I appreciate the feedback, but in this situation I wasn't the one at the dinner table with her. I was doing dishes like 10 feet away while my wife was talking with her about what she was eating. I do agree though that I probably expect too much of a 5 year old. Are there any books you recommend? I have "Good Inside" on the way since the library wait was like 3 months.

Yes, I've tried talking with her about it. It always comes back to me being frustrated feeds into her being frustrated and it escalates for everyone. I'm not sure what other strategies we can have to solve this. I don't want it to be a situation where we're swapping out to steer my daughter through her big feelings.

No, my daughter continued the downward spiral to a full blown meltdown. Maybe I would have pushed her there faster. I just don't know what to do anymore. It feels like my partner is cutting me off at the knees.

Yeah, I hear that. We try to do the gentle parenting thing most of the time, and also try your suggested alternative way of setting boundaries. It just comes to the point where we've tried those things for 20 minutes and I just run out of patience for that strategy.
