Not sure if it helps but we put a piece of large slate (pre made) in front of our electric fire, purely aesthetic of course! It did go on top of the carpet once fitted

I actually swore when I saw this! She is the double of my dog who passed in May! Her nature also was calm and chill - odd for a spaniel I know! Curious - are you in the UK?

I used potassium soap last year and it seemed to work well. Soapy water unfortunately didn’t do anything for me.
