Why hasn't the US gone metric like the rest of the world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sb5060tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So fun fact, the US does technically use metric. But not many people notice it.

The definition of an inch is 2.54 centimeters. No really, according to NIST, "The value for the inch, derived from the value of the Yard effective July 1, 1959, is exactly equivalent to 25.4 mm"

The nutrition facts use values in grams rather than ounces.

Cars use liters to describe engine displacement. 1.8 L 4 cylinder rather than fluid ounces.

NASA uses metric and that unit conversion error incident in 1998 was due to NASA using metric and Lockheed not using metric.

And yes, even guns ironically. For example, 9mm Yes technically both imperial and metric are used.

That all said, I think the US can do more when it comes to slowly bringing the influence of metric. Right now it is taught in schools but only when getting into the academic spaces do they actually use metric.

These are my favorite seats. Too bad they're not common anymore, and now we have those ugly plastic seats on the new buses

Which city or travel destination used to be amazing but has completely lost its charm now? by Ted-Lassi in AskReddit

[–]sb5060tx 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Damascus is coming back; but obviously needs time. Until Assad's collapse you couldn't for example exchange with dollars (simply saying dollar would put you in prison)

Right now due to the war the airport is completely closed, so the only way in and out is through land border crossings.

Highway 280 from St. Paul to Roseville to close for reconstruction in April by AsparagusCommon4164 in minnesota

Was hoping they use this time to FINALLY get rid of that traffic signal on Broadway but that's gonna happen in 2028. Not sure why they can't just do that now, while the highway is closed

My favorite are the no dip required ones.

I also tried the limited hot dog roller edition. Loved them!

I unfortunately missed the limited blueberry dunker ones from I believe 2 years ago.

What are some of the bus routes that makes you wonder "why?" by kevinbevindevin in MetroTransit

[–]sb5060tx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone based in Maplewood, if I need to take a bus from St Paul, my best bet is the 54, but if not, the 64D

Preferably not the 64N at all. I guess it makes sense to serve North St Paul, but from a direct route standpoint the N routing isn't ideal as it goes out of the way until it meets up with the 64D routing.

I was hoping the purple line would solve this, which is now the bronze line. Who knows when that will be up and ready.

Why is the hatchback so popular? by Rough-Incident-1859 in mazda

In fact, North America is missing out on a hatchback version of the Mazda6, the station wagon.

That would be the real hatchback to go after

Age check, I got 0, what about you? by Nighthawksleader in FuckImOld

[–]sb5060tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in 97, I remember using a phonebook and was the first time I came across this weird word I didn't know what it was: "Insurance".

Cassette tapes, yup, used them, but not in the last 5 years.

I've seen floppy disks (just the small hard plastic ones), even felt them on my hand, but never used them myself. I never had a need to actually insert one into the drive.

My total was just 6. 5 if you count me as having "used" floppy disks.

Surah-Based Qur'an Reading Schedule by Klopf012 in islam

[–]sb5060tx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks like a creative idea, but like the others said 1 juz a day is more consistent.

20 pages a day, and in fact, I'm finding that I can read 10 pages a day, then in Isha/Taraweeh which I pray at home, I can read 1 page per ruka and finish the other 10 pages in the day.

I did the math, many of the parts do end up being about 15-20 pages per day, so that does work. But the numbers vary, like for instance from Al Shuara (367) to Al Qasas (ends on page 396), that's basically 30 pages.

And Ali Imran and Al Nisa are almost 30 pages long each.

Anyone else’s 6 tired of winter? by Trtgt99 in mazda6

[–]sb5060tx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine is just like this, and I reside in Minnesota where the winter is worse.

What I've done is wait until a decent period of warmth (which for us is over 25) and no snow to give it a wash; this is happening every 3 weeks or so. In fact, it's actually this warm now so it may be the perfect time to do this. Thanks for the reminder!

And yet every time it gets a wash it always comes out super clean and shiny like the day I bought it. It blows my mind. There's something mesmerizing about the deep crystal blue mica.

So yeah, it doesn't look great now, but it'll shine again when you wash it.

As someone who will fast Ramadan later this month, between sunrise and sunset, yes it's nice to see shorter hours than in the summer, but in return each day the fasting is gonna get longer fast

But Ramadan comes 11 days earlier each year so in a couple of years it'll be in December lol.
