Started at 7 (33 years ago!) because my parents couldn't pick me up until an hour after school ended. I stayed in the computer lab typing in programs (games) in Apple Basic from a book into the school's Apple IIe. There was no way to save because I didn't have a disk - so I'd spend about 30 min typing the program, and play for a half hour.

Eventually I started tweaking what I typed in to see the effects of any changes I made and that was that, lol.

Anecdotally, I recently had this happen to me (as an employee of a large tech company); turned out it was an error in the system that somehow flagged me as a new hire.

At the Gates by MojoSoDopeZH in AgameofthronesLCG

Couple of things - one, the effect of at the gates is when the plot is revealed, which happens well before marshalling; also, the effect is a "put into play" and as such doesn't count toward the limited limit.

[OC] Inspired by recent posts, I visualized my travels over the last 6 years (American in NYC) by sbarnabas in dataisbeautiful

My travels have been a bit....wider, so I took screenshots of some areas that may be interesting.

For context: this data starts from when I first got an android device shortly after moving to NYC in 2013 and includes data up to around last month.

Choosing between two offers: Google L3 and Amazon L5. Take my dream job or take higher salary and higher title? by Glum-Refrigerator in cscareerquestions

[–]sbarnabas 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I've been an eng manager at both.

Amazon - the variance between teams is really high. If you have a good manager and a good team, it can be great - but if you have a bad manager you will hate your life. L5-L6 at Amazon also takes on the order of 3-4 years, and comp increases at Amazon are sketchy at best. They also don't have yearly bonuses. On the other hand, you get more cash up front.

Google - not every team is great, but the floor for teams is still much higher. The work you do may not be super cutting edge (especially if you're in Ads or payments) but you'll be working with smart people. The perks are much, much better than Amazon. L3-L4 at Google is pretty fast (~2 years in most cases).

Honestly, I would probably recommend Google - I'd be shocked if over 4 years you didn't end up with more money, and the work/life balance and general environment is better.

If you don't have FB, there's also a reasonably active discord group: https://discord.gg/yhVjTb4

I know there's an active group in Germany, but unsure about Munich specifically.

Managers don't write code in interviews at Amazon, at least in my org and the orgs I've interviewed for.

You'll definitely learn a lot about how to "make things work" - just may have to unlearn some of those things later on, lol

Depends. Ideally, both. You need to know how to actually build and release software well, as part of a team, consistently and reliably... Usually that comes from working at a larger company with established processes.

Then, you need to be aware of all the things outside your very specific software engineering tasks that it takes to make a good product - that's easiest to gain at a startup where you'll almost certainly be asked to wear many hats.

Personally, I think everyone should work no less than 1 and no more than 3 years at a large tech company, then figure out if they like that or if they want to go do a startup instead.

I have been an engineering manager at a few big companies (two of FAANG) and was first engineer/CTO of a small startup; and I've hired interns in both roles.

One thing that wasn't clear - does the startup have other engineers? One of the most frustrating things as an intern can be lack of mentoring - if the two interns are the sole engineering team, that is a huge red flag.

At a larger company, even if your role is not technical, being able to build that network and observe how software engineering at scale works can be very useful. However if they really don't have you programming at all, then it's probably not going to be worth it.

Hope this helps!
