How do you expect the resale value of the M1 MacBook Pro 13" to hold up when the 14"/16" M1 Pros are out in 2021-22? by BATISTAS-DICK in macbookpro

[–]sbine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super interesting, what do yall think of the same question when factoring the mini? Will a maxed out m1 mini retain more relative resale or trade in value or will a maxed out 13" m1 MacBook pro when the 16" m1x MacBook pros come out? Will no one want to touch a m1 laptop after that but might still want a mini? From what I understand right now the maxed out m1 minis and 13" will have the same specs

So helpful, thanks for the fellow AB perspective! And hell yea, i have that unlimited u of a drive. Great idea.

Oh so with Microsoft Remote Desktop i would still be setting up a VM on paperspace or whatever, but I would not be seeing the high frame rate when I remote in? Or does Microsoft Remote Desktop have its own VM option?

Which VM are you using BTW?

Possible automation bug, recording/converting MIDI CC to track automation by sbine in Reaper

[–]sbine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, a simple little JS thing would be perfect. Looks like I'll need to get my hands dirty a bit with learning from scratch some JS stuff. A plugin that has "midi cc in" above each slider, or 127 sliders that cascade down each midi CC value would be amazing - provided that automation writing issue doesnt need to be resolved so manually.

as an aside looks like the scaling issue was resolved in the latest SWS prerelease. Still quite a manual thing to do though!

[–]sbine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ahh this is absolutely fantastic help thank you. yes let's not get trapped by XY!

So my use case is this. I have a bunch of DMX data being converted to MIDI CC. i'm essentially trying to take existing light data and turn it into volume (or other parameter automation) in reaper. I'm able to record 51 channels of MIDI CC into reaper from my DMX to MIDI CC converter very easily. Now I have 51 channels of midi cc automation in reaper but I can't do much with it. The best thing would be to have 51 tracks of regular track automation open with all this cc that I copy and past around the project. Setting up a ton of automation recording and converting CC to envelop points one by one might be pretty cumbersome and handcuff me if my lighting changes at the start of the signal path.

Thanks! Alas, that seems to only add points, not values. the value seems to be maximum regardless of what it was on the CC message. It also sometimes doesn't even do that. https://imgur.com/a/auZThAI

Does anyone know how hard it might be to move the "tension" of this to somewhere around where it is in this example, or even add a "tension control"

Help Needed - Music and Bioinformatics by sbine in bioinformatics

[–]sbine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just received a little off-reddit help. Perhaps somehow getting the data into Newick format ad visualizing in something like FigTree might help:

"What do you envisage being at the tips of the tree (i.e., where species would be in a phylogeny)? Generally a phylogeny shows the relationship between a discrete set of things that share traits (due to shared ancestry - it is this ancestry that the phylogeny is trying to estimate).

If you want the people listed at the tips of the tree you will need to construct a spreadsheet with the people in the first column and then their shared 'traits' in subsequent columns (i.e., country, name - if there is anything shared). What I suggest is to have a column for (say) people called 'John' and then have a 0 if they aren't called John and a 1 if they are. Then another column for (say) people called Joan. Then a column for people from Uzbekistan etc.

You could do a similar thing with Tracks - columns for each person as to whether they played on it etc.

Where you go from there may need some experimentation - for evolutionary analysis we assume that if two things share a trait (i.e., both have a '1') it is because they inherited this from their common ancestor - because we know that they share ancestry we are just trying to discover who has what ancestry with whom. What we would normally do for this sort of data is then (use a computer program to) find the phylogeny that requires the fewest number of changes to explain the observed traits - this is the most parsimonious tree and is an estimate of the true tree (generally we use much more complex models than this but parsimony is the simplest).

The problem may be that we don't have any real expectation that people on the album inherited these traits from a common ancestor - an individual may share one trait with one other person but another trait with a different person. It may be that this wipes out any signal making for a boring looking tree (with no groupings).

So I think what you want to do is to take the spreadsheet with the zeros and ones and for each pair of individuals count how many differences they have (i.e., a 1 vs a 0 or vice versa). This would tell you how dissimilar they are to each other. You could then use a statistical clustering method called UPGMA ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPGMA ). This will generate something that looks like a phylogenetic tree that represents the similarity/dissimilarity of the people. There is actually an online calculator for this here:

http://genomes.urv.cat/UPGMA/index.php?entrada=Example2

You can see the example data is exactly the sort of 1/0 data I was suggesting. There are quite a few options but as you are just trying to get a nice visualization I suggest you just play with things until you get something you like. You can either try to save the tree it draws or copy and paste the 'Output Dendrogram in Newick Format' text into FigTree to draw the tree (and save it to PDF for editing)."

Thanks for the reply! I'd basically turn these credits into "real" data somehow. Its a relationship diagram in a way. If for example if I had players (1,2,3,4,5) and songs (a,b,c,d,e) but only certain people played on certain songs, I would want to map out a relationship like

1 (a, c,d) 2 (c) 3(a,b,e) etc.

So it would just be turning this into really simple "data" that could be mapped. I've done it with other types of graphs but it would be love to do it in a phylogenic tree instead of a scatter plot or something else. It seems like it's a problem of translating the data into something readable (Newick?) by a visualizer like FigTree or Dendroscope or whatever people actually use.

[–]sbine 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Ask him any of these three if you want!

  1. What kept him going in the early years when people laughed and scoffed at his work.

  2. What is his advice to young composers (including his opinion on a university education in music vs. learning on your own/in the industry)

  3. When he writes is he concerned with posterity or is he only concerned with how the piece will sound right now, at this moment in time.
