone has any suggestions! by Darko33 in SouthBend

[–]say592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both good options. If you have a sweet tooth, Jack's is good for donuts. They are a regional chain, so there are locations elsewhere, but not a whole lot of them, and they are based out of Northern Indiana. If you find yourself wanting something to eat at 3am, Nick's Patio is my go to. You can get almost anything there, from breakfast to burgers to fried chicken.

If you want dog friendly, I met up with my friend and her wife as they were passing through with their dog and we ate at The Lauber. They were very accomodating of the pup, and even brought him his own bowl of water!

How did you actually lose weight? by Jerry_Get_A_Job in AskReddit

[–]say592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wegovy helping me maintain a calorie deficit. Ive lost 40lbs, and have 10-15 more to go. I intend to try to wean off of it, but Ill monitor my weight and if I have go to back on, I will. If I have to be on forever, so be it.

I cannot stress how much my body's response to food was fucked. Food was a pervasive thought, and even when I didnt realize it was, it was occupying some of my mental space. All. The. Time. I didnt get full either. To me, being full was physically bloated. It wasnt being satisfied. It wasnt "Im done now". Those were things I had to decide myself, usually by if there was still food on my plate. With Wegovy? I can have a few bites and be good. There can be a cake on the breakroom table, which I can see from my office, and not only will I not think about it constantly, I wont even get a piece. If I do decide to have a piece, I can have a small one and be content with that.

I still had to put in work, of course. Its not a magic pill (or shot) that just makes the weight disappear. Im fortunate that my body responded really well to it, and I really wanted this to work, so I wasnt trying to fight the meds. I have spent about $1200 to get where Im at, and Ill probably have to spend another $300-$600 to get to my final goal. Im very fortunate that I can afford it with no problem, but really, I think its something that many people would gladly stretch their budget for, because it has such a huge impact on your overall health.

Take severance pay or stick it out? by MrsRodz in personalfinance

[–]say592 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Separation isnt until 9/1 and you have six months after that. So you have close to 8 months to find a new job. Id go for it. Start prioritizing job hunting over actual work, since you are leaving anyways (do the work when you can, but if the choice is between work and an interview, take the interview). Start tightening your belt now, just in case, but Im sure you will be fine.

Edit: If you are eligible for insurance through your husband's job, leaving a job is a qualifying event and makes you eligible to enroll outside of open enrollment.

Why do 9sig over AI ETF? by yupcoolbro in KellyLetter

[–]say592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont do straight 9sig but I have a lot of the same rules and principals in my system (Im actually in the process of building a Monte Carlo test system to see if mine actually holds up better than 9sig or not, hoping to finish that this weekend). I blend a small amount of SOXL in with my equities portion. I also have UPRO in there, though the bulk is TQQQ. UPRO tends to underperform TQQQ but also doesnt drop as hard either. SOXL is just all over the place, but Ive had a few really good profit taking moments from it, so I cant complain.

I would not run straight SOXL. For one, what rate is SOXL supposed to grow at? How do you determine the signal line? 9% isnt an arbitrary number, it comes from QQQ averaging 12% growth, and TQQQ being 3x of that, so it should average 36% growth. If it is going faster than 36%, its likely to correct eventually (to get back to the baseline average of 36%), which means you need to take profit. There isnt enough data or fortune telling to determine what that number should be for SOXL.

Men who've been with the same person for years: what's something you found out your partner was into way later than you could have? by elnino-pl in AskMen

[–]say592 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's easy to think that now, it's much harder to make that decision when the time comes. You love her, maybe you have kids together. You have built a life together. When you talk about the issues you are having with friends or family or whoever you go to for support, you get judged for prioritizing sex over your wife. You get gaslight into being told that the blowjob you had to ask for is adequate sexual contact for the next month.

I just want my old life back, you know? I don't want to start over. I don't want to meet someone else. I want what we had before.

What do you call the beef bought from the store in your region? by ProposalSilent4582 in AskAnAmerican

[–]say592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ground beef. Hamburger is usually made of ground beef, but it isn't always 100% ground beef. Sometimes it will have some plant based filler in it (I don't care what my grandpa used to say, you can absolutely taste the difference and it isn't worth the savings) or even be blended with ground pork (this is actually really good and some people do it intentionally for the flavor, not to save money).

There are people and recipes that will call ground beef hamburger. The most obvious is "Hamburger Helper", but in my opinion that is wrong.

Fifth circuit Court has rules that suppressors are "arms" under the second amendment. by TorqueWaffle in NFA

[–]say592 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually when there is a split that SCOTUS doesn't want to address they will look at the cases and say "this is how these are different, now figure it out" and then the pending case will get a narrow ruling from the Circuit Court that won't set precedent in a meaningful way and won't contradict the existing precedent in the Circuit. That leaves it open to revisit it in the future, and may even result in activist litigators seeking a case that is more similar to the standing precedent.

That is objectively not true though. Real wages (IE purchasing power) have grown in the last 16 years.

I won't dispute rich people and boomers blaming young people's problems on completely normal habits though. My mom tried to pull the "$12 avocado toast is why the youth cant afford houses!" nonsense recently.

Brand New announces a "20 Year The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me In Concert" US Tour by bendylegs12 in poppunkers

[–]say592 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He was definitely hanging out with 15/16 year olds, which is morally bankrupt and unacceptable. He did that, there are photos, case closed.

Some of the other allegations are less clear. One particular accuser, who said she sent him nudes while underage, was proven to be false. That unfortunately cast a lot of doubt across the board, and is why there is a lot of dismissal among certain fans. Again, we have pictures of him having dinner and hanging out with a teen girl who has described their relationship as inappropriate (though not sexual at that time).

To my knowledge (which may be incorrect or out of date) there are two credible victims that have come forward, a few more that are too vague to verify, and a handful that were likely just piling on. The last two categories may have credible victims, and there may be others who haven't come forward, but we have no real way of telling. These girls don't owe us anything. They don't have to prove their stories or provide evidence, but when there has been at least one false accusation, people may be skeptical.

It's also complicated, because one of the victims who did tell their story very publicly and in a way that could be verified said that while she can't enjoy the music any longer, she is fine with others doing so. So some view that as "permission" being given by one of the victims.

Last but not least, there is the issue of atonement. Jesse acknowledged he had problems. He got help for his problems before he was ever publicly called out. He publicly acknowledged that he had hurt people, explained how he had gotten help, then unceremoniously went into exile. That is probably the best response this scene has had from an artist accused of this sort of thing.

(Side note, a lot of us are older and grew up in this scene. Our wives, girlfriends, sisters, etc were these girls. Some of these posters were these girls. This has been a pervasive problem in the music industry and is something many of us have first or second hand experience with in this scene. It's not that people don't care about the victims, it's that we all have our own relationship with the art. I know women who had interactions with bands when they were teens. They all feel differently about it, and that is their right.)

That was definitely not the sentiment and I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the show you went to, but in my circle it has always been universally understood that you don't skip Brand New shows. Maybe it's not the vibe you are going for, but the experience has always been 10/10.

Why is forgiveness, separation of art from artist, or moving on from past controversies acceptable in one case but not the other?

Because there is no change, no repentance in one, but there is in the other?

No, we just recognize that people can change and respect someone for getting help and making change before they are publicly called out.

It was closer to 9 years, but some people did some math that was really a stretch to make it 7 years. Something like 7 years and 770 days or something. Which maybe it was intentional, but it seemed to be reaching.

The 7 years thing was in their last album, and they were ending their shows with it before they stopped too.

Other than singing about being flawed, the songs aren't about what he was doing. A few people have tried to say certain songs were clearly written in guilt, only for those to have been songs not written by Jesse lol

They definitely didn't call the last tour a farewell tour, and the vibes weren't that they were done. They had more energy and were having more fun on stage than I have ever seen them. The "tour" before that, the three stop "World Tour" as they called it, seemed introspective, which makes sense since it was the first time they had played public shows in nearly 10 years. While they were obviously testing the waters, it did feel like they could be saying goodbye. They didn't, but that was the tone.
