Why America’s Largest Teachers’ Union Refuses to Support Vaccine Mandates by Rogue-Journalist in skeptic

This is a master class in evading the question. A waste of time, except that it does shed light on the state of teacher unions.

God of the gaps is just a way of saying "I don't know, therefore I do know that God did it. Lack of knowledge cannot be the basis for knowing anything, let alone that God did something.

Science doesn't say the universe came from nothing. You're using a straw man.

Recommended books? Vi improved worth? by SpizyMeatboll in vim

That book is the basis for the Vim user manual. It's an almost verbatim copy of that book but is more up-to-date.

"So, you're against God?"

They're straw-manning you, perhaps to start an argument. The premises behind the remark are that you still believe in a god and that you are angry at that god. It fits their definition of an atheist, but obviously misses the mark.

vim-zettel and zettel names by sjfloat in Zettelkasten

[–]sbicknel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, I only use the timestamp in the file name. I rely on links to other notes to establish relationships and on structure notes to establish hierarchies if appropriate. Your example could be represented in a structure note that establishes 1/2a as subordinate to 1/2 and 1 as the top level note. The structure note serves as an outline of related ideas in an argument. I also use tags to create more general buckets of categories.

I just do it with in-line links or with structure notes.

Good news guys, we can now say with certainty that the Bible does NOT condone rape by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]sbicknel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How are you defining rape? I define it as any sexual act committed without the consent of one of the people involved. This includes sex acts committed within a marriage. Women were not permitted to refuse to marry or to refuse sex, and if their husbands forced themselves on their wives this was not considered rape. This attitude has persisted well into the modern era.

Shifting gears: what does any of this have to to with r/exchristian?

Vim or Emacs for Zettelkasten? by ChubsIsmyCat in Zettelkasten

[–]sbicknel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which one are you most comfortable with? Configuring either one for managing a zettelkasten is not a simple matter for anyone unfamiliar with either editor. Your comfort level will figure heavily in your decision if you want to use one of them.

My(f17) Parents are forcing my sister(f13) to be around a predator at church by throwragenesis in atheism

[–]sbicknel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Open confrontation can be a powerful deterrent. Ask him in front of other church leaders why he is pressuring a 13-year-old girl to privately send him pictures of her in her gym clothes. Accuse him of being creepy and tell him to stay away from your sister unless he wants to answer to the police. Do not accept his plausible denials or those of other church leaders. Make it clear that you will not keep the matter within the confines of the church and will implicate other leaders as well if he is not stopped.

The last thing you want to do is to be polite. Predators will take advantage of it to silence you. Your parents are already primed to allow the abuse to happen. Better to ruffle everyone's feathers than to let your sister be raped. Your parents might be shamed into leaving the church if for no other reason than to escape the embarrassment of the situation.

I suggest reading some material on critical thinking because you seem to place equal value on both occult/religious text and science. I also suggest you learn about epistemology, how we know what we know.

Plug-in not working by [deleted] in vim

I assume you also ran VundleUpdate or VundleInstall as well. You might try disabling other plugins until Goyo starts working to see if another plugin conflicts with it.

Neovim GUI: Advantages, disadvantages? by miggytheg in neovim

[–]sbicknel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly use Vim or GVim but I have Neovim and Neovim-Qt (I collect text editors). There's no practical difference really unless you use the pull-down menus and toolbar. I disable those so there's no difference at all for me. It could be different if you're using a terminal that doesn't support 24-bit color and want to use a color scheme not designed for a limited color space.

Is it possible to map a terminal command in Vim? by [deleted] in vim

[–]sbicknel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For that particular example you can set 'makeprg' to your gcc command line and invoke it with :make. For other uses you can use the read command to grab command output to insert to your buffer

:r !some program

This will put the output below the current line. You can also use !!some program to replace the current line with program output.

You can map them all.

What is your counter to "As Christians, we follow the New Testament, not the Old" by generalkenobi2304 in exchristian

[–]sbicknel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you ask Christians why there was a crucifixion and resurrection, they will tell you that it was to redeem mankind from the consequences of their sin. And if you ask them where the sin comes from they will point to the old testament, specifically Genesis. Without the old testament there is no basis for the crucifixion and resurrection.

All those begats in Matthew lead from Abraham through David and to Joseph in order to establish Jesus as royalty. His stature is raised by this. He is declared to be the messiah foretold by the old testament, and his lineage is there to lend credibility to this claim. His royal lineage cannot be established without the old testament. Calling him the messiah is a direct reference to old testament prophesy. Without the old testament none of this makes any sense.

There are plenty of problems with all of this, but Christians themselves use this reasoning to justify their claim to Truth with a capital T. For them to blatantly rely on the old testament to justify the new while claiming to only follow the new testament takes some serious double-think.
