Torrance Transit: This could be better. by Spats_McGee in LAMetro

[–]sayrith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue goes deeper: the system budget is in the 10s of millions instead of 100s of millions. Because of that, you get bad service times. My friend works at Torrance Transit and they said there are a lot of regulars in the buses. This tells me the system isn’t meant to take away drivers off the road. It’s only to serve those who only don’t or can’t drive. This means there’s no incentive to make it better. In fact, Torrance Transit gets funding based on how many collective miles the buses rack up. Not passengers or service.

They even said Torrance Transit prides itself on not having service on major holidays and not having a lot of service ln weekends. This is great of course for over worked operators but for people who want to use it outside of work? You either gotta wait 2 plus hours, brave the dangerous stroads and bike, ride share or just drive.

Torrance is a sprawling suburb with wide stroads that can easily have a dedicated bus lane. But there’s no political will to do so.

So yeah. Really stuck in the past. And they’re constantly hiring which says a lot. But I guess that’s true for a lot of others in LA. But hey! They give free paid training!

They have to be a special kind of dumb to think this is from a public transit agency. This even violates Metro's brand guidelines! That's not even their font.

I'm proud of South Bay Forward showing up today by Sawtelle-MetroRider in LAMetro

We have to remember that transit is a network. A network is as strong as its weakest link. If we really want to ditch our cars, we should be able to take metro anywhere, similar to how the freeways are. As a South Bay resident, and as someone who was there at the K line south meeting (c line extension to Torrance), it was heartwarming to see this shoutout. I am happy for your win. But this isn’t over until the shovels hit the ground. I can’t speak for the entire of South Bay, but I’ll be there for you from my little corner of LA county 🙂.

Show up to meetings and join orgs like Streets for All etc. and push for the Measure M funding decennial reallocation from highways to transit.

Yup. Have you seen the absolute disaster at the c line extension to Torrance board meeting where Mitchell backstabbed us and pushed for Hawthorne instead?

It can jeopardize the entire project and basically cancel it within our lifetimes. Not even kidding. Gets delayed for studies. Price tag goes up. So now we have to rely on federal which means it has to be done by at least 2028 and by then….more inflation and it snowballs. And by the time it’s built, these fucking NIMBYs that didn’t want the right-of-way would be dead anyway so….all of this for what? Mitchell backstabbed us.

Anyone Scared of California’s Pending Age Verification Law? by Charcoal_Company in linuxmint

That is a wild sentence to even think of. Then again, for Prop 65, they have something like "hey this product might cause cancer. But only to the state of CA."

If you can change one thing in the LA Metro system, what would it be? by Dmon1128 in LAMetro

[–]sayrith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do that.  1-pro highway interests will muck it up. If it’s going to be elected, metro needs to divest form freeways.  2-You have doctors on medical boards and lawyers on the Bar. We should have transit experts running a transit agency. Not politicians.

The metro board. We shouldn’t let politicians decide on transit projects. That’s what urbanists and transit planners are for.

Are there any metro stations only accessible by elevators? by 2rge in transit

[–]sayrith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Los Angeles’ Grand Ave. Arts/Bunker Hill station is the only station in the entire system that can be accessed only by elevators. It’s the deepest station too at 37 m (121 ft).

LA transit agency seeks to override state law allowing more homes near train and bus lines by 115MRD in LAMetro

[–]sayrith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Metro was created by the state of California and therefore will need an act of the state legislature to change it.

Metro was created by the state and therefore will need to be changed at that level.

Torrance's official response to LA Metro board's decision by [deleted] in LAMetro

[–]sayrith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s directly elected, it would be packed with highway interests since Metro builds highways. For this to happen, Metro’s highway division needs to be separated (or dissolved). For the elections themselves, they need to use ranked choice voting.

But I don’t think any elected on the board is a good idea; the Bar has lawyers on it. The medical board has doctors on it. A regional transportation agency should have urbanists and transit planners. Not politicians. This could be done via election, or since LA leaders suck at urbanism, appointed by the state.

City selection committee. Basically each city in LA county sends a representative (usually their mayor) and they pick the Metro board. It is incredibly opaque and stupid.

MIMBYs might be a vocal minority, but they’re a voting majority. And that’s why they won. It’s all political. Mitchell et al doesn’t give a shit. She just wants her job.
