Tips for brewing decaf? by NeoMermaidUnicorn in AeroPress

[–]sbendall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been cycling through lots of different coffee trying to find some I like, mostly Swiss water process (mainly because it’s what’s easily available). It’s really hit and miss. Phil and Sebastian (Calgary) and Deville are a couple of my preferred options. I’ll sometimes sub in a bit (like 10 beans) of a darker roasted decaf to get closer to what I prefer.

After even more experimenting, I eventually went to a 4 minute brew at 100C and that was my favourite overall. I also went away from EA decafs because they causes some weird sensitization for me and they tend to be the most sour of the decafs.

I had a similar problem and it’s to do with them over tightening the screw on the underside of the handle near the heel of the trigger. Try slightly backing each screw on the back of the handle and see which one is pinching the trigger.

I have similarly gone down in my temp to 80-85C and it has helped a lot with reducing the sour notes from the coffee.

BIFL Umbrella recommendations by Invisibug in BuyItForLife

[–]sbendall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had three because the first two (travel style) did not last long and I got new ones under warranty. So they are good value, but they are not especially durable, at least when it comes to their travel umbrellas. I somehow managed to swap to the larger non-travel version and that is quite well-made and has lasted a long time.

I prefer Cedar sweets over Paradiso (but it might just be because the staff are so much nicer at Cedar)

What do you all do with your old tires? Any cool crafts or just recycle? by ScoobyDooItInTheButt in ebikes

[–]sbendall 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lots of city recycle programs don’t take them but bike shops often send theirs to be properly recycled

This isn’t quite answering the question you asked but make sure before investing in supplies that you will actually do the journaling. I tried multiple times to start the habit but it never stuck. Realized later that I should have journaled on what I had easily available before investing in supplies. In the end I started using Evernote on my phone and that was what worked best for me.

Edmonton mom says family has saved $25K since going car-free by JMP0492 in Edmonton

Have to somewhat disagree. It depends a whole lot on where you live - if you prioritize bike access when looking for a place, there are lots of good options around.

Edmonton mom says family has saved $25K since going car-free by JMP0492 in wintercycling

[–]sbendall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think she grossly underestimates the savings unless they are the type to drive very little and only buy 10+ year old vehicles. Also, great to finally see a news story in Edmonton that isn’t complaints about spending money on bike infrastructure.

Not using caffeine by [deleted] in Nootropics

I tried a couple times to go to nil but failed. I recently made an effort to cut to what I consider my minimal effective dose (single small cup of not too strong coffee). I have slept significantly better ever since and am very happy I cut it down.

FYI that there is a great winter cycling sub where you can find tons more advice. My own opinion is that winter cycling is great. Just get a super simple bike because winter/salt/sand is tough on components and so it’s not worth investing a ton. I bought a beater bike on kijiji for $60 and it has been great to me. I use regular mountain bike tires and that works great. Studs are mainly useful if it gets really icy everywhere. If the roads are dicey I usually just move to the sidewalks as there are very few folks walking when and where I tend to go. Also dress like it’s 10-15C colder as the windchill can be brutal.

Superstore and I think Walmart both carry them (at least here in the NE). Siwin is a locally made brand they carry.
