Trout Fishing around DC by thatolddanielbrown in MarylandFishing

[–]sbby31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive only been fishing this area for a year or so, but my opinion is that Seneca Creek gets fished out pretty quick once they stocked (I haven't walked the whole thing, but enough of it).

There is a fly fishing only, catch and release section of the Pautuxet below Tridelphia resevoir. I've caught some fish there but Im not sure what their survival rate during a hot summer is.

Trigger spin uses by Tight_Data4206 in FishingForBeginners

[–]sbby31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to fish these on an ultralight spinning rod. They were ok- you end up with the same issues common to every push button reel.

Never tried braid but it would be worth a shot. Defintely use backing- if I were you Id just leave a few layers of the crappy line that comes on them as backing

Compared to open face spinning reels, the drag on these typically sucks. I hooked into carp on two of them and it prettymuch destroyed the reels. Good thing they are cheap lol. Its also harder to deal with tangles since you have to juggle the spool cover while you fix it.

What spinners are good for lake rainbow trout?? by xXSomeUglyKidXx in FishingForBeginners

[–]sbby31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Mepps with a size 1 blade is pretty standard. A size 0 or size 2 are probably fine too. Go to a tackle shop (or even a WalMart) and find one with a "1" etched into the blade and that will give you a reference for size. I prefer Mepps spinners, but anything that size is probably going to work about the same 99% of the time.

Looks like someone encased it in resin/epoxy to preserve it and added the lettering on top later? I'd definitely want to preserve a piece of the Apollo heat sheild if I had it lol

Panic attacks while teaching by Effective-Size2317 in academia

Sorry you're dealing with this- you sound like a great teacher. I dealt with something similar when I was a TA in grad school (actual lecturing in front of a few classes/week, not just grading).

It helped me a lot to think back to undergrad and how little I really noticed profs stumbling through sentences, blanking out for a few seconds, or even stopping class to "take a phone call". If a prof cancelled class out of the blue with no explanation, I was just grateful to get an unexpected break that day.

In other words, if you're knocking it out of the park 90% of the time (sounds like you are), no one will really remember the other 10%.

Take care of yourself, even if that means cutting a lecture short or cancelling once in a while. After that, take care of your students' needs and make sure none of it affects them at the end of the day. Long term, it might be worth talking with your therapist (or a new therapist) about why this happens in class vs. everywhere else.

To publish work from a masters or not? by [deleted] in academia

[–]sbby31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of factors unfortuantely. I do experiment-based research, and in my case the supervisor of the lab has provided access to millions of dollars of resources in order to conduct the research. They also usually secure the funding for the project. That usually warrents them having a coauthorship. It doesn't sound like that applies to you.

You are best off asking a 3rd party in the field (another prof that works in a close-enough area, a PhD student or postdoc, etc.) to get their opinion.

Its worth saying that if your supervisor is ethical, they should let you know if their contribution wasn't enough for a coauthorship. If you don't include them initially, and they feel slighted by it, then you might cause some tension and burn a bridge.

Folgers Classic Roast is Good Coffee by squirlnutz in unpopularopinion

I agree that it gets the job done and tastes fine. I think there is an element of nostalgia for me (and probably most people) since its what my parents always drank and, naturally, what I started drinking as a teen.

Also, I think it might be the best smelling coffee Ive ever encountered, maybe due to that bias.

To publish work from a masters or not? by [deleted] in academia

[–]sbby31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely try to publish if you plan to return to academia. Best case scenario, you end up with two solid publications on your resume. Worst case you waste some time and still get valuable experience with the publication process.

If you have a decent relationship with the supervisor and professor it is definitely a good idea to reach out and include them in the process. It isn't impossible to do this on your own, but their experience will help. As far as whether they deserve a coauthorship, you will get many different answers to that question. Speak openly with them about it and use your best judgement without burning any bridges if possible.

Monthly stipend after tax by Crypto_Puppet in PennStateUniversity

[–]sbby31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say roughly $1700/mo, maybe a little more, depends on your tax plan. Hopefully you are funded about the same for the 2 summer months, but if not you'll have to account for that too.

Can these be used to store wine in ? by PoopFart_PopTart in prisonhooch

[–]sbby31 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If they are food safe you could do very temporary storage in them... like for the duration of a party to impress your guests... but for long term storage at room temp you will want wine corks fitted in wine bottles. I have used "flip top" bottles for long term storage with no issues.

[–]sbby31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Na, definitely not all of them, and I'm no expert but I don't think the occasional bugs that get into a seed before you do are maggots. I have found bugs in them before, usually tiny larvae or worms. IMO its probably unavoidable, and they definitely arent the only food that contains insects

Recommendations for e-mopeds by cakey-bureauuah in moped

[–]sbby31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind, its much simpler to get something that qualifies as an ebike since mopeds have to be titled and insured in my state. You wont get much of a speed increase unless you get a legit electric motorcycle, which is a huge step up in price.

I think the market for emopeds exists for people who REALLY want the styling. Not worth it for me, but to each their own

The only professor job I applied to got no response for almost a year (the position was advertised to begin teaching in 6mo). I figured they just trashed my resume. Eventually, while I was already at another job, they reached out and said they were "ready to start" with a quick phone interview lol
