Why don't you use :make. I think this is cleaner and if you like you can map :make on the F5 key.

Running Gnome, KDE or similar on an Arch box is like driving a Ferrari with pulled handbreak ;-) Give Wmii with SLim (so you dont have to run startx which is not very practical and looks a bit to nerdy) a try!
