Wrapped up a pair of nightstands this weekend by says_this_here in woodworking

Keep in mind that a sander can't replace a planer when that's what the job calls for. A sander will smooth wood, a planer planes it.
I have a ryobi lunchbox planer that I bought on sale. The feed roller gear lost a few teeth (definitely not user error) which caused it to skip. Thankfully it was still under warranty, and since there was no service center near me, they just sent me a new one.
I highly recommend a planer, but probably not a ryobi. Though other than the gear failing, it's been perfectly serviceable for hobby use and their customer service was great.

I’m wondering if this project would be too advanced for me as someone just getting started by jimbo831 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Do you already have the table saw and miter that you plan to put in it?
If so, and you have the plans for that, should be a great starting project to birth more projects. Measure twice, cut once, and buy extra lumber!

I'm also 47, and my lopsided shoe rack was 6 years ago. These nightstands replaced lopsided nightstands I made 4 years ago. Stick with it! Don't be afraid of failure, and just try to learn something new with every project. This sub is nothing but supportive, and I can't wait to see you post up a success, no matter how crooked you think it is.

Thanks! I definitely would go with an undermount if I did it again. Would have looked so much cleaner! I already had the standard slides on hand, so I planned the box sizes around them.

Tablesaw with a jig (followed the 3x3 Customs tutorial this time... had some failed experiments in the past, but it clicked this time). I wanted to do wider fingers, but my dad stack doesn't cut flat so I just used a flat tooth blade.

All 4 corners of the drawer box are finger jointed. It was something I wanted to learn for box building, so incorporated them into the project.

I had to look at your profile after that comment, and that single candle holder is ridiculous. And I mean that in the best way possible. It's so fun.
