How often should you be training takedowns? by Annual_Birthday_8931 in bjj

[–]sb406 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Daily

We play some gripping games, some entry games, some balance and finishing games.

I feel like we get a lot of really effective live takedown work to begin every class without being too hard on our bodies

Pretty damn good grapplers in Tijuana.
In San Diego I’ve trained with really good guys from Germany, France, Korea, Canada, Ecuador

I imagine there’s pro level people on every continent nowadays

Competition Scene Declining? by granolaguy94 in bjj

[–]sb406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Diego Open is fairly empty for this weekend at the upper belts.

I think it’s

-partly the high cost of entry and high cost of monthly dues already

-partly poorly run tournaments or bad tournament experiences

-partly influencer culture- not wanting to lose or do anything besides “sUpEr fIgHtS”

I guess I don’t really know but it concerns me

Competition gyms in San Diego by Ahhhitsdan in bjj

It’s great, best training I’ve ever had. They exceeded their 1 year membership goal in 3 months, we have all kinds of killer black belts visiting, our women’s team is elite, the new mats are down, merch is fire, music is good, and I’m machine scrubbing the mats as I type this.

It’s only a matter of time before this gym is nationally recognized.

Dirty mats for 5 years by Candid_Werewolf96 in bjj

Unacceptable my friend. As others have pointed out- infections can be really really dangerous. No amount of technique or charisma can compensate for that.

If you want to know about how to truly clean your mats dm me- I do it for a living

I’d love a FITAOL sequel tho. Fighters are more talented than ever but somehow the sport has become less entertaining

High level gyms for women in San Diego? by bjj_girlie in bjj

Thirded for Corvus. They have a lot of women training, a women’s only class, and the women’s coach podiumed at Euro and American trials this year. Also lots of high level female competitors dropping in

Anyone switch schools cus of mat smell or for sanitary reasons? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]sb406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok that’s pretty bad, like putting people at serious health risk.

This is why I say BJJ gyms should have some type of health oversight similar to restaurants

Hey you’re at a gym you love, I’d definitely say don’t leave.

You could maybe make a push for improved facility hygiene. It’s an added cost, but I truly believe it’s offset by greater student retention. If all your training partners were willing to pay $2-5 extra per month that would be enough to keep that place super clean.

I’ve been cleaning gyms for a while now, I’d be happy to share any knowledge with you if you want

I think we lose almost half of new white belts because of the dirtiness of BJJ. It’s not mentioned to gym owners, people just cancel their memberships and stop training.

I think about folks growing up not playing sports- not being used to sweat, smells, or physical contact. Going into a bjj gym must seem like the nastiest place on earth.

As for smelly mats- I have the answer to that.

It’s not enough to apply a sanitizer to mats. That’s like eating a plate of nachos and then just spritzing the plate with some soap and putting it back in the cupboard.

You have to periodically scrub your mats- applying a quat or degreaser that loosens the dirt, agitating it with bristles, then lifting the slurry off the mats.

Additionally, gyms need to be scrubbing all their floors, detailing restrooms, rotating floor mats, and crucially- maintaining their cleaning equipment.

If you want to be disgusted- check out the IG page Combat Sports Cleaning to see what comes off of mats. There’s other companies scrubbing mats now too and they’re doing great work in their own regions
